To wonder how a 'satirical' thread is deemed 'not in the spirit' of this site...

... and deleted toot suite, and to feel sad for the seeming decline of satire in general?

There is still a variety of satirical websites, publications and similar. But I feel not so much mainstream content ie regular popular tv programmes, aired at peak times. I also sense that satire is often misunderstood or that many people either don't ' get it' or refuse to get it. I long for an extra few tv and radio programmes dedicated to the satire of everyone and everything, from the great and the good to your everyday people.

Please someone reassure me that satire isn't dying or disappearing from the public consciousness? I think it plays an important role in politics, culture you name it.

Not quite a TAAT - more a personal concern that satire just seems to be slowly shrinking as a means of commentary in the UK.

OP posts:
Flashbangandgone · 30/11/2015 13:33

Satire almost inevitably involves offending some people.... and this site has a number of people who are quick to take offense. Causing any sort of offense seems to be a cardinal sin on here!

BathshebaDarkstone · 30/11/2015 13:33

No Milk it didn't end with Peter Andre killing his kids. Obviously you didn't read the OP. Confused

LineyReborn · 30/11/2015 13:34

I presume he sacrificed some small goats?

OstentatiousBreastfeeder · 30/11/2015 13:34

His KIDS. The legion of evil baby goats he keeps in a vault.

RaspberrySwitchblade · 30/11/2015 13:34

even if you don't agree with the content, what happened to being able to, you know discuss things that we see?

you know, like, real grown ups?

OstentatiousBreastfeeder · 30/11/2015 13:35

It would be character assassination if any of it was remotely plausible.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 30/11/2015 13:35

You're right. Too long and I got bored after 2 paragraphs. That bit I picked up on as I skim past the end of the OP. I just thought that might be why it was deleted.

limitedperiodonly · 30/11/2015 13:36

Although that was a good one

No Liney he fed people to some small goats. I thought it was weird, but not worth deleting. Confused

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 30/11/2015 13:37

BABY GOATS???

Now that is upsetting, demonic or not.

Do Iceland do goat meat?

LineyReborn · 30/11/2015 13:39

Thank you Bathsheba weird indeed! So weird that it's hardly to be taken seriously, is it? Just a bit bonkers.

DrasticAction · 30/11/2015 13:39

How odd, and yet it seemed a thread judging how parents who lost a child, behaved at their childs funeral, was allowed to stay...

viioletsarentblue · 30/11/2015 13:40

Thanks for bringing the site I See You to my attention MN. I would never have heard of it otherwise. Smile

(settles down to a nice afternoon reading through all the I See You's)

Sparkletastic · 30/11/2015 13:41

I took it as satire. The po-facedness threw me into a morose 'this wouldn't have been the response back in the good old days of MN' mood.

absolutelynotfabulous · 30/11/2015 13:43

raspberry I agree. It's like someone has decided that we need to be protected from things that may cause "offence".

I'd rather make up my own mind about what I find offensive, thanks! And if I don't like something, I'd rather have the opportunity to navigate away from it.

LineyReborn · 30/11/2015 13:43

Two threads I'm on which were funny have gone tits up thanks to the po-faced ones over the last few days.

RamblingRedRose · 30/11/2015 13:47

I didn't even make it through that one. People are actually reading more?

Daisysbear · 30/11/2015 13:51

I can't comment on that particular thread as I didn't see it, but in general satire seems to be a disappearing art on MN.

So many posters who don't get irony, and even more who just seem to going around with a sour milk face taking offence at everything and anything. MNHQ should tell some of them to just stop being silly arses, instead of pandering to their attention seeking whinging and whining.

catfordbetty · 30/11/2015 13:56

I didn't see the thread but it's true, I think, that satire very often divides opinion. The letters page of Private Eye is testament to this: very frequently the first letters are from readers who are either cancelling or renewing their subscriptions because they have been outraged or delighted by the front cover. And these are people who are up for a bit of satire, as it were.

Shutthatdoor · 30/11/2015 13:57

It was a thread about Peter Andre loving his kids. It was ranty and unpleasant and not very funny.

I like satire. I'm not convinced that was.

I agree

ComposHatComesBack · 30/11/2015 13:57

Wasn't particularly funny or well written, but can't see why it merited getting zapped.

If it's the thread I'm thinking of about s certain celebrate they have a notoriously litigious management.
