To ask how often do you shower?

I was talking to a friend about hygiene etc an she seemed horrified that I only shower every other day.

She said that she showers morning and night every day. I don't even have time for that! Or enough bathrooms!! The kids get bathed in the nights that I don't shower and DP showers every night. I find that if I shower every single day, I get dry skin, same with the kids too. So am I really as scruffy, dirty and unhygienic as I now feel?

Twice a day, three if I'm going out after work, if I stay at home all day I don't bother showering until just before I go to bed though. I'm very sweaty, and I get smelly quite quickly, and I have terribly oily skin, which is a nightmare combination. Morning showers are my proper showers where I alternate washing my hair with giving my skin a good scrubbing, evening/after work ones are about five minutes long, just to freshen up.

CatMilkMan · 06/11/2015 23:10

Twice a day at least but I don't get dry skin because of it.

FunnysInLaJardin · 06/11/2015 23:11

Grin usual. me too. Nothing comes between me and a good scrub

Micah · 06/11/2015 23:19

I don't think it makes a difference how often you wash as to whether you smell.

I had a boyfriend who showered twice a day. He'd shower before work, but by 6pm would be starting to smell and have another. Office job, no physical.

On the other hand, I had a flat mate at uni who had a bath once a week (no shower). She didn't smell, at all, and I have a sensitive nose.

Bunbaker · 06/11/2015 23:20

nocakes at 41 it shouldn't be this bad. It might be worth getting checked out.

I'm clearly foul. I shower every other day. Share towels with DD randomly and only wash bed linen once a fortnight realistically it's once a month. I have NEVER washed my actual duvet and pillows (didn't even know this was a "thing"). I don't smell, I look nice and any more is unnecessary!

I would say after a long , hot sweaty commute (why do carriages get so overheated even in deep winter?) I need a daily bath or shower at night and a wash in the morning. I'd definitely be whiffy if i didnt. Do you at least wash the erm necessary 'bits' that get like that between times?

StampyMum · 06/11/2015 23:33

When I was young (and had greasy hair and oily skin) I did shower and hair every morning without fail. And again if I was going out in the evening. But now I'm a dried-up 40-something, I just don't need to so much. I probably bath or shower five or six times a week, hair two or three times. I almost never get an armpit smell. I live in northern climes, so summer is not really a thing, but in hot weather, yes, I do wash more often. If I'm working, I'm really conscious of being clean, but I only work a couple of days a week, and the rest of the time, I am in a very windy seaside town, so the likelihood of pong is small...

nocakes · 06/11/2015 23:33

Bunbaker I really appreciate your concern but I think it is just genetic, my dad and my sister, who is a picture of health, are both exactly the same. I have always been the reddest at the end of any keep fit class!

Katarzyna79 · 06/11/2015 23:40

I shower everyday not because of hygiene it's last thing after kids gone to sleep, mentally helps me distress a bit. My stress issues have got the better of me I don't know how to switch off I'm always on go mode like ready to do the next chore or can't switch my mind off, making lists, bit coo coo, I was never like this :( I do find it a chore especially when I'm tired, before getting married it never felt like a chore everything is a chore now .

I would like to forgo washing hair everyday natural oils in hair good, and hair looks healthier not washed daily, but I cannot tolerate cooking smells in my hair, now that I'm expecting this intolerance has been heightened. I just don't feel clean if I don't wash my hair too, or at least wet the entire head.

about 12 years ago I was showering more than twice a day, I do have OCD issues. So to go down to daily once is a big thing for me, in summer it will be at least twice.

But I would like to go to 1 every other day, I think everyday is not necessary, but I should add in my culture and religious cleanliness issues too I have to clean private areas with water after relieving myself. So I don't feel unclean, if I wasn't raised like that I think id use shower to clean those reigions everyday if not having shower everyday.

I think we take it for granted in west the water we have. We think we need a daily bath, or even twice daily bath, but do we really? Is it a need or a want, I think its the latter. Although generally men do get more sweaty...lived with 5 brothers I should know lol

When I was growing up in the 80s bath was once a week, I remember the boilers then 1 person would have a bath then the next would have to wait 1 hour min before water was hot again. My new rental home has got some weird boiler system causing us such problems but I will wait I have more patience now.

I think once a week for older kids is not enough but I wouldn't think ew dirty kids if someone told me that's what they do. As long as they don't stink its none of my concern.

Sazzle41 · 06/11/2015 23:41

Whats that bacteria that we all carry naturally on our skin called - staphyloccus... or something? I was talking to an ex Nurse & Dr years back who ran private clinic for minor cosmetic surgery (mole & vein removal etc and skin complaints - his specialities). She/he said poor hygiene makes that bacteria multiply and leads to Impetigo, scalp and skin fungal infections, boils & all sorts. They also reckoned poor hygiene of contract cleaners not washing hands and using filthy water increased MRSA/flesh eating necrosis skin infection. I was fascinated and now way more hygiene conscious re contact lens hygiene and hand washing. (eye infection probs, long running, they said up your hand washing).

Katarzyna79 · 06/11/2015 23:45

my mil from south asia, she tells me they bathe twice a day early morn then after work late evening in the rivers or makeshift showers. Then it baffles me why now that shes living in the UK I have to beg her to get in the bath?

I think they bathe more over there to keep cool rather than thinking of body dirt, also they find the UK cold so they don't want to step into a shower or bath everyday nevermind the warm private bathrooms they have here. me thinks element of laziness too.

Katarzyna79 · 06/11/2015 23:51

sazzledoesn't that have to be very poor hygiene? it cant occur forgoing a bath 1 day or even a week. It was very common in the 80s and before that time to bathe once a week I never heard of it back then, even now new to me.

what of people in dark ages and beyond, didn't they think it was actually harmless to bathe, they would go weeks without bathing forget 1 week lol

DeepBlueLake · 06/11/2015 23:53

I shower twice a day other than the winter months.

In my defence, I sweat very easily and can pong quite a bit.

Night is where I wash my hair, shave etc and in the morning I dip in and out as I just have a quick wash.

Salmotrutta · 07/11/2015 00:23

I shower every other day due to horrendously dry skin.

On the days I don't shower I wash the "pits and bits" etc.

But - I wash all my clothes regularly and obviously wear clean clothes every day.

All these people who shower 2 or 3 times daily because they can are the people who are wasting energy resources. Not to mention the people who wash towels and bed sheets every day.
Does nobody air beds properly nowadays or hang towels up to dry properly??

I wonder what they will do when governments start rationing power/energy use?

Because that's going to happen at some point in the not too distant future.

I actually do worry about the blinkered views of the people on this site at times.

Oil, gas and coal are all going to run out in a few decades but you are all blithely wasting energy having multiple showers a day and probably running tumble dryers etc. rather than hanging washing out.

I worry about our future energy-wise. I really do.

BillBrysonsBeard · 07/11/2015 00:28

Every day in summer because I feel more sticky and it's a good way of cooling off before bed.. Every other day now it's colder.
Longest I've been was 5 days at a festival (my dad actually gipped at the stench as me and my mates got in the car Grin)
It's lovely to feel clean!

SinglePringle · 07/11/2015 00:36

At least once a day.

Shower in the morning every day. Then again after the gym in the evening (so that's 4 times a week) and then often a long hot soak in the bath Sat night (either as prep to go out or before a night of wine and sofa) and Sunday afternoon with wine and Netflix.

I also swim twice a week so will have a quick shower after that.

Great, soft skin because I use an oil after each time I hit water.

springydaffs · 07/11/2015 01:19

I just don't get the showering every day thing. I shower the very least I can get away with. Pits and bits (inc feet) every day, cleanse and moisturise my face and neck morning and evening but that's it. Usually I shower every 3 or 4 days but only bcs I need to wash my hair and I may as well do the bod at the same time.

I'd like to say I'm worried about the planet but my main concern is my bills. I also don't enjoy the palaver of a shower: get wet, get cold, get out, get dry, moisturise. So much fuss! I fantasise about standing in a moisturising jets thing like a fake tan but moisturiser (but not if it makes me cold). It's the fuss and the cold I can't stand - so stressful.

I also hope to never have a bath ever again in my life. Baths are an unbelievable amount of fuss. The last time I had a bath was about 15 years ago.

I'm aghast there are pages and pages of posters who all shower every single day, sometimes twice a day. I just don't get it.

SurlyCue · 07/11/2015 02:04

Im quite shocked there are people so averse to washing! I dont understand how it is stressful to wash yourself. I find it stressful to not be able to wash myself daily. I grew up with a house full of daily washers, extended family i've stayed with over the years all daily washers, boyfriends (and their families if i stayed with them) all daily washers, everyone i've ever shared a house with has been a daily washer, Friends (we've discussed this many times due to MN threads) are daily washers. And most of us morning washers. It isnt even thought about, its just part of a daily routine like peeing when you wake up. I am sure there are many around me who dont wash daily. I know there are because some of them smell very bad but in general daily washing is the norm amongst people i know. Including my 86 year old granny who has a bath every morning.

CorydonFrills · 07/11/2015 02:16

For me a morning shower would be very stressful and I know I don't wash as often as I should. Don't know if I smell or not (to other people).

I will feel like I'm in a really mentally healthy place one day if personal hygiene ever becomes just part of my daily routine, not something I have to actively remind myself of and schedule in. Right now it takes a lot of mental effort.

shadowfax07 · 07/11/2015 02:19

I shower when I feel I need one, so anything from twice a day in summer, to every other day in cold weather.

Senpai · 07/11/2015 02:28

Once a day. Always, without fail.

DD is plunked in the crib with some toys while I get a nice 20 min shower.
