To wonder how a 'satirical' thread is deemed 'not in the spirit' of this site...

... and deleted toot suite, and to feel sad for the seeming decline of satire in general?

There is still a variety of satirical websites, publications and similar. But I feel not so much mainstream content ie regular popular tv programmes, aired at peak times. I also sense that satire is often misunderstood or that many people either don't ' get it' or refuse to get it. I long for an extra few tv and radio programmes dedicated to the satire of everyone and everything, from the great and the good to your everyday people.

Please someone reassure me that satire isn't dying or disappearing from the public consciousness? I think it plays an important role in politics, culture you name it.

Not quite a TAAT - more a personal concern that satire just seems to be slowly shrinking as a means of commentary in the UK.

I share your sadness OP

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 30/11/2015 13:05

What thread are you talking about?

TonySopranosVest · 30/11/2015 13:09

I am stunned that thread went. Fucking Hell.

hiddenhome2 · 30/11/2015 13:10

What was it about?

scaevola · 30/11/2015 13:10

There are many talented writers on MN, and satire (especially if on touchy subjects) needs to be exceptionally well written to avoid just being offensive. I've no idea which thread you're talking about, nor who started it, so it's impossible for me to tell whether it was indeed well enough written.

TonySopranosVest · 30/11/2015 13:11

Last one out, get the lights.

IPityThePontipines · 30/11/2015 13:11

I'm baffled that thread went to. Very strange indeed.

Ubik1 · 30/11/2015 13:11

I agree.
Satire spears to be beyond the pale now.
I think people just love getting a thread deleted. They love the feeling that they have the moral high ground. Even though they are usually mistaken.

Ubik1 · 30/11/2015 13:12

What was the thread about?

Amrapaali · 30/11/2015 13:12

Satire is dead and buried on MN. Happened more than a year ago I think Grin

Private Eye and the Daily Mash do a good line in satire. I think it's still at large among the general public, you do get a fair few sightings now and then.

Pantone363 · 30/11/2015 13:13

WHICH THREAD

limitedperiodonly · 30/11/2015 13:13

People are very literal-minded and there are literally millions of them on here. What was it about?

coffeeisnectar · 30/11/2015 13:14

Which thread?

LineyReborn · 30/11/2015 13:14

Which thread?

I agree there are a lot of humourless fuckers around at the moment. I assume their intention is to damage MN by making it almost impossible to enjoy being on a thead.

RaspberrySwitchblade · 30/11/2015 13:15

I see you, MN

I see you with your loose security, your increased revenue from advertising and your need to stay in the mainstream...

Lulabellarama · 30/11/2015 13:16

The thread about Peter Andre, it was C+P from the Facebook page 'I See You'. It's dark humour but very well written, I think it's a shame it was deleted But some posters had gone very 'Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells' so I guess it was inevitable.

Amrapaali · 30/11/2015 13:16

If it's the one about Peter Andre, I can understand. It wasnt satire, but really quite weird.

Ddint deserve a deletion though.....

FellOutOfBedTwice · 30/11/2015 13:16

Ive come back to post on that and seen it gone.... Don't get it at all- was linking to a really funny page!

Ubik1 · 30/11/2015 13:16

Love this private eye cover

Raspberry. Grin

HirplesWithHaggis · 30/11/2015 13:17

It was a thread about Peter Andre loving his kids. It was ranty and unpleasant and not very funny.

I like satire. I'm not convinced that was.

I would like to see more satire though.

FellOutOfBedTwice · 30/11/2015 13:17

Hahah Raspberry very good!

hiddenhome2 · 30/11/2015 13:18

Any link?

BurningBriquette · 30/11/2015 13:18

Scaevola - I agree - satire when well written is incredibly powerful. The thread was a copy and paste job from another website. About people in the public eye - it seemed a sort of satire/horror type mix. But my concern isn't really with that thread, as so much about what I see as a decline in satire (not a decline in quality - I'm not qualified to judge that as it is subjective) but a decline in mainstream satire - and as such a general decline in the masses (us) questioning and influencing the world around us.
