Aibu to think you don't put your tree up in November?

I've just seen my first Christmas tree post on Facebook. WTF! It's November.

It was hard to stop myself from putting a sarcastic pithy comment on their post. Trees should not be decorated until December, although it's OK in shops/restaurants once Hallowe'en is out of the way.

Anyway, it looks like a real one. I'll have the last laugh when all her needles fall off by the time I get mine up (the week before Christmas, like any sane person).

Yanbu. Ours will go up on the 17th Dec.

Flashbangandgone · 30/11/2015 07:16

Wow... So many Christmas trees up already on here... References to thanksgiving here so wonder if all these are UK?

Obviously people are free to do what they like and put stuff up in June If they want to... But I'm also free not to like it. I love Christmas, but it's not Christmas, it's November! Doing stuff so early does tend to mean are sick of Christmas when it is actually Christmas in the 25th.

We don't celebrate New Year on 15th December, or our birthday's weeks before the event, so why does Christmas need to be pushed forward to such an extent. Shops have had decorations up early for as long as I can remember, but it's only been in the past few years there's been such a race by some to put up decorations and walk round with reindeer antlers and Christmas jumpers in November! Just seems a bit silly to me.

Flashbangandgone · 30/11/2015 07:18

St Lucy???

Is it just me but I've never heard of that one! When is it?

LumpySpacedPrincess · 30/11/2015 07:18

Meh I'm not fed up of it at all, I just have a very different feeling about January. January is a month when I deep clean the house, start new projects, stop drinking for a month! Grin

I'm not sick of my tree, it has served it's purpose.

Christmas, for me, ends on the 31st and starts near the 1st December. I love coming in from work and putting the lights on.

AuntieStella · 30/11/2015 07:22

St Lucy's Day is big in Sweden (and on Blue Peter, at least when I was young). 13 December, and a celebration of light (lux).

ArmchairTraveller · 30/11/2015 07:23

St Lucy is the 13th, I used to share a student house and one of the guys was Swedish. So, candles, fancy bread and singing. With a lot of alcohol to keep out the cold.
I assimilate traditions I like!

chrome100 · 30/11/2015 07:25

Well we don't even bother getting a tree (no kids if that excuses us) so I think November is very early!

Mehitabel6 · 30/11/2015 07:28

Anticipation is half the excitement- it misses all that out for the child if the parent can't wait.

GoneAndDone · 30/11/2015 07:30

I don't have a tree up yet but did put some Xmas lights up in the front window after redecorating the room at the weekend and bloody love them. It's so grey and gloomy out that anything light and bright really makes a difference.

It makes more sense to me to enjoy Xmas decorations for a whole month rather than just a week or two.

NewBallsPlease00 · 30/11/2015 07:31

It's the first weekend if advent

ThursdayLastWeek · 30/11/2015 07:31

That's exactly right Mehitabel. I find it I bit odd that so many adults can't enjoy a bit of anticipation!
I think it waters down the fun later in the month.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 30/11/2015 07:33

But having the tree up is part of the anticipation, coming on from a long school day and putting the tree lights on, doing some baking or christmas crafts.

ArmchairTraveller · 30/11/2015 07:46

I spend Advent field-testing mulled wine recipes so that I'm prepared by Christmas. And baking.

Aramynta · 30/11/2015 07:47

Put mine up with the kids and DH yesterday. DH wont be here during the week and DC are at nursery/school/clubs.

Next weekend we are away and we are busy every other weekend before visiting family, who are spread across the country. So it was now or no Chrstmas tree!

Sallystyle · 30/11/2015 07:51

Who said we can't enjoy a bit of anticipation because we have a tree up? :/

It might water down the fun for you but obviously it doesn't for us or we wouldn't have it up. It's just a tree. Something pretty to look at which gives you a cosy feeling in shit winter evenings.

Like I said, this is the first time I have ever put a tree up so early, it's just sitting there looking pretty not watering down my fun for later in the month.

Anticipation is half the excitement- it misses all that out for the child if the parent can't wait.

Nope, my children are just as excited for Xmas holiday, Xmas eve/day etc. Putting up the tree early has not made my children miss out on any anticipation.

It's just a tree people.

PresidentUnderwood · 30/11/2015 07:54

Our tree is going up tomorrow because I love advent.

I'm quite capable of acknowledging that everyone does things differently and that's fine, I don't need to mock or judge to get self satisfaction

colleysmill · 30/11/2015 07:56

I'm sure when I was young we never saw Christmas decorations up before mid Dec - mind you it was also unheard of to see shops with Christmas cards in in Aug.

A few years ago I wanted to buy a garland for the stairs and was told rather snottily by a garden centre they had sold out and I had left it too late. It was the first weekend in November! And the year we rushed out to buy a tree on the 19th Dec (we'd been decorating) we got an absolute bargain because apparently we were very late buying one.

I can't say it bothers me that other people have their trees up now but for me personally it's too early. And I adore Christmas.

timeforabrewnow · 30/11/2015 07:58

Each to their own and Merry Christmas!

Potatoface2 · 30/11/2015 08:00

i put mine up this week.....its such and effort to do....what with working, kids, housework, shopping, etc.....to put it up for a few days seems hardly worthwhile.....so i put mine up early to sort of make it worth it....and the children love it.....also when they are up its hardly worth dusting/cleaning around it !

BrianButterfield · 30/11/2015 08:12

Mine's up and it's not because I have a quiet life - quite the opposite - it's because this is the only weekend between now and Christmas that we had time to do it properly!

Toraleistripe · 30/11/2015 08:15

Well people can do what they wish in relation to this but I am with you OP. I bloody hate it. I leave mine as long as possible.

Traditionally trees went up Xmas Eve and came down 12th night. Now they go up start Dec and are down around Boxing Day! I blame the commercialism of Xmas. They want us to spend BEFORE Xmas and so everything is shifted forward.

Toraleistripe · 30/11/2015 08:16

To those who do it early......does the novelty not wear off by week 3! It would drive me mad.

Anotherusername1 · 30/11/2015 08:19

I would probably wait until the Sunday before Christmas but my husband and son want to put ours up next weekend. Oh well.

I agree November is too early although yesterday was the first Sunday in Advent, so I do have my welcome lights out now.

It's rubbish when your birthday is in November and the Christmas stuff all starts so prematurely. That said, it's not just Nov/Dec birthdays that are affected these days. Feb birthday? Shops full of Valentines Day cards, don't try to buy an actual birthday card! March? Mother's Day. Forget it if you want a nice (non rip-off) lunch out when your birthday clashes with Mother's Day! I suppose the same applies in June for Father's Day. And then, of course, in October, you have Halloween. It's really tiresome.

Sallystyle · 30/11/2015 08:22

Yeah, the novelty of the tree probably will wear off but I will be just as excited for Xmas.

We have a real one this year, I'm sure the needles will piss me off by tomorrow Grin but I am enjoying the cosy feeling of the lights. Ours is potted, we need to try to keep it alive for next year.

We haven't put the bulb lights up yet though.

Sallystyle · 30/11/2015 08:23

Yes, trying to find a nice card for my June children can be hard with Father's Day cards. Thank god for Moon Pig.
