To think that this is out of order, and there's no shame in being cis

NC as potentially outing.

DD is 17 and gay. She's very active in local LGBT societies and organisations and has campaigned against homophobic bullying in her school. Today she received this email from one of the organisations she's involved with, publicising an event for trans writers.

What's wrong with being cis ffs?! DD has herself been on the receiving end of abuse in the past for being 'transphobic', simply because she's challenged the anti cis opinion which she encounters regularly. This despite the fact that she campaigns for equality and has done since she came out aged 14. She's seriously considering giving up the work she does with various groups because of this attitude, which is all too common. She's even received death threats on Twitter because she's 'evil' enough to think that equality should be just that, and everyone should simply respect everyone else.

I'm livid, she's livid, are we BU?

they believe womanhood is not defined by biology but by 'a feeling of gender'

I don't mean to 'other' or be transphobic but is this what it comes down to?

Imustgodowntotheseaagain · 17/11/2015 22:41

baby, as I understand it, transvestitism is a sexual fetish; transgenderism is not,

HedgehogsDontBite · 17/11/2015 22:41

I can't bear the word cis, it's worse than gusset!

But not as bad as 'fish'.

Thank you Imust, that makes sense. :)

Baby - trans is an umbrella term which includes - amongst others - transgender (someone who sees themself as a different gender to their biological sex) and transvestite / cross-dresser (someone who likes to dress in clothing that is typically assigned to another gender). If you watch Eastenders, Les is a cross-dresser, the new character is transgender.

*Citing statistics is transphobic

If the statistics are being misused and are misleading.

You do know that people use statistics in a way to suit them and their agenda?*

Forgive me, I haven't followed all of the threads covering this topic on MN...which false statistics precisely are you referring to? Did you challenge the poster about the statistics quoted? Are they actually being misused, or do you simply disagree with their findings? (two very different things).

IT IS NOT CIS!!!! Fucking bullshit. A label is not necessary for people that are perfectly fine with how they were born! Honestly, who the fuck came up with this shit? Why can't you be a WOMAN or a MAN without a twatting label regarding how you got there?!

I second a separate topic. Not least because I think I'm spectacularly thick when it comes to this topic. It actually hurts my brain trying to understand cis, non cis, terf et al. I do try honestly but even after I've read all the differently worded explanations, I've tied myself in knots and am still non the wiser Blush

Fintan · 17/11/2015 23:00

But people have strong opinions and see what they want to see

Including seeing transphobia when it isn't there.

'If a woman says she sees sexism, people believe her'.

No they don't.

Floggingmolly · 17/11/2015 23:09

80% of trans women retain a penis through choice Confused.

I simply cannot take the assertion that they are women, and must be recognised as women, while they choose to retain the very essence of what makes them (biologically) a man seriously...

Who decides that words suddenly have new meanings? You can't just decide that "woman" doesn't mean "woman" any more or "phobia" doesn't mean "phobia".

I hate this "cis" "terf" "transphobic" nonsense, all this neatly boxing in and labelling of people. But what I really hate is the whole dodgy 1984 thoughcrimesque nonsense that is trotted out when anyone declares a dissenting opinion to the brave new orthodoxy.

There you go another word redefined, "hate speech" now means "having a differing opinion whilst not actually hating or discriminating against anyone".

ShortcutButton · 17/11/2015 23:13

Because transphobia is defined differently to other phobias

No one here hates trans people, or is scared of them, or thinks theyy are not equal people.

Everyone on every thread has expressed that they understand that life must be hard as a TG person and believe that TG people should be able to live a life free of viol3nce and persecution; have equal employment opportunities etc; which is what black and womens activizts have campaigned for for centuries and contradiction of this for black people or women is often what we are talking about when we talk of racism and sexism

What a number of uß wont do iz accept mtf people as women, in female only spaces/sports etc. That is because of the detrimental affect for women. And that oß what you refer to when you talk of transphobia on MN

Floggingmolly · 17/11/2015 23:14

Mind you, I struggle with the concept of a man who doesn't feel like a man; (which I can get, at least in theory) deciding he feels like a woman. Really? Based on what?
