Is this a thing now?

Is there really a need to be stockpiling food, medicines and creating a bolt hole?

Am i missing something? Seriously (this is not a light-hearted thread), i suffer from anxiety and this is really disturbing me.

Hopefully people have just been watching too much walking dead.

Oh I thought a lot of it was tongue in cheek. Like the FoI request about zombies that was made to Sheffield council a while ago.

TheoriginalLEM · 07/11/2015 21:36

mintyy i get that. i really do. totally sensible but these people are taking it to extremes.

I always thought the OFRS thing was light-heated too - I'm off for a read of the the Preppers threads.

OP - don't take any notice. Seriously.

On YT there is some serious Prepper's stuff - I find it fascinating, but also very disturbing too. In a way, I think some of the serious preppers in the US almost want some sort of armageddon to happen just so they can use all their stuff!

Plus - if you ever watched 'When the lights went out' on C4 - the prepper who got the generator was targeted by burglars etc. It's too scary to think about the consequences of having stuff that people want and need.

80sMum · 07/11/2015 21:38

I used to keep a couple of crates of canned food and bottled water in the house when we lived in California. It was advisable to do so, in case of a major earthquake.
I can't think why anyone would feel the need to do this in the UK though.

Where is this thread?!

Mintyy · 07/11/2015 21:41

Omg! I fucking HATE this new thing on Mumsnet of quoting someone in bold and then replying to it. It is driving me nuts. Why can't you just write "Minty, when you refer to your elderly in-laws I disagree because ..."

nightsky010 · 07/11/2015 21:41

Have I missed something?? I've not read the news in a couple of days, what exactly are we meant to be prepping for?! Terrorist attacks? Bad weather? Or are these people just batshit and worried about everything?

Last year in the crazy power cuts my procedure was:
Realise there was a power cut
Swear a lot
Trip over some things in the dark
More swearing
Realise the were 6 places candles could be found, which was it?
Eventually find and light candles
Eat a lot of sandwiches
Wear every item of clothing I owned all at once
Realise novelty of sandwiches and candles had worn off
Power came back on
.... And I'm still alive!

What prep could you need?? I admit it would have been quicker if I'd known where the candles were immediately, but really, people just manage in these situations.

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 07/11/2015 21:41

Yes they are Lem, I agree.

I've been snowed in a few times and had power cutss etc, so I'm quite organised about a well-stocked larder, calor gas stove, candles and so on. I don't consider that odd.

OTOH a bunch of people talking about acquiring smallholdings, hiding their stash from post-apocalyptic looters, moving further from the coast, electricity generation, self-sufficiency skills, food sources etc does read as quite unusual (to the point that I'd assumed most of the posters were sending the whole thing up).

Don't let it make you anxious. It's very-worst-case-scenario-imaginable thinking and not a popular view Flowers

DontHaveAUsername · 07/11/2015 21:42

Prepping isn't about apocalyptic scenarios, at least not for me, it's about preparing for more likely scenarios such as the power going off for a few days, or food deliveries not arriving for a while. There are loads of examples in this country where those things have happened so it's not paranoid to prepare for them.

For people who think it is weird to prep, I wondered many have home insurance? That is basically the same thing, taking preparations and precautions in case something bad happens.

LyndaNotLinda · 07/11/2015 21:42

I used to live in California. I never kept any supplies.

I'm with you LEM. It's a bit odd and I can't see why a) a board is needed or b) there's anything to talk about

Chippednailvarnish · 07/11/2015 21:43

Omg! I fucking HATE this new thing on Mumsnet of quoting someone in bold and then replying to it. It is driving me nuts

Because I don't give a shit what people thinkGrin

Erimemushinteperem · 07/11/2015 21:45

I hope it's not needed. As a family of 6 we only have enough space to store about 4 days food. I'm constantly at the shops. But honestly if the shit hit the fan I'd rather we went quickly.

SurferJet · 07/11/2015 21:45

I thought it was something to do with prep school - obviously not.

Seems a bit bonkers to me.

headexplodesbodyfreezes · 07/11/2015 21:45

I've been reading some of the threads. It really is very extreme Sad.

If it comes the kind of situation they are preparing for, I wouldn't want to survive anyway.

Why is it called prepping, what's wrong with preparing?

spankhurst · 07/11/2015 21:45

I find it all a bit strange. Having seen Threads and When the Wind Blows in my formative years, I view all nuclear war prepping as futile in the extreme.

Perfectly sensible to have some bottled water and tins in in case of heavy snow. Other than that the phrase 'pissing in the wind' springs to mind.

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 07/11/2015 21:45

It's a whole board Paul

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/preppers

winchester1 · 07/11/2015 21:46

Ok, I'm not.in the UK (mumsnet is not only UK people)
We do have long.term plans - ,well, forest/log burners, hunt etc etc

But that's not all its about I've learnt tips on electricity generation, which foods hold well, how much water I need, lots more

Yes we can speak to each other even with this type of thread but its basically bullying ti.keep saying preppers are crazy

SurlyCue · 07/11/2015 21:47

I fucking HATE this new thing on Mumsnet of quoting someone in bold and then replying to it.

Confused that is not new. Ive been here 7 years and it was happening then.

And Grin @ columbians!

DontHaveAUsername · 07/11/2015 21:48

The guys who say they wouldn't want to live through "it", why do you think we are solely preparing for an end of the world nightmare? Or are you saying you'd prefer dying to living through a short powercut?

I prep for situations like a powercut for a few days, or needing to evacuate the house for some reason. Both these things have either happened to me or people I know so I don't see it as unreasonable to prepare for it.

WhoisLucasHood · 07/11/2015 21:48

I find it fascinating. I just about manage to muddle through life, I love that some are prepared for every eventuality. I'm not, the zombies can take me first. I don't fancy living in a post apocalyptic world. I enjoy being a soft 21st century person who can't live without electricity without a day. If it happens, it happens, meh. I'll deal with that then. I'm still interested by the preppers who are ready for anything

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 07/11/2015 21:48

Omg! I fucking HATE this new thing on Mumsnet of quoting someone in bold and then replying to it. It is driving me nuts

New? I've been here more than 5 years and it's always been done in that time.

I like it; It really aids clarity on fast-moving or contentious threads.

(I do owe you an apology on another issue though Mintyy )

OfaFrenchmind2 · 07/11/2015 21:48

Hehe... :) I would like to be the cockroach kind of person, always surviving, even with boils all over my face and learning to eat insects and worms.
