To think that there is a serious lack of perspective on mn now to the point it is not actually possible to have a decent discussion any more?

Yes, thread inspired by lots of threads but provoked by the flaming I have just had on one in particular. But not a thread about that particular thread.

It seems lately that it is impossible to have an actual discussion on mn without someone either misinterpreting, misreading, twisting, or generally overreacting to everything

Example: poster starts a lighthearted thread about something which it should be obvious that it is lighthearted. A few posts in someone decides to take it very seriously and give the op a flaming. A few more posts in and someone suggests the thread title should be edited by mn hq to ensure people realise it's lighthearted, even though the subject was something like "ibu to burn the house down because I found a spider in the bathroom?"

Or: "ibu to think it's the end of the world because dh ate the chocolate?" response: "there are children dying in the world how dare you even post about chocolate," meant very seriously.

And yes, on the thread I was just on, recounting an incident 35 years ago where my cousin sent out fake invitations to a party unbeknowns to his parents and children turned up. Shock obviously mortifying at the time but 35 years on it's something that his friends remember and laugh at, something which was brought up in his best man's wedding speech, and yes, something which 35 years on is amusing in a "OMG his parents were mortified," way. And yet I have just been told I am sick in the head for finding children's utter devastation over a party they didn't attend 35 years ago amusing.

Mn has always been supportive but has also always had a reputation for being amusing, funny, lighthearted etc, but it is rapidly losing that reputation IMO.

P&B..? ESD?

Translation please !I don't remember said invasion. Pesky RL.

Chippednailvarnish · 26/11/2015 20:59

I love pie and Bovril.

At least it wasn't south and further south which is what mine might be named!

Sparklingbrook · 26/11/2015 21:00

P&B=Pie and Bovril a site about Scottish football.
ESD=the poster known as EatShitDerek

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 26/11/2015 21:00

Pie & Bovril ,Ifnot.

Somehow I managed to miss that invasion. I don't know how.

MistressMerryWeather · 26/11/2015 21:00

They were quite nice Sparkling, as stunt breasts go anyway.

And if I recall correctly was P & B written in brown eyeliner.

Shexy.

Sparklingbrook · 26/11/2015 21:02

Oh good. I would like to think my stunt breasts were as fabulous as my real ones. Grin

MistressMerryWeather · 26/11/2015 21:03

You were well represented. :o

Chippednailvarnish · 26/11/2015 21:05

'Ere Sparkling show us yer tits!

awaits calls of bullying / sexist / insulting behaviour Wink

SwedishEdith · 26/11/2015 21:06

What was the P&B invasion?

I honestly think it's always been like this - goes through phases. I do avoid 90+% of threads now though and have lots of 'type, think twice, delete' moments. But, I do still find plenty that makes me laugh and plenty of funny, intelligent people around - it's just not always in the obvious places.

Ta chaps. Never been good at acronyms.

IfNotNowThenWhenever · 26/11/2015 21:10

Agree btw, lots of angry and humourless self righteousness going about lately.

bumbleymummy · 26/11/2015 21:16

Just opened another thread to see that the tone has already been set within a few posts. Sigh...it could have been quite an interesting discussion as well. Some posters come across as unnecessarily aggressive in their posting style. I'm not sure why they don't get called out on it more often.

originalmavis · 26/11/2015 21:18

Sparkling bits? All sounds very festive. Mind the holly though.

ginslinger · 26/11/2015 21:39

Moldies - now there was a bunfight. i lost most of christmas that year

Wombat87 · 26/11/2015 22:42

I wasn't around for the nicer mums net. My first ever post got me roasted. Me asking how I could ask my sister to be more involved in her wedding (I'm travelling for a year before emigrating) turned into a spat filled with "she doesn't want you as bridesmaid, she just feels obligated", "you clearly don't care about her", "bridesmaidzilla" and all sorts of terrible things. I ended up giving so much away in my defence (first mistake), I had to get it deleted for fear of someone recognising me. Honestly... I have no idea how or why they even think half the things they do. I was concerned for their families if that's how they are in life.

Horrible horrible bitches. That being said... I did have a sly dig at one hateful bitch in another thread afterwards. And I know IRL I could definitely take em. No one with that much malice for strangers when behind a keyboard has ever had a backbone. Bastard keyboard warriors with no life is all they are. Well done on putting that PP troll back under her bridge Wink

Samcro · 26/11/2015 22:44

nice calling people bitches cos they didn't agree with you!!
surely that is what that is all about, people being so nasty

Chippednailvarnish · 26/11/2015 22:47

Mmm, I remember the wedding thread and you did come across as rather self absorbed.
Maybe you should stick to taking the bitches in RL.Hmm

What on earth was P&B doing with sparkling's boobies? This must have been Pre 2012

Quiero · 26/11/2015 23:01

Fuckng hell Wombat, I think you may have missed the tone of the thread somewhat there.

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 26/11/2015 23:01

I came upon MN just before Moldies, when all was grass and I had a child permanently attached to my tit, Moldies happened in my first Christmas as a Mother - IT WAS FUCKING BRILLIANT, drama, pathos, hatred, wit, bile and more. I hadn't got a fucking clue what was going on but I wanted it. I used to post loads under a different name, had MN buddies and all sorts.

Now? Cannot be arsed. I have much respect and kudos for those who I recognise from years ago that still post in the same name but I look at threads and can't summon the energy to post (I had a huge outing and had to go incognito).

Penis beaker was a low, now ANY thread where a man's cock is mentioned collapses into fucking hilarity, and ROARS. The intrinsic wit has been lost under a pile of po and a stampede of basic boots.

Even SGB has a boyf, that ain't right (though I like it, even mundanity can be a perversion if you push it hard enough).

BUT WHERE ARE MY PEOPLE? (I scream into the maw, 'They got old', the Universe says, 'As you did,, deal with it woman, the new people came along, the old people always thought they were better, always thought they had the handle, the shipdabidibab, but they just got old')

WELL FUCK YOU UNIVERSE AND FUCK YOU young people. Fuck you and fuck your non-funny manifestations.

CFSsucks · 26/11/2015 23:03

I agree. The thing that really boils my piss is an OP will ask for advice etc and someone will pipe up with unasked for advice that is completely irrelevant. For example I've seen posters talking about a dickhead partner who was treating them badly and wanted advice on a particular aspect of the relationship and someone will wade in and say "why did you have children will this man" and stuff like that. It's not helpful, it's just twattery.

Same with a poster asking for advice and you will get loads of people piling in and picking apart the OP and being like a dog with a bone, ignoring the main issue and the OP has to defend themselves. It's really unpleasant to see.

CuffsAndCollar · 26/11/2015 23:08

And now it all becomes clear, it's shit now because... the moldies came back Grin
