aibu to hate how unbelievably pretentious this advert is....
For those who haven't seen it, JA wakes from a nightmare in her first class bed on a Emirates flight panicking she's on a plane without a cocktail bar on board... Only to be mightily relieved when she finds it was only a ghastly dream as there is a bat after all!

Who is this ad aimed at given the price of that kind of ticket is what most people would spend on a car. It just seems like a crass way of her flaunting her millions!

I know this isn't important in the grand scheme of things, but it just grates massively!

I would not have a shower on a plane no matter how long the flight.

BYOSnowman · 25/11/2015 20:28

There was an economist article a couple of years back but if you google you will find articles I'm sure

It's kind of what you would expect given where they are based!

LadyShirazz · 25/11/2015 20:29

Me too!!!! Hate hate hate that one...

beardsrock · 25/11/2015 20:29

Good point, BYO.

My friend worked for them and was told she had to remain the same size, she wouldn't be given another uniform if she gained/lost weight.

Also told to wear certain make-up etc.

I like JA too. I'd have whored myself to for the money she earned from that ad.

But do people who can afford that sort of travel actually watch commercial TV...? I'm lost.

beardsrock · 25/11/2015 20:32

Apparently they used to weigh staff every week!!?

Make sure they hadn't gained any weight. Also spot alcohol/drug tests too.

They had a race quota for every intake of air hostesses i.e. 10 Asians, 1 red head, 3 blondes, 3 brunettes etc.

She lived in Dubai and hated it.

BYOSnowman · 25/11/2015 20:34

in some airlines you serve first class as a promotion from business from economy etc (I assume because it is easier to serve fewer people)

At others the young and prettiest serve first, then business then economy

Which I find a bit sad really.

flustercuck · 25/11/2015 20:36

My pal who was crew on a British airline doing mainly domestic flights got weighed, told to trowel on the slap and endured checks to make sure she'd shaved her armpits (lest a traveling businessman looked up her blouse sleeve and felt offended).

Emirates are not the only ones.

beardsrock · 25/11/2015 20:36

Yup, BYO that's what I heard too.

Ack. Not my cup of tea.

beardsrock · 25/11/2015 20:37

Jesus flustercuck, thought it was only Emirates!

Utterlyclueless · 25/11/2015 20:43

Emirates staff seem to work more hours than would be allowed in the UK it's quite dangerous.

They're treated terrible a lot of my friends work for them but they put up with it to get to travel the world for free.

BabyGanoush · 25/11/2015 20:44

I like the ad, it is a joke yet serious

and I find myself wanting to fly Emirates first class (will never have the money)

so the ad works for me

only that it does not really, as I am too poor to be their target market...

AnyFucker · 25/11/2015 20:47

it can't be as bad as the shite Nicole Kidman is currently "starring" in

now that woman disturbs me

BYOSnowman · 25/11/2015 20:47

Yes - I saw the program where they were showing the new recruits and there was a big emphasis on appearance (ba I mean)

But at least they can get married and have kids and keep their job!

Bambambini · 25/11/2015 20:49

Of course it's not only Emirates.

AutumnLeavesArePretty · 25/11/2015 20:52

I like it, she has a sense of humour and it's very tongue in cheek.

notafanofwinter · 25/11/2015 20:54

I'm fascinated about the travellers who sit in First.

If someone offered me £10K to miss a nights sleep I wouldn't think twice and it's not as if you get there any quicker.

The only time we've turned left is using Airmiles or if DH's company were paying it would occur to me to pay such a hefty supplement. And the was in Club.

But people do, all those cabins can't be full of business folks on expense accounts.

DaemonPantalaemon · 25/11/2015 20:55

You can bet your sweet patootie that that ad is not aired in America

Considering that she got a lot of stick from American commentators for being in an advert that mocks an airline with a livery that looks rather like American Airlines, that is not a bet I am willing to take.

Also told to wear certain make-up etc.

It is one particular, and very red, lipstick that they are supposed to wear, to go with the red in the Emirates livery. The women also tie their hair back in a particular style that goes with their little pillbox hats with the attached veil. Kind of goes with the territory of wearing a uniform, no?

I imagine that of you do not want to wear such a uniform, including the matchy-matchy hair and lipstick, you find ourself another job? No one is sentenced to eternal servitude with Emirates surely? As far as I know, working with Emirates is actually highly coveted.

RachelZoe · 25/11/2015 21:00

OP, don't take it so seriously, it's a tongue in cheek ad for a luxury product. It quite obviously isn't intended to offend anyone. The reaction to this ad in general has been bizarre.

You can bet your sweet patootie that that ad is not aired in America.

It has been aired in America Hearts, also, doing secret global ads isn't done anymore, with youtube/global celeb coverage etc, it's fairly pointless when anyone can see them anytime.

DeoGratias · 25/11/2015 21:16

Best air line I've been on.
Mind you I had 3 or 4 seats to myself on the flight back so that helped too.

Makes a change not to have fat staff as well actually and I say that as a woman who is not even gay or bi.

AGnu · 25/11/2015 21:17

I had a dream that I was on a plane that had a swimming pool & soft play a few weeks ago. I refused to go in the pool in case we hit turbulence or something. Twas a very funky plane though. I think Emirates just aren't thinking big enough! Wink

prh47bridge · 25/11/2015 21:19

As RachelZoe says, it HAS been aired in America. It was shown there in early October before it was rolled out across Europe.
