Yes its totally cheesy and unrealistic but that's all part of the fun, its a funny film. With some genuinely touching moments of pathos. The scene where Emma,Thompson I getting dressed after being given the Joni Mitchell CD gets me every single time. Love the "porn" stars, love Bill Nighy. Great film and I will be watching it this Christmas. So there!

Its a beautiful film, for so so so many of the stories.

itsatrap · 03/12/2015 01:01

Love it also, "just in cases" has made its way in to everyday exchanges between dh and I (don't tell him I told you!!) I also secretly pretend that Laura linney and Karl (who incidentally played xerxes in 300!) End up together, even though they really don't :-(

Fatmomma99 · 03/12/2015 01:04

I'm obviously an alien. I LOVE this kind of film, and LOVED 4 Weddings, but HATED LA. For reasons most of you seem to love it. I was OUTRAGED by the ending for Emma T's character. And to end the film with her life being shit without it being anything like her fault. Why would this a glorious film make? And HG being Tony Blair - who cares how Tony's love life ends out. Plus it's a naff film, which stole all its best jokes (like the translation scene) from 4 Weddings.

just why?

tiredvommachine · 03/12/2015 02:25

I'm dreading watching it again as can relate to Emma Thompsons character as of early last week and it's just so sad.

crabb · 03/12/2015 02:29

I'm so sorry vommachine. That's horrible Flowers

HelenaDove · 03/12/2015 02:40

It's cheesy as hell but great.

We also use 'ant or dec', 'Wandsworth, the dodgy end', just a in cases' and anything that is the same as something is 'table'

Also whenever Britney Spears is mentioned, we of course stick on a dodgy accent and say 'she was rubbish'.

BowiesJumper · 03/12/2015 06:34

Porn? There's no porn in it? Are you talking about martin freeman/joanna page? They're just movie stand ins who do some standing in on love scenes in feature films occasionally. Not porn films!

I also love the film although kk does bug the hell out of me. 'Oh I look quite pretty.' Fuck off.

londonrach · 03/12/2015 06:40

Love christmas movies full stop and this is top of the pile...

Twooter · 03/12/2015 06:43

Don'tbuyanewmum- I thought they were brother and sister?

confusedandemployed · 03/12/2015 06:49

I'm not a fan of chick flicks either, but too will make an exception for this one.

Loved that deleted scene. How on earth can you delete Frances DLT from anything??!

SeaMagic · 03/12/2015 06:50

You are all completely unreasonable.

It is a steaming pile of crap...

and misogynistic to boot

TheWernethWife · 03/12/2015 09:25

Love the film but hate Martine McCutcheon - who the hell did the casting, everyone else is perfect. Lovely Liam Neeson and Alan Rickman, lush

BlueBananas · 03/12/2015 09:28

I'm always surprised by the hatred of this film on MN
I love love love it
And thought it was pretty universally loved until I came on here, but then I don't understand most of the people who live in MN world

FireCrotch · 03/12/2015 09:37

Can I just say that they aren't porn stars. They're body doubles or stand ins. They use people of similar proportions to prepare the lighting and scenery. If you listen they talk about being in a hurry because they want to get the actual actors in.

I don't mind the film but hate Kiera Knightly's "I look quite pretty!" Line. Gah.

Sidge · 03/12/2015 09:40

I hate most of it.

I hate that Emma Thompson gets shafted by her slimy husband and his sleazy co-worker and yet puts on a brave face and stands by her man.

I hate the porn star stand in couple - so unnecessary and just a way to get some tits in the film.

I hate that Martine McCutcheon is the 'fat' tea girl but despite being 'fat and common' the PM falls in love with her. As if.

I hate the Keira Knightley/Andrew Lincoln story line. Some mate you are.

I hate the 'desperately in love 10 year old' or whatever he is.

I do like Bill Nighy's character and some lines are great. The romance between Colin Firth and the beautiful Portuguese girl is sweet.

Marzipanface · 03/12/2015 09:40

It's a dreadfully sexist film with ludicrous story lines. YABU.

FireCrotch · 03/12/2015 09:42

Sorry Bowie. Glad we're on the same page though. :o

Preciousxbane · 03/12/2015 09:44

If you carve up the stories then some are great, I bow to Emma Thompsons performance but some are steaming piles of shit.

toomuchinternets · 03/12/2015 09:48

We love it here, it's a firm favourite, no shame! AGREE they should have cut the rubbish bloke going to America to get laid scenes out, and left the heartbreaking but beautiful lesbian deleted scenes in.

Much of the vocabulary used in our family too: just in cases / Ant or Dec / eight is a lot of legs David / etc.

In fact, watched it on Dec 1st Grin

Really, really, really dislike the Andrew Lincoln holding up the cards scene. Me ten years ago LOVED it and thought it was ever so romantic. Almost 30, newly married me thinks he's a total knobjockey- loves his best mate's wife, and is a dickhead to her because he loves her, then manages to do a big romantic apology without actually apologising at all....

I love Martine McCutcheon in it, don't get the hate towards her at all! She was perfect.

MissBattleaxe · 03/12/2015 09:59

I love it but I hate myself for loving it because there are so many bad things about it.

Bad stuff
Martine McCutcheon's swearing "piss it" etc- who says that? who has EVER said that? It was crap.

YY to Keira Knightley's "I look quite pretty" and "is it my terrible taste in pie?" when she brings the pie to Egg of This Life. So cheesy and twee.

  1. General bum clenching tweeness and the feeling that the Englishness is being cranked up a notch or ten for the US market. (see also Bridget Jones gigantic gorgeous flat in central London on a publishing assistant salary)

Good stuff

YY to the deleted scene with Frances DLT and the sausages. Brilliant, succint and would have been great in the film.

Also- the cute scene with Julia Davis as the caterer when Khris Marshall says "these canapes looks like dead baby's fingers. Bet you're glad you didn't get this catering job!" and JD says "I did"

YY to Laura Linney- give her a job in anything and she will be perfect.

YY to Emma T underacting to superb effect. Overblown would have ruined it. She got that silent bed smoothing scene just right.

YY to everything Bill Nighy says and does- even the twitching.

YY to all the airport scenes- every time I blub. Every time.
