I'm always a bit meh Confused

I don't think her voice is anywhere near as amazing as a lot of the 'great' female singers that we've had.

I love some of her songs and am ambivalent about others.

Am I missing something?

I agree with you. I like Adele, she has a lovely voice and I like her songs but I don't get the WOW factor. I was listening to Heart on the radio yesterday and people had stayed up until midnight specifically to download her new album as apparently it couldn't wait a moment longer and I though; "really"??

molyholy · 21/11/2015 12:03

Read a fine review of adeles new album by someone in the guardian. It said something along the lines of it's 5 years later and she is still metaphorically crying on her ex boyfriends front lawn, throwing her shoes at his window. I think they nailed it.

Timri · 21/11/2015 12:11

What's wrong with her speaking voice Hmm

NutCrackerSlacker · 21/11/2015 12:17

She has a nice voice, but its not my particular cup of tea. it doesn't send tingles down my spine like some singers are capable of doing.

Her songs are pure MOR to me. I prefer something much, much more genuinely soulful.

She seems like a nice gal, though - got her head screwed on, funny and down to earth - and has some discernible talent, unlike so many of her counterparts in the charts - so fair play to her, I say.

lifeinslowmotion · 21/11/2015 12:19

She has a good voice, but nothing amazing in my opinion and once you've heard one of her songs you've heard them all. Certainly couldn't listen to her songs one after the other. I have no strong feelings either way.

cluecu · 21/11/2015 12:23

Since starting this thread the neighbours have been playing her new album at full blast Grin

She must have spies Hmm

I don't think the way she speaks/how much she weighs is relevant. She isn't my cup of tea but she is to others music is very personal.

iklboo · 21/11/2015 13:04

Surly - I thought it was just me! Grin
I loved that song.

BaronessSamedi · 21/11/2015 13:38

YANBU.
her music is not my cup of tea at all.
all this "i've loved and lost before" guff.
can't be doing with any of it.
some people just lap it up though, so good luck to them.

Scoobydoo8 · 21/11/2015 13:40

She writes her own songs - that's the difference with most performers.

Want2bSupermum · 21/11/2015 14:01

Annie Lennox was in a band and not a solo artist until the end. I love it when they play sweet dreams on the radio (about 2-3 times a week!).

To give context to Adele and Ed Sheerans success here in the US, Adele released Hello and it became the number one single for the year in 3 days and no one is expected to out sell her. Ed sheeran, if you include all his singles for the year does outsell Adele but he releases a lot more.

There hasn't been a Female British artist to release three successive hit albums in a row in a very long time. Adele has achieved that. Dido had one hit album, the others tanked. Annie Lennox also had one huge album as a solo artist but couldn't get 3 in a row.

hiddenhome2 · 21/11/2015 14:10

It's no good writing your own songs if they're all the same though is it?

BumpTheElephant · 21/11/2015 14:14

Lots of people obviously think she's amazing! My DH likes her songs and her voice. I can't stand listening to her, her voice is really unpleasant to me but each to their own.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 21/11/2015 14:18

It's the same bloody album, just with a different number on the front

BumpTheElephant · 21/11/2015 14:18

Just to clarify, I don't mind her speaking voice, it's her singing I can't stand but as she's extremely successful I'm clearly in the minority!

iklboo · 21/11/2015 14:18

We sing along to Skyfall in a mockney accent:

We got trifle
And apple crumble
Have it all
Or have it together

DickDewy · 21/11/2015 14:19

I can't be doing with Adele.

I switch stations if she comes on the radio.

Sparklingbrook · 21/11/2015 14:19

You can't beat a bit of 'crumbole'. Grin

KittyVonCatsworth · 21/11/2015 14:24

Every time I hear her I want to rip through my chest cavity, pull out my joyous heart and my infested lungs and shove them down her fecking throat because it's got to be less painful than shoving hot skewers in my fecking ears ever time I have to hear her whiny, monotonous tones.

I also hate Chris Martin. But even more so. He gives me Tourette's.

laffymeal · 21/11/2015 14:28

I think her voice is totally devoid of melody and real emotion. She's like a construct of a marketing man's idea of what would sell shedloads.

NewLife4Me · 21/11/2015 14:29

YABU, because you say that technically her voice is good.
Actually it is really bad in the technical way. She can't enunciate, breathe control is appalling, hence the voice isn't supported. That comes from a none expert, so lord knows what an expert would make of her technical ability.

However, people tend to like her and she has made a lot of money the same as others who are technically bad. good for her I suppose.

thornrose · 21/11/2015 14:34

I love her voice, and her songs. She looks bloody gorgeous in the Hello video (irrelevant!)

This feels a bit like the inevitable backlash, the build them up, knock them down thing that happens to a lot of successful artists.

I also love Sam Smith. Some people think that if you enjoy mainstream music you are somehow lacking in taste/knowledge.

I have eclectic taste, I love loads of stuff.

KittyVonCatsworth · 21/11/2015 14:35

She sings through her nose. I think if I was ever to do karaoke, I could do her (not in the carnal sense) very well.

Nnnnnwen nyaaaaa skyfnaaaaaaallls

I'm actually trying to spell this whilst singing and my DH thinks I'm nuts. Thanks a fucking lot Adele.

absolutelynotfabulous · 21/11/2015 14:45

I'm no expert either, but if she insists on singing in Mockney she should avoid the " crumbawwwwwwl" -type words as they are just not going to work. This, to me, is a sign of her lack of awareness as a songwriter, and as a singer.

She's bland, has mass appeal and is successful but imho owes more to skilful musical arrangement combined with good marketing rather any spectacular talent.

She's a bit meh to me.

BoogleMcGroogle · 21/11/2015 14:51

I watched the programme last night as I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Okay songs, nice voice ( in my view, agree about the weird accent)c

In short, no Joni Mitchell.
