To wonder how a 'satirical' thread is deemed 'not in the spirit' of this site...

... and deleted toot suite, and to feel sad for the seeming decline of satire in general?

There is still a variety of satirical websites, publications and similar. But I feel not so much mainstream content ie regular popular tv programmes, aired at peak times. I also sense that satire is often misunderstood or that many people either don't ' get it' or refuse to get it. I long for an extra few tv and radio programmes dedicated to the satire of everyone and everything, from the great and the good to your everyday people.

Please someone reassure me that satire isn't dying or disappearing from the public consciousness? I think it plays an important role in politics, culture you name it.

Not quite a TAAT - more a personal concern that satire just seems to be slowly shrinking as a means of commentary in the UK.

Thank you, fellow posters Grin for "I See You". That is a work of twisted genius!

It's very, very well done.

And, yeah, the world's filling up with stupid. Stupid's understanding of "creativity" stops when it runs out of books to cut into Christmas tree shapes and glitter to stick onto household objects.

Never mind.

Satire died when the politicians started doing it and calling it policy

Dear lord, is that a thing ?

Whyohwhyohwhy?

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 30/11/2015 14:47

because this is not a satirical site

satire is to amuse, insult and be critical of some peoples choices

and that is not what mn wants to do

BurningBriquette · 30/11/2015 14:53

Enthusiasm, I disagree with your definition/purpose of satire. It has so many other uses for example for me - yes it can be used to simply entertain/amuse, but it can also be an important tool to question the world around us. To question those in power, or the perceived 'correct' way of doing things.

OP posts:
BurningBriquette · 30/11/2015 14:56

So because this site is not solely a satirical site - does that mean we can use it at all Enthusiasm? To entertain, to discuss the issues that matter to us and which will affect our families or children?

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 30/11/2015 15:02

yes it certainly can be but it is highly likely to insult someone especially religious satire

but again this is not a satirical site there are many good sites that are but I think we have probably passed the golden age of satire certainly in this country as society has changed so much

and satire when directed at one person is going to be insulting is it not? is that what MN wants to do no so that is why the thread was deleted

I though it was a bit too try hard and that is never funny

bettyberry · 30/11/2015 15:05

I found it funny and dark. The whole kids and Peter Andre with his perma-grin was, to me, a dig at his obvious money making side appearing on all these TV shows wiki tells me he has been in a TV show every year since 2004 Shock like some weird game show demon in a sequin tux that never ages.

OK maybe I might be weird.

ExitPursuedByABear · 30/11/2015 15:10

Well it made me laugh.

A bit.

Nassau · 30/11/2015 16:54

The Irish site waterfordwhispersnews.com/ (and Facbook page) is good for this. Sometimes the stories are picked up by other countries as "true news", whuch can create some hilarious comments.

Cornettoninja · 30/11/2015 17:09

It's a dark, imho, fairly clever little twist on the whole 'I love my kids' catchphrase PA has going on, it specifically goes out of its way to make sure that it's not referencing his actual children for those who might struggle with comprehension.

Meh, no idea why someone would get their knickers in a twist over it.

More generally there does seem to be an abundance of teller offers at the moment very quick to jump on the most innocuous parts of people's posts in the name of 'educating' them about whichever agenda they're currently championing. The thread about that poor child who died was momentarily derailed into animal cruelty or some such iirc - till they were quite rightly told to pipe the fuck down.

I suspect it's a rare talent to be able to distinguish between what it actually offensive and peoples sensitivities. It's impossible to cater for the latter and frankly it's up to the person concerned to moderate their own reaction and disengage.

Paraphrasing Stephen Fry, but nobody has the right to never be offended. Tough, freedom of speech and all that means that you're going to come across all sorts you don't agree with or necessarily understand.

hackmum · 30/11/2015 17:22

I just read the link and didn't find it very funny but then I don't know much about Peter Andre, and care even less.

I suppose apart from anything else MN could have deleted it for copyright infringement.

hazeyjane · 30/11/2015 18:34

Paraphrasing Stephen Fry, but nobody has the right to never be offended.

Ugh, I hate that bloody quote, and have seen it quoted when defending disabilist crap, where it seems everyone's line of what constitutes insulting, hurtful and damaging, is much higher than racism etc.

I also don't think that quote has much relevance to this fb piece and why it was deleted.

Rudeabaga · 30/11/2015 21:14

I thought the post referred to was very funny and dark. Unfortunately when I checked out the Facebook page there was a rather vicious personal attack on Germaine Greer which wasn't funny in the slightest so I won't be following them.

AnyFucker · 30/11/2015 21:31

It was perfectly clear the op was not the poster's original work. Some people thought it was, showing their own lack of reading comprehension and sent the thread off in the wrong direction.

swiggityswoogity · 30/11/2015 21:38

Mumsnet is a safe space now

Garlick · 30/11/2015 22:26

Should we join hands and sing Kumbaya?

BurningBriquette · 30/11/2015 23:19

Garlick your singing, laughing, crying, praying and sleeping offends me. Oh lord Kumbaya.

If people don't like a post then they don't have to read it again. Just ignore it. No need to run off telling tales to teacher.

I thought it was amusing, but then I understood what "kids" it was on about........
