I'm always a bit meh Confused

I don't think her voice is anywhere near as amazing as a lot of the 'great' female singers that we've had.

I love some of her songs and am ambivalent about others.

Am I missing something?

Personally I think when she was on form Amy Winehouse was an amazing talent. So sad she went young.

Adele can't cut it live imho. Always goes down a note when the recording actually goes up -have you noticed that?

No sure I get the big fuss about Adele either.

laffymeal · 21/11/2015 15:07

I've noticed her going down a note when the recording goes up. Ironically an Adele impersonator could do a better job of singing live than the real thing could.

expatinscotland · 21/11/2015 15:10

She does my nut. Warble, warble, warple. And depressing as all fuck. The world's a depressing enough place without sad fucking music.

LassWiTheWeelStockitFarm · 21/11/2015 15:26

Her music is awful. Bland, mass market muzak. I agree with others who have said that, technically she does not have a good voice.

Does she actually write her own songs or is it "writing " in the sense of the label pulling in a team of professional song writers who collaborate with her? (i. e any input by her, no matter how minimal, counts as writing)

DCITennison · 21/11/2015 15:29

She doesn't make he sort of music I like, but she's obviously very successful and therefore very good at what she does.

She's not obliged to please everyone, she makes the music she wants to, sings in the way she wants to and has no shortage of people who love her for it.

I don't understand the way some are talking about her as though she's pulling some sort of trick by being successful, as though the people buying her music or positively reviewing her music just haven't realised that she's not that good. No, she may not be your cup of tea, she isn't mine, but her success is genuine.

I don't rate Queen but that doesn't mean they're shit and it's just clever old me who has seen through their smoke and mirrors.

What Tennyson said

penguinsarecool · 21/11/2015 16:40

I think she needs to write some more upbeat songs and lyrics. They are all similar bitter/'poor me' songs about her ex.

Kessy2 · 21/11/2015 16:58

I find her and her lyrics whiny and annoying.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 21/11/2015 17:18

Kitty your spelling put me in mind of tha rag-and-bone man: 'raeeeg-booooowne, aeeenny raaeeeg-booowne'!

Paloma Faith is snother one who puts on a weird accent/voice when she sings.

BonnieF · 21/11/2015 18:11

Adele is not a "technically great" singer. She really isn't. Her voice has plenty of power, but a very limited range and poor dynamics. She is not remotely in the same league as Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston or Agnetha Faltskog, never mind Mariah Carey.

Listen to Whitney's isolated vocal track on 'how will I know' (on youtube), Agnetha's performance of 'the winner takes it all'. Then listen to Mariah's range on 'without you' and 'emotions' back to back. She goes from almost baritone to notes that only dogs can hear! That's what the great female pop singers sound like...

Crinkle77 · 21/11/2015 18:20

I really like some of songs like Rolling in the Deep and Chasing Pavements but not her more recent stuff. Her new song is pretty unforgettable and actually rather dull. She also has poor diction and at times I can't make out the words.

LimboNovember · 21/11/2015 18:20

It said something along the lines of it's 5 years later and she is still metaphorically crying on her ex boyfriends front lawn, throwing her shoes at his window

^ brilliant and so true.

But how many people feel like she does.

Millions.

And they buy her albums. But I agree on depressing music.

LimboNovember · 21/11/2015 18:20

who is this ex BF though and how does her new man and the father of her dc feel about this!

MitzyLeFrouf · 21/11/2015 19:20

But it's not just about a great voice is it? Yes Mariah and Whitney have great voices but they convey zero emotion, it's all just vocal acrobatics.

My favourite vocalists are ones that make me feel all the feelings! Like Sandy Denny. She breaks my heart. Or Nina Simone.

IoraRua · 21/11/2015 19:26

I don't mind her too much, she seems nice. But the voice grates on me and the songs - once I've heard it once, I've no desire to ever hear it again.

I don't understand how Sam Smith is so popular, he's dreadful. Dreary and whiny.

BreakfastAtStephanies · 21/11/2015 19:41

I dislike listening to Adele and will switch her songs off.
I would much rather listen to Bananarama.

iklboo · 21/11/2015 19:49

At least she seems to refrain from the 'hand in the air, palm forwards, bent over like you're trying to have a poo while doing a scrunched up face' pose that loads of others like to do.......

NoahVale · 21/11/2015 20:46

oh i cant bear paloma faith's singing

squoosh · 21/11/2015 21:13

Paloma Faith's yowling version of World In Union was actual torture to listen to.

LovelyFriend · 23/11/2015 11:13

So 25 went platinum in one day in UK, and sold 1.9million copies in USA in 2 days.
She is smashing all records.
Whatever you think of her voice, a heck of a lot of people 'get' Adele and want to buy her album - not just hear her singles but buy her album.

BartholinsSister · 23/11/2015 11:18

That's successful marketing for you.

LovelyFriend · 23/11/2015 11:25

if it was as simple as successful marketing there would be lots of albums selling like this. Every month/week.

Learningtoletgo · 23/11/2015 11:27

Sorry to bang on about Amy Winehouse, but had her 'back to black album on very loud in the house this morning whilst I was tidying up (love her vocals). Anyway her 'love is a losing game' (demo version) came on and I swear it was like she was singing right in the next room! Made the hairs in the back of my neck stand up. If you haven't heard it I would definitely recommend it. Demo version not the polished article. Wow just wow.

NoahVale · 23/11/2015 12:05

love that song anyway.
amy winehouse led the way, this time round
