They only ever seem to be used to diminish and try to shut down discussion. To deflect from somebody's argument without addressing it, and to try to make the other person look irrational and/or mean spirited, or to characterise their point as an overreaction, however moderately it's been been put. They are the polemical equivalent of playing the player not the ball.

The words are froth/frothing/frothers, sneer/sneery/sneering and hate/haters.

Will Nyone join me in. Moratorium?

OP posts:
LemonRedwood · 28/11/2015 10:36

But plantsitter, that's precisely why teachers use "little Jonny".

Totally agree with frothing (only things that should be frothing/frothy are drinks and even then...) and haters (where did that word even come from?)

Bettercallsaul1 · 28/11/2015 10:37

You've obviously struck a chord here, BR!

But I get what you're saying. We shouldn't attack the poster - or put them into a "group" which we can then ignore ie frothers, haters etc - but instead counter the argument or statement being made.

Ladywithababy1 · 28/11/2015 10:39

What does 'menz' mean?

Spartak · 28/11/2015 10:40

Can I add much?

As in entitled much. Really annoys me. And doesn't mean anything.

HamaTime · 28/11/2015 10:40

I hate 'grabby', particularly when it's about a normal societal expectation that at certain times gift giving and receiving is expected.

'Tacky' is sometimes a substitute for 'grabby', and if the grabby person is about to give birth, they might also be 'vile' and/or 'American' Hmm

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 28/11/2015 10:42

I'd get rid of "boils my piss". What's wrong with "pisses me off".

I agree about all variants of getting a grip, and fucking off.

Oh and "SN brigade", "playing the SN card" etc.

Janeymoo50 · 28/11/2015 10:43

Bully....sometimes used correctly but often not (in the context of calling other MNetters this when someone disagrees with a post).

QueenLaBeefah · 28/11/2015 10:46

Cannot stand "pearl clutching"

Also hate when people finish a sentence like this ...............

FrancesOldhamKelsey · 28/11/2015 10:48

I don't see "haters" much on MN. Digital Spy, yes.

Stuff I occasionally see on other forums which is in a whole other league of "you have nothing of interest to say to me" includes: Libtards/Leftards/nanny state/Bliar/Micro$oft.

Not too keen on anyone who calls George Osborne Gideon either - I've got a mate called Gideon and don't agree that having been christened that or changing your mind about what you want to be called is automatically some form of insult. Don't mind Call Me Dave for Cameron because that does actually say something about his personality.

According to teen DD1 'special snowflake' is not just found on MN it is a popular internet forum word...
(DD spends her life on the internet - she calls MN 'tumblr for old people')
I use the word 'vile' in RL - always have - it is a good word- much shorter and more descriptive than most of the equivalents (unpleasant, revolting, etc)...really don't know what people have against it Confused -
but then I guess DD also tells me I sound like I have swallowed a dictionary sometimes ...apparently it is not cool...or whatever the on trend version of the word cool is these days - sigh

BathtimeFunkster · 28/11/2015 10:51

I'll join your campaign Arfarf Grin

Other than that all I'm seeing are people moaning about the ways people talk on MN, some of which are community shorthands.

I think threads moaning about the latest MN words to be falling out of favour are a type of social signal similar to the use of terms like "special snowflake".

No, we can't ban words. But we can make it clear which words are no longer to be used by people wanting to make it clear they are regulars.

Trickydecision · 28/11/2015 10:52

Worra Grin. I did actually laugh, well snigger, out loud at that. No spattered keyboards involved.

I hate 'gives me the rage'. Does anyone really say that? Why not 'makes me angry' ?

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 28/11/2015 10:52

'Give your head a wobble' is vile (sorry, liptolinford !)

Sorry multivac but 'vile' is irritating as hell Smile

Perspective.

Utterly pisses me off when someone doesn't agree with the op and pulls this one.

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 28/11/2015 10:57

That's the way we like it Maryz.

BrianCoxReborn · 28/11/2015 10:58

Do you remember the phase of "reader, I married him" to end a story.

The first time I saw it I thought "ha, I like that" then everyone started using it and it boiled my piss Grin

BrandNewAndImproved · 28/11/2015 10:58

There's nothing wrong with any of those words,

It's the context they're used in

HTH you rude pearl clutching toxic narcissistic sociopaths

Wink
KaluzaKlein · 28/11/2015 10:59

Can I add incorrect use of 'either' and 'could care less'?

As in I don't like that...
Me either!

And

'I could care less about xx'

It's couldn't care less, Ffs! And me neither!

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 28/11/2015 10:59

I really like the usefulness and specificity of sneer/sneery too. Sorry OP Grin
