To ask how often do you shower?

I was talking to a friend about hygiene etc an she seemed horrified that I only shower every other day.

She said that she showers morning and night every day. I don't even have time for that! Or enough bathrooms!! The kids get bathed in the nights that I don't shower and DP showers every night. I find that if I shower every single day, I get dry skin, same with the kids too. So am I really as scruffy, dirty and unhygienic as I now feel?

"And I change my towels every day and my sheets twice a week"

Why?

Hollierthathou · 06/11/2015 22:43

OP

Unless you live where the water is very hard, your skin should not dry out by washing it. Use body lotion afterwards- that's why they make the stuff Hmm or use a moisturising shower wash.

SurlyCue · 06/11/2015 22:43

I don't understand why people shower in the mornings - what's the point when you just go out to get dirty straightaway?

It wakes me up
I get very sweaty at night
I like starting the day fresh
Sometimes i shower at night too.

expatinscotland · 06/11/2015 22:44

'You are a lot more likely to get skin problems if you don't.'

It's a wonder humankind has survived as long as it has then. Hmm

I'm not British by birth, either. In my native home, it's common to wash twice a day, cold water even, as it is so very hot. But many will do it with a cloth and water scrubbed over the body, or to swim.

I still don't get this, if you don't scrub yourself all over twice a day you are instantly a total minger.

Some people just don't sweat as much or smell.

I am a sweaty, smelly betty due to perimenopausal hormones.

SurlyCue · 06/11/2015 22:45

Nah, they make the stuff to make money. Your skin is waaaay down the list of reasons for making body lotion.

StrictlyMumDancing · 06/11/2015 22:45

cory I never understood it either, I grew up in a house of evening washers. And then I was gifted a wonderful thyroid condition and now I often wake up worse than after an hour at the gym...

Hollierthathou · 06/11/2015 22:46

LOL- why shower in the mornings? Because we seat litres of sweat every night.

You've only got to stand in the tube or a crowded train or a lift to realise that some people do not understand basic personal hygiene.

Yes, you can wash your armpits etc in the sink but you sweat all over so it's just as easy to dive under a shower for 5 minutes. Job done.

corlette · 06/11/2015 22:47

During the colder months, once a day before bed.
In the summer (I live in Australia), morning and evening. Although both are pointless as the humidity has me sweating like a mothertrucker within 15 seconds of getting out of the shower.

SurlyCue · 06/11/2015 22:47

Nooo! Who mentioned towels?? Shock never mention the T word on MN. There will be all out war by midnight.

CainInThePunting · 06/11/2015 22:48

I tend to shower morning and night if I'm at work but I don't think you are scruffy, dirty or unhygienic for showering every other day.

When I was growing up we had a bath once a week and did a five point sink scrub morning and night though the week.

Now, I do what makes me feel comfortable, you should do that too.

mrsjanedoe · 06/11/2015 22:49

Always at least every evening, I hate going into clean bedsheets feeling dirty.

I then shower I think I smell (so every morning if periods, after exercising, whenever necessary).

Bedsheets and towels are normally washed weekly.

SurlyCue · 06/11/2015 22:50

My heating wasnt working one day (thankfully no longer!) last week and i had to have a sink wash. It took longer than a shower and i was freezing! I dont understand why people do it rather than shower.

Every morning, I don't feel fresh otherwise. Il sometimes have a bath/shower at night if needed but not as a rule.

MediumBox · 06/11/2015 22:52

towels [y]

bettyberry · 06/11/2015 22:53

When I stink usually and I have quick shower if I've gotten all sweaty.

My skin dries out. I have psoriasis. I have to be very careful with my skin. I can't use body lotions because they make me itch and covering my arms with the greasy lotions on prescription interferes with my work (getting grease on photographic film or paper ruins days of work). So I shower when I need it not daily.

No soap touched my hair all summer and its turned into the most fab, shiny curls. I'm still not using soap on my hair. It gets a really good clean with water in the shower and combing alone.

Mmmmcake123 · 06/11/2015 22:54

As an earlier post said, this is where it can get competitive. Personal hygiene is directly affected by what you do each day and includes what you wear and where you sleep. How often you soak or shower doesn't need a benchmark.

Notcontent · 06/11/2015 22:55

Expat - actually, during periods of history when people didn't wash very much it was extremely common for people to get all sorts of skin complaints that are rare now...

MummySparkle · 06/11/2015 22:56

As a rule: every other day. But I also shower after DTD, if I feel like I smell, or ive been exercising. If I've been around the house and I'm not going out and the DCs are being a nightmare sometimes I will go a third day without a shower, or shower once DP gets home.

Baths are nice to relax in, but I never feel clean after one. I always come out feeling sweaty and ick

JaceLancs · 06/11/2015 22:57

Every other day, in winter - every day in summer
I have very dry hair and skin, so wash my hair maybe twice a week on average

Sallystyle · 06/11/2015 23:00

When I need one.

I have baths more often as I hate showers.

Will wash my pits and bits before work.

If I'm not working and don't smell then I won't wash unless I fancy reading in the bath.

So it depends. When I'm not working I'm not active so don't need to wash daily.

MyNameIsAlexDrake · 06/11/2015 23:02

Every morning. I sweat in bed at night so wouldn't feel clean otherwise.

I suspect a few of my workmates are in a every few days routine, I can tell as they reek at times, especially in the summer. Yuck.

sylviassecrets · 06/11/2015 23:02

I shower twice a day morning before work, evening after the gym.

nocakes · 06/11/2015 23:06

Sometimes 3 showers per day at moment, maybe my age(41..)Wake up after sweaty, restless night, hair everywhere, am booked onto a 10am class at gym, cannot leave house without shower and hairwash, then return, am a person who sweats so badly have to wash hair and shower again, then kids make me take them swimming, two boys so they ain't gonna hang around while I shower etc... So have to do it all again on return home. Pain

pretzelpieces · 06/11/2015 23:06

Every third day at the moment. Had to do every other day before I was pregnant but now I have super pregnancy hair it is fine three days between washes. Yay! I don't think you should feel unhygienic, I think it varies massively between people (and their environment/activities) how often it is necessary. Some people enjoy showering so do it to wake them up/relax. I don't, so I only do it to get clean.
