I'm always a bit meh Confused

I don't think her voice is anywhere near as amazing as a lot of the 'great' female singers that we've had.

I love some of her songs and am ambivalent about others.

Am I missing something?

Lollipopgirl8 · 21/11/2015 07:18

Her voice live was surprising definitely overrated vocals

BestIsWest · 21/11/2015 07:22

She just shouts doesn't she. I've never been a fan of yodellers. She's got one or two good tunes but that's it.

elizadolittlechoc · 21/11/2015 07:44

Enjoyed the show last night. We had a heated family debate Gogglebox style as to whether she was lip-syncing. Hiding behind mic, careful camera editing. Hope to be proved wrong. Loved her explanation of 'feeding' for not attending after-parties. For those who don't like her voice, it's a dream compared to Sam Smith's droney non-consonant drawling which makes me shout 'ANNUNCIATE!' At the radio.

AGreatBigWorld · 21/11/2015 07:57

I said to my boyfriend that whenever Adele writes a song the new girlfriends of her ex partners must quake in their boots as she rakes over their past relationships!!! Hmm

Wolpertinger · 21/11/2015 08:01

Her voice is technically awful which is why when she first got famous she had to take time out as she was damaging her voice. It's a bit better now but still grim.

Allofaflumble · 21/11/2015 09:03

Both Adele and Beyonce have me switching the radio off. Their voices hurt my ears, especially Beyonce.

I hate the new song by Adele
Such a dirge! Running by Beyonce is a good song utterly ruined by her flat vocals.

Someone else could have made it a great song.

Cocolepew · 21/11/2015 09:09

She has the ability to shout and mumble at the same time, she needs to listen to Streisand and learn how to sing so we can actually hear whats shes saying. Massively overrated.
So is Sam Smith.
And Beyonce.
Grin

BalthazarImpresario · 21/11/2015 09:16

She's awful and all the songs are boring.
Wait until the brit awards, she and that other beige nonentity Sam Smith will fucking duet and it will be everywhere.

She'll announce then cancel another tour because her voice just isn't strong enough to sing like that all the time. I imagine he normal singing voice is pretty awful.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 21/11/2015 09:16

Very limited range, not a pleasant-sounding tone, and no dynamics. Totally x-factor. People applaud shouting and reaching notes a semi-tone higher; there's no skill in being able to sing three notes at loud volume. Dusty Springfield knocks socks off her.

Tinklewinkle · 21/11/2015 09:20

I don't like her either. I always think I must be missing something though, when Hello came out, all my FB friends were posting how much they loved it. Lots of people "in floods of tears" over it. I just think it's crap.

I don't like her voice, she just seems to shout and I find her songs so boring

As for Ellie Goulding, she sounds like Donald Duck to me

ouryve · 21/11/2015 09:44

Just a quick scan of the mercury prize nominees from last night illustrates that there is far superior and much more original talent out there. They're just not all so prime time TV and radio 2 friendly.

It was the preponderance of excruciating ballads that put me off radio 2 for good.

Sallyingforth · 21/11/2015 09:55

When you've heard one of her songs you've heard them all. I certainly couldn't listen to her voice for a whole show or album. She has a great promotion and management team though.

As said above, she's not a patch on Dusty Springfield.

stardusty5 · 21/11/2015 09:59

I really like her. I agree that the Saviour Of Music stuff from the media is too much though and it's no wonder that it irritates some people.

Her albums are brilliant and her voice is beautiful. I like that she doesn't promote herself constantly between albums.

Really enjoyed the programme last night

ShebaShimmyShake · 21/11/2015 10:00

Great voice, lovely person, middle of the road, run-of-the-mill songs I can never remember or recognise. I don't get it either, but she makes a lot of people happy and she seems like a nice lady.

Allgunsblazing · 21/11/2015 10:05

I really like her voice and her songs are touching a cord with me. You don't have to agree with me, just like I don't agree with you. A quick: not for me, thanks, would have probably sufficed. We are, after all, adults.

thebestfurchinchilla · 21/11/2015 10:06

I quite like the album 21. She's good. BUT I hate the way this country latches onto to someone and holds them up as 'legends.' They did the same to Ed Sheeran. I hate that, assuming everyone likes the same style of music. I love Elbow and they are a really accomplished band but they hardly get any coverage. Of course to someone else they are crap, that's called personal taste, something that the media seems to have forgotten. I mean, how the hell does the fact that Adele had released a new album become an item on the news?

thebestfurchinchilla · 21/11/2015 10:09

Adele imho is not a patch on Alison Moyet, another big voice, similar accent. Although I preferred her Yazoo days -showing my age now-- Check out 'Don't Go'

Tinklewinkle · 21/11/2015 10:14

I saw Alison Moyet a couple of years ago and she was fab.

Huge voice, but it sounded amazing, whereas Adele just sounds like she's shouting iyswim

iklboo · 21/11/2015 10:25

Much fun can be had by making up your own words to I Wasn't Expecting That:

I was eating spaghetti
Got attacked by a yeti
I wasn't expecting that

And so on........

munkisocks · 21/11/2015 10:28

I quite like Adele tbh as a voice but some of her recent songs are so boring such Skyfall "Scaffold" and this "hello" song.

LovelyFriend · 21/11/2015 10:42

Wow a whole thread devoted to slagging off the most successful female UK artist of our time. Lovely Confused

And someone who is still a young woman and mother too. And who has quite successfully maintained a private life fairly out of the spotlight. Bravo!

I'm cheering her on. I don't own any of her albums. I quite like her songs and voice but I don't have to listen to her.

Why not listen to all these many other talented artists instead of focusing negativity of Adele, jeering her for what she is not?

There are many factors to the making of an international superstar. Talent is just one. Personally, decision making, self esteem, hard work and a huge amount of luck are often factors too. A lot of people clearly love her work and good for them. And good for us too. She's a great British export.

Sparklingbrook · 21/11/2015 10:44

Is she really 'the most successful female UK artist of our time'? Blimey.

hiddenhome2 · 21/11/2015 10:46

The singers from the past were much better. They had genuine talent.

Adele is just mainstream meh. Just another shouty gal. You've heard one, you've heard them all.

Alison Moyet is great.

LovelyFriend · 21/11/2015 10:47

Well I'm still in bed Smile but I doubt there is anyone in the last 10 years to rival her. Amy Winehouse would have given her a good run if she hadn't sadly self destructed.
