to think Mumsnet should delete posts in which women are called cis

violetsarentblue · 17/11/2015 22:21

I (and I imagine quite a lot of women on here) are fed up with being referred to as cis. I find the term deeply insulting.
I'm a woman and prefer to be addressed as a 'woman', not a cis woman.

I noticed MN are quick to delete posts where transgender people are called 'he' instead of 'she', because that group of people find the term insulting and MN don't want to offend.

Generally we delete posts in which people persistently refuse to refer to people by the pronoun (he/she; him/her) by which they’ve asked to be referred, out of respect for that individual’s wishes.

Please - could we have the same depth of consideration for our wishes?

Thank you.

Gaah. Lost my post.

ishoes I don't see the relevance of your link? Sadly many, many people commit suicide in prison. Evidently the support and rehabilitation is just not adequate, especially for those with mental health issues. The case you cite was a tragic case, but I don't think their death was because they were in a male prison.

isshoes · 23/11/2015 19:59

So women should have to share prison spaces with men just to stop those men committing suicide?

??

Alis - if that's true then someone needs to tell all of the sex reassignment surgeons ASAP.

*Far easier, and far more sensible to segregate by sex rather than gender in pretty much all cases.

Except it isn't.*

The Vicky Thompson case is not a strong argument for putting biological males in prison with females. Men kill themselves in prison for all sorts of reasons - forcing women to share with them isn't the solution.

VestalVirgin · 23/11/2015 20:07

Those surgeons are completely aware that they cannot change someone's sex.
If someone can pass medicine exams without knowing that humans cannot change sex, then I would be rather worried about the state of healthcare in this country.

It's Gender Reassigment Surgery.

HTH.

OneMoreCasualty · 23/11/2015 20:12

There were 84 suicides in prison in 2014.

"A Guardian investigation also identified distinct themes in many of the self-inflicted deaths, including failures in the assessment of risk in the face of obvious warning signs, a lack of training for prison staff, inadequate monitoring once risk was identified and insufficient communication with families."

isshoes · 23/11/2015 20:12

Thanks for the lessons guys but I think you'll find it's also commonly known as sex reassignment surgery.

OK slugs I wasn't evading your questions, I'm making dinner. If you really want me to explain it all to you I will shortly.

What is a woman? How do you identify as a woman? ( I'm assuming you are a woman or transwoman)

OneMoreCasualty · 23/11/2015 20:15

Covering a slightly different time period, 97% were men and 3% women; young adults (18-24) were especially vulnerable - Vicky was in this age group

www.theguardian.com/society/2014/oct/17/-sp-inmate-suicide-figures-reveal-human-toll-prison-crisis

OneMoreCasualty · 23/11/2015 20:18

There are 85,977 men and 3,935 women in jail at present, with an estimate of 80 transgender people.

OneMoreCasualty · 23/11/2015 20:20

So around 92% of prisoners are male, and the suicide rate is slightly disproportionately bigger for male prisoners.

almondpudding · 23/11/2015 20:24

Nobody actually believes it is possible to change sex, particularly the medical profession are aware that is impossible.

I think we're just getting into the realm of utter fantasy now.

venusinscorpio · 23/11/2015 20:26

You can't say that, how transphobic! Don't worry almond, isshoes is going to explain it all to us after dinner.

Alisvolatpropiis · 23/11/2015 20:27

isshoes

I think you'll find what the average pleb on the street calls it doesn't make it correct medical terminology.

Gosh, some of the attitudes on this thread make my skin crawl. As far as I am concerned, a transgender woman is just that. Transgender and a woman. I wish people would just show a little compassion.

venusinscorpio · 23/11/2015 20:54

Where is the compassion for female rape, DV or sexual abuse victims who don't want to share a prison cell with a biological man? It seems to be in rather short supply among the transrighteous.

VestalVirgin · 23/11/2015 20:55

I wish people would just show a little compassion.

I wish people would show just as much compassion to actual women as they do to all kinds of males.

venusinscorpio · 23/11/2015 21:06

Where is the outcry and "compassion" when transactivists shriek "transphobia" at people who use the term FGM? Do you think it is really the main takeaway issue when talking about little girls being carved up in a mud hut without sanitation or anaesthetic to satisfy a patriarchal tradition based around yes, gender? Or do you, like me, think people who would say so, definitely need to have a little bit of a word with themselves about their own privilege and try not to be quite so narcissistically self-absorbed? Why don't you say so? Or are you scared you'll lose your "liberal" card?

isshoes · 23/11/2015 21:06

slugs - the answer to your question about the body builder is that there is any number of different ways in which people may choose to live with their gender identity. Some will never go for any sort of surgery. That is why matters such as prison assignment are complex and need to be looked at on a case by case basis. Not everything fits into a neat little box.

Have a look at this article: www.genderspectrum.org/quick-links/understanding-gender/

It also explains how people can surgically change their sex to match their gender identity.

isshoes · 23/11/2015 21:08

'when transactivists shriek "transphobia" at people who use the term FGM?'

Again, where has this happened? Show me the thread.

VestalVirgin · 23/11/2015 21:09

Not everything fits into a neat little box.

Then why are you such a staunch defender of gender, a system designed to put people into neat little boxes?
