to think if you have a penis, you do not belong in a woman's prison

There is to be an appeal tomorrow, at Bristol Crown Court, regarding the decision to send violent criminal Tara Hudson, who works as a transsexual prostitute (still has a penis, as 80% of transsexuals do), to male prison. Tara wants to go to a female prison.

AIBU to think that if you have a penis, you should go to male prison?

People are arguing that Tara is at risk of sexual assault, but Tara is not unique in this - lots of (non transgender) men are vulnerable, and the prison service has a responsibility to protect them.

Yes- incredibly disappointed by Caroline Lucas.

howtorebuild · 03/11/2015 10:06

WEP also tweeted the petition.

BubsandMoo · 03/11/2015 10:12

Oh bloody hell, did they? Missed tgat

howtorebuild · 03/11/2015 10:14

I linked on a thread to their Twitter account, it's below the survey for street harassment.

BubsandMoo · 03/11/2015 10:17

Just had a look and can't see any tweet about it from WEP or my local branch, was it a local branch twitter? They're run by individuals

howtorebuild · 03/11/2015 10:20

I was a retweet on 27 October.

BubsandMoo · 03/11/2015 10:28

Oh bum, you're right.

FFS

howtorebuild · 03/11/2015 10:30

Are you going to bring it up in branch? I haven't joined, though attended a wep youth event.

PeasePuddingCold · 03/11/2015 11:23

Am depressed to see that Caroline Lucas, who I have generally considered the most sensible of the Greens, had jumped on the bandwagon and demanded Hudson be moved to a women's prison

Have a look at the Green's policy on sex-work and prostitution. Last time I looked - very disappointing (a bit like Amnesty).

Jaxsbum · 03/11/2015 11:25

CLucas will jump on any bandwagon going

TheXxed · 03/11/2015 11:56

Caroline Lucas has been basic for a while now.

iamaboveandBeyond · 03/11/2015 12:18

I'm a green member, their feminism is disappointing though, although a massive improvement on other parties. All policies are voted on, so i'm hoping to change this from the inside.

iamaboveandBeyond · 03/11/2015 12:20

I will admit that i havent looked at the WEP in detail, was a green member before they formed.

macdat · 03/11/2015 12:22

One of the reasons men and women are split up in prisons and in public toilets is the risk of attack. Men are naturally stronger than women (i mean just natural strength, no muscle training) so if a man were to attack a woman, it'd be a lot more difficult for her to defend herself against a physically stronger man than a woman.
Being transsexual doesn't suddenly give her a womans strength. Considering she has been violent before, this is only putting other women at risk now.
He still has a penis, still has testosterone, still has a mans strength. It's unfair to put a violent person with mens strength amongst women.
And I'm not being sexist, it's just the truth.

I think we should do like America and have a wing for people like her who are at risk for any reason. In America, they'll keep people who are likely to be attacked or have been attacked in a separate wing together. These people usually include pedophiles, rapists, transsexuals, ex police officers, ex prison guards etc....

HermioneWeasley · 03/11/2015 13:15

I didn't vote green this year based on their policies on sex women and trans doctrine

HermioneWeasley · 03/11/2015 13:15

Sex work not women

PeasePuddingCold · 03/11/2015 14:19

Ditto, Hermione

ForChina · 03/11/2015 14:21

Could anyone expand on that or link to the policy information please?

HairyLittleCarrot · 03/11/2015 18:22

A disturbing thought has been bubbling in my head around this topic.

The petition to move Tara to the womens' prison had thousands of signatures, presumably because the current movement around the transgender narrative has huge support from people who want to feel progressive and tolerant, and there is very little backlash or alternative position out there in the media. Everything to gain from taking up this position, and nothing to lose.

Meanwhile, the counter petition attracted next to nothing. Despite, on these threads alone there being many vocal opponents of the way womens' rights are being eroded by recent events.

I wanted to sign the counter petition, but I didn't, and here's why. I was scared of the actual risk involved to me. Not just the internet vitriol that inevitably bombards women who speak out, but the capacity of a certain contingent to doxx, to hack, and make to real, physical threats. Threats like the ones on terfisaslur.com

I wonder how many women are out there who want to oppose this sweeping tide of gender-identity stuff, but are really too scared to say what they are thinking because they genuinely fear the consequences?

CharlieSierra · 03/11/2015 18:25

Did the WEP tweet the original petition do you mean? If they did I'm going to have to withdraw my membership.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 03/11/2015 18:29

They retweeted it. No idea whether they actually read it. I've been wondering whether to get involved with WEP. I think I'll email them & see what response I get.

howtorebuild · 03/11/2015 18:33

mobile.twitter.com/WEP_UK/tweets. See 27 Oct.

iamaboveandBeyond · 03/11/2015 18:53

Same here hairy. I'm actually wary of posting here about it too.

venusinscorpio · 03/11/2015 19:04

You're so right, hairy. This is exactly what's happening. It's bullying, plain and simple. And it's really hard for me to see bullies winning.
