My health visitor can out to see me after my 2 year old son have a temperature and rash had a A&E visit over it she was saying you have to put cold water in the bath 1st or he will be burned and drown my son is not left in the bathroom alone she was very ignorant and was basically telling me how to safeguard my son in the bathroom my son has 3 different types of eczema and have had this since birth has been to see a skin specialist about this she was Intent on making me see a different specialist she even made appointments for me to see my GP my GP said my son does not need any skin specialist she left a voicemail on my phone for me to call her when I called her she was telling me I have to safeguard the outside of the property that I'm living in in this she told me I had to get a cage that attaches to my front door so my 2 year old son can go outside and play I was told buy her to leave my son unattended outside in a cage I would never leave my child unattended at any point been outside and is watching when in the bath has anyone got any advice on this matter as I'm not a stupid person that would leave a 2 year old in a cage outside but there are young mums out there that could possibly take notice to what thishealth visitor has told me

Miscommunication! A word meaning something slightly different as they don't understand the context. Or mishearing, or not understanding what the person was actually talking about at all.

It started off as a cage then it was the HV "saying more or less" a "pen type/cage".
Clear as mud.

And I for one think that Paul was trying to do you a favour.

"Cage" is usually used when talking about animals rather than children, so I think posters thinking the HV meant a crate for the dog is understandable.

But when we used a playpen for DS2, we did tend to call it "the baby cage" (although we always kept it inside the house), so maybe the HV is also used to referring to playpen as cages when talking to family / friends and forgot to use the proper word in the voicemail.

Silently Quite simply because "cage" is exactly what words like crate and pen might translate as.

Earlier on someone asked whether the HV was a non-native English speaker. The OP hasn't said either way. But if she is, that might also suggest a simple 'lost in translation' explanation.

Do you think she might have meant a safety gate and you perhaps got the wrong end of the stick?

I want to know how the HV left you a voicemail without ringing your phone?

I imagine the OP meant she left a message and didn't try to ensure she spoke to her directly.

OP - do you think your HV is a native English speaker, or could it be that she is the one mistranslating words?

Caz has said repeatedly that the HV used the word 'cage', she really couldn't have been any clearer. It's the job of the HV to ensure that her advice has been understood and it's normal practice to get the client to repeat back their understanding of any advice given. The HV has either told Caz that she should leave her son outside alone or, just as bad, sent her away the impression she should.

Even if English was Caz' forth language and the HV's sixth, there has clearly been a breakdown in communication here and that's the HV's fault.

So she did ring your phone, you were just on it at the time.
I find it hard to believe that any HV suggested you should get a product that AFAIK doesn't even exist. I think you misunderstood.

I really think this sounds like a misunderstanding between two people, at least one of whom is not communicating very clearly in English.

That's not a criticism of people's ability to speak English, just a possible explnation.

ConstanceMarkYaBitch you are missing understanding read it from the start I know what I was told, I asked her 3 times what she said and she said cage that attaches to the front door so my son can go outside while I am inside the reason I asked her 3 times was because I didn't believe what I heard

Just to inform you: Russian, Ukrainian, Estonian, and Finnish languages all have punctuation and paragraphs. I know two of them very well and others two are similar to the ones I know.
I'm sure Japanese and Arabic don't have punctuation though.

As for the HV - I think she meant a safety gate. They could sound similar or she could just use wrong word by mistake. I do that occasionally in my all 3 languages and not always realise straightaway what I said.

I am curious though whether I'm right. Please update us on the matter, OP.

Either this is a huge miscommunication or your health visitor is totally insane!

To be fair, a lot of health visitors are completely insane.
