I'm always a bit meh Confused

I don't think her voice is anywhere near as amazing as a lot of the 'great' female singers that we've had.

I love some of her songs and am ambivalent about others.

Am I missing something?

most successful female UK artist of our time

Do you mean financially successful? I think people are discussing her voice and whether they like her songs. Nobody has said she cant make money and whine about paying her taxes. There are different ways of being successful.

Want2bSupermum · 21/11/2015 10:51

Probably she is the most successful female british export. It could have been Amy Winehouse if she had not had the addiction problems.

Adele and Ed Sheeran are both top of the pile here in the US. They are killing it. Ellie Goilding is doing well here on the east coast.

CoteDAzur · 21/11/2015 10:52

YANBU. Adele's songs are shouty and basically a rehash of the same song. I'm totally with you on "Syfaaaaawwwwl".

She is the Chris Martin of pop - nothing much that is interesting, basically lift music with some whiny shouting thrown in.

LovelyFriend, Christmas 2015 on MN is sponsored by a slagging off of Adele.

I think she's quite talented but it's not my sort of music so I don't tend to listen to her. Same as I don't watch certain programmes or read certain books. However, falling over yourself to proclaim you despise her, to criticise her weight, insult the people who do like her (usually by implying that you don't understand real music) and just being insulting in general, seems to be the way we're celebrating the festive season this year.

It's really bloody unkind.

Is there a problem with noting you don't like a certain singer's music and commenting on how you think it's marketed? Probably not at all. Thread after thread of insults, comments and rehashing of the same cruel taunts isn't very pleasant at all.

XiCi · 21/11/2015 10:54

Who actually buys Adele's music? I just can't work out who her target audience is or why anyone would buy it. Every song is a dirge along the same theme. An "I'm going to relentlessly stalk my ex boyfriend even though he's moved on' theme. Awful.

Agree with the poster liking fka Twigs. She is amazing. Her performance at the MOBOs was just mesmerising.

ssd · 21/11/2015 10:58

I think she's got a really beautiful voice, I dont like the song skyfall but thats not her fault.

I loved the bit on Adele at the BBC where she poses as an Adele impersonator, that was really lovely to watch.

ssd · 21/11/2015 10:59

and she's a very beautiful girl, gorgeous face and coloring.

LovelyFriend · 21/11/2015 10:59

I've just googled lots of "top female singers of all time" etc lists are articles.

Adele is always much higher than the Spice Girls (5 of them and they didn't write). Annie Lennox on one list - respect. No other UK female singers. Didn't see Amy Winehouse anywhere.

So yes I'm pretty confident Adele is the most successful UK female art of our time.

And she writes too!

LovelyFriend · 21/11/2015 11:01

Rax Indeed!

LimboNovember · 21/11/2015 11:07

I have to say missed Adel first time round when the hoo ha started. I liked her Rolling in deep song, and got the album and it was so depressing.

However I really really like her new song - Hello.

I think its genius actually! Liked some of the other songs too.
It interesting to me, that her new album resonates with me and my life and yet, she is a mega rich singing super star!

I am not a fan of dido at all, I think adel is certainly in a different league there.

LimboNovember · 21/11/2015 11:07

I also really love Skyfall...it has all major components of a Bond song.

LimboNovember · 21/11/2015 11:08

does anyone know who this man is!

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 21/11/2015 11:08

I think she has a great voice as in it's a very well trained voice

For me it's lacks depth and emotion. Technically she may have a better voice than what Amy Winehouse had but its emotionless in comparison. Amy's voice and her telling of a story in a song is something that Adele doesn't do

Like Whitney Houston brilliant voice but lacked the feeling and emotion that many singers with less powerful voices do. Though she was much better in concert

Sparklingbrook · 21/11/2015 11:10

How can she be higher than Annie Lennox? I will have to do some googling.

LimboNovember · 21/11/2015 11:10

For me it's lacks depth and emotion

Thats interesting because from her songs last night, I thought she showed tremendous depth of feeling. Particularly the song about taking the photo at the end.

I thought this really showed when she was in the Adele look alike line up. As soon as she sang she stood out, for the emotion. For me.

Bragadocia · 21/11/2015 11:14

I acknowledge that she's good at what she does, but I really don't understand the mega fuss either. Good voice, song very good songs, some okay songs, but the fanfare about her mystifies me. That 'Hello' song sounds like a Eurovision entry to me (a winning entry, but Eurovision none the less).

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 21/11/2015 11:16

When she is feeling emotional or that is what she if trying to get across the louder her singing

Listen to Amy Winehouse or Billie Holiday or Frank Sinatra all great at telling their story BH and FS very rarely used the strength of their voice by belting out their feelings they stayed with how they felt rather than how well they could sing the song

slithytove · 21/11/2015 11:17

I like Adele and her music

CalleighDoodle · 21/11/2015 11:18

On the releasenof her last song i really wanted to say, and also proving i spend far too long on here, that maybe she needs a bit of counselling and to do the freedom programme.

Cocolepew · 21/11/2015 11:47

I never got the Amy adoration either, her singing voice sounded put on.
The Spice Girls were incredibly popular but still talentless.
The charts have always had shite in it because everyone has different tastes.
Just because Adele is a woman it doesn't mean we can't dicuss whether we like her or not.

My pregnancy hormones caused me to cry over I wasn't expecting that (the end bit where she dies). How embarrassing.

SurlyCue · 21/11/2015 11:55

I cant hear "wasnt expecting that" without expecting him to start saying "i'm luke, i'm 5 and my dad's bruce lee" Grin it really ruins a lovely song for me but i cant get past it.
