They only ever seem to be used to diminish and try to shut down discussion. To deflect from somebody's argument without addressing it, and to try to make the other person look irrational and/or mean spirited, or to characterise their point as an overreaction, however moderately it's been been put. They are the polemical equivalent of playing the player not the ball.

The words are froth/frothing/frothers, sneer/sneery/sneering and hate/haters.

Will Nyone join me in. Moratorium?

It's quite accurate with my fat belly

JassyRadlett · 28/11/2015 16:57

Goadyâ„¢ in its true MN sense is the only word I can think of to describe some posters and threads; I can't think of an equivalent. It wasn't me who came up with it, btw; I can't remember who it was though

It's what my mum would have called 'stirring' when my siblings and I did it to each other. Grin

limitedperiodonly · 28/11/2015 17:07

I want to ban people who say they want to hide topics.

Usually it's when a feminist thought strays into Chat. It's often accompanied by the bleat: 'I don't like the term "menz" and switch off then I see it.'

Sadly, you don't switch off. You stick around whining.

Just don't fucking open them, or if you do, say your piece and fuck off.

AliceScarlett · 28/11/2015 17:34

I love special snowflake!

I'm going to go for "unhinged".

Maryz when did most active become trending?

Have the young folk taken over? Shock

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 28/11/2015 18:09

I just thought of another one.

"Virtue signaller" used when someone is just actually saying caring things.

I've noticed the "Trending" switch too. I keep muttering under my breath "this isn't Twitter" as I read it. I'm so old Blush.

My three are:

Go
No
Contact

Makes me cringe every time. Not the concept of ceasing contact with someone with whom you have an unhealthy/toxic relationship, or who is abusive/shitty towards you, but the phrase.

'Go no contact'.

Just so trite, overused and self-righteous. Makes me shudder.

icy121 · 28/11/2015 18:40

Nowt wrong with 'cunt'.

AbeSaidYes · 28/11/2015 18:42

I would get rid of 'precious first born' particularly when used to try to tell parents that they are just stressing out because they only have one child so far.

'You're over-thinking it'.

No - I'm just thinking. You're under-thinking.

I'm a fully paid up, life-time member of the LTB brigade (we are, inevitably, talking about an actual bastard; why wouldn't you leave him?). And probably a few other brigades, too.

Keeptrudging · 28/11/2015 19:01

I love pfb, it's what I call my hubby Grin.

Special snowflake I like too, I've taught lots of them. All children are individuals, i like them like that. Special snowflakes would generally be lovely children if it wasn't for their mothers, who expect (unnecessary) extra special treatment or attention for their child and are always the ones who collar me to ask something inane.

Wagglebees · 28/11/2015 19:57

"So, what are you going to do about it?"

Well she doesn't fecking know does she? That's why she's posting.

Idefix · 28/11/2015 20:46

Really hate froths/frother, someone said I was being a bit frothy recently Hmm urm no I was just expressing my viewpoint rather passionately.

But love Biscuit and rancid Chocolate

Some words/phrases such as entitled and goady are very overused and misused.

As for special snowflake I am claiming it for myself Grin

Not read the full thread.
But something inside of me died a little but when I saw who started it.

Soz and all that.

reni2 · 28/11/2015 21:47

Agree OP, but I wouldn't specify words or phrases, it boils down to attempts to diminish and try to shut down discussion.

I don't know when that became acceptable, it is the equivalent of pointing and laughing. Maybe we need a "point and laugh" emoticon, it might be slightly less insulting than the attempted verbal ridiculing.

ExitPursuedByABear · 28/11/2015 21:50

Actually. This thread could signal the end of mn.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 28/11/2015 22:16
