To be disturbed by the "Prepping" board.

Is this a thing now?

Is there really a need to be stockpiling food, medicines and creating a bolt hole?

Am i missing something? Seriously (this is not a light-hearted thread), i suffer from anxiety and this is really disturbing me.

Hopefully people have just been watching too much walking dead.

Those spending a fortune could sell their pretty things and donate the money to a food bank.

Equally, those hoarding food could donate it to a food bank instead.

CheerfulYank · 07/11/2015 22:03

I'm American so peppers don't bother me, I'm used to them :o

My brother in law has a room of guns so if shit goes down, I'm headed there first.

I can't imagine what kind of shit would go down, however...

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 07/11/2015 22:04

I don't understand why anyone would be anxious or upset at the prepping board and in all honesty, if the notion of random strangers hoarding water and baked beans gives you the fear, you need to get a grip.

Hey Mother that is REALLY rude.

OP clearly specified that it was the EXTREME prepping she found a bit alarming.

Nobody has expressed alarm at having supplies in for a powercut or heavy snowfall.

OP ALSO said quite clearly that she has anxiety issues. Telling her to 'get a grip' is more than a bit off.

DontHaveAUsername · 07/11/2015 22:04

Why should peppers donate money to a food bank? That's taking food out of their own mouths if they ever need it. It's like saying that if there's no food and neighbours are starving, the one pepper who has weeks of supplies should just dole it out to the others so they can eek out a few more days before dying.

Re the quoting someone in bold thing and then replying thing that is driving me nuts

I joined in 2006. I've had a look at the threads I'm on in my pre-Mintyy incarnation and I did not see one instance of this. Am happy to link the search if anyone disbelieves me.

If people feel the need to prep for something or other, then so be it afaic.

Definitely don't think it needs a whole new fucking topic though! As I said before, surely there is nothing that can't be covered in one thread?

CrohnicallyAspie · 07/11/2015 22:05

What does OFRS stand for? It's appeared a few times on this thread and I can't work it out!

Pipbin · 07/11/2015 22:06

And who honestly doesn't have a couple of days worth of food in the cupboard? I get a delivery once a week and don't often need to do a top up shop.

CakeNinja · 07/11/2015 22:07

Bah, it just looks like a board for extreme hoarders.
It baffles me.
If there was a family who kept themselves to themselves during a seriously dire crisis, I'd suspect they had better supplies than me (definitely, I don't do 'prepping') and dp would probably go and hold them at gunpoint for their supplies!
Obviously we aren't mass murderers, but when it comes to it, i reckon we would get nasty, and no amount of batteries and generators would stop an ambush of 20 people from just charging in and taking what they wanted.
There is one poster who is quite prolific in posting they wouldn't share their stuff, and for good reason if they've done all the hoarding, but they would be easily overthrown as being in the suspected minority, one whiff and they'd be done for.

I think the preppers are scare mongering to give themselves a reason to hoard. Nothing wrong with that if you enjoy it. But it really doesn't give you immunity to desperate people who would join forces and destroy you!

Oh fuck of ruck sack

Thank you!

Armi · 07/11/2015 22:09

I find it terribly anxiety-inducing but useful to a certain extent. I now have matches, candles and have discussed installing a wood burner with DH. I don't go down the foaming and twitching and barricading the door against neighbours short of UHT milk stuff, but am starting to think what would happen if we were cut off by snow and experienced a power cut. We're very rural and only have gas central heating which requires electricity to work. I bought stuff for the freezer then realised this would be useless after 48 hours and we'd have no cooking facilities anyway.

We'd be stuffed really. DH just shrugs but it does worry me a little. I suppose we could sit in the car and run the engine for warmth then pile into bed with the dog. We could live on cornflakes and cold beans. And brandy.

gamerchick · 07/11/2015 22:09

And that was my response to exactly that statement.

Food comes in whether you stockpile or not. Whether a 1000 quid + bag would calm your hunger pangs down remains to be seen.

If we all lost our jobs I'm sure I would rather have a few months worth of food in he house than have the stress of selling something in time to feed my kids. It removes stress quite a bit.

However I don't give a toss if people prepare or not, spend silly money on stuff or not. Own your own shit.

HackerFucker22 · 07/11/2015 22:10

I wouldn't survive the week!!! Although I do have 4 bottles of Baileys.... and wine!!

howtorebuild · 07/11/2015 22:10

Ninja sounds scary.

bigkidsdidit · 07/11/2015 22:10

Keeping candles and a few days of food on the house is one thing - perfectly normal and sensible in case of power cuts etc.

That's not 'prepping' is it? People on the prepping board are discussing buying 20L water containers on Amazon and stockpiling antibiotics

headexplodesbodyfreezes · 07/11/2015 22:11

Where would you go with the OFRS?

Palomb · 07/11/2015 22:11

I could live for a months just on the food I've got shoved in cupboards in the kitchen.

Wrt prepping. My house is to small to prep - I'd rather live comfortably in the now than inconvenience myself because of what might never be.

Who actually has prep room? I don't even have enough living room!

Bassetfeet · 07/11/2015 22:13

It helps my anxiety . Don't give headroom to nuclear war/zombie stuff though . Nothing will help then .
Just make sure you have supplies of essentials .......food ,water ,light and your meds [withdrawal isn't nice for some drugs and analgesia is a must for so many people ]. Just common sense for lots of scenarios that are maybe likely re weather ,ATMs going down etc .

My son was not impressed with my cupboard of doom . More tins of Pedigree Chum than soup . Ah well . My cupboard .........my priorities Wink.

headexplodesbodyfreezes · 07/11/2015 22:13

It would have to be a massive OFRS to carry all the stockpiled stuff. More of an OFHGV in fact.

gamerchick · 07/11/2015 22:14

Heh cakeninja it baffles you but your plan is to go out and take by force what you need instead? Rightio then Grin

DontHaveAUsername · 07/11/2015 22:16

"If there was a family who kept themselves to themselves during a seriously dire crisis, I'd suspect they had better supplies than me (definitely, I don't do 'prepping') and dp would probably go and hold them at gunpoint for their supplies!"

It's this attitude that makes me simply not speak about it to others any more. You sound entitled, you don't see any need to prep but you'll happily steal from those who have in a crisis. Surely the better more humane and civilized thing to do would be start prepping yourself, that way if there's a crisis you can rely on your own preps, and not loot from/murder innocent people?

RollingRollingRolling · 07/11/2015 22:17

I don't have pets, can I complain about the doghouse/fishnet etc? Im not a cyclist, the cycling board disturbs me.
Oh wait, I just don't click on threads that aren't relevant to me.
