to think if you have a penis, you do not belong in a woman's prison

There is to be an appeal tomorrow, at Bristol Crown Court, regarding the decision to send violent criminal Tara Hudson, who works as a transsexual prostitute (still has a penis, as 80% of transsexuals do), to male prison. Tara wants to go to a female prison.

AIBU to think that if you have a penis, you should go to male prison?

People are arguing that Tara is at risk of sexual assault, but Tara is not unique in this - lots of (non transgender) men are vulnerable, and the prison service has a responsibility to protect them.

It's a really important point to clarify, though, isn't it?

It definitely is Rhonda - and it appears that she does have a fully functioning penis, seeing as reviews on adultwork.com (I wouldn't recommend going there) say that she was fucking men with it the day before she went to prison...

QueenLaBeefah · 30/10/2015 19:09

I think trans wings is a sensible solution

Tara wouldn't be safe in a male prison but that doesn't mean she should go to a female prison. Far from it. Women have enough shit to deal with as it is.

Although if Tara stopped going to pubs and starting fights she wouldn't be in this mess in the first place.

Werksallhourz · 30/10/2015 19:09

suburban Aye, none of the papers have, have they? Which begs the question: why not?

I thought Tara Hudson's identification on the adultwork site as "transsexual" was very interesting because it makes it pretty clear she has a functioning penis. She makes it clear she has a functioning penis that is able to penetrate; she is selling her services based on that premise.

Yet the media has reported her as transgender. I feel there is a deliberate muddying of the waters here. Most people think transgender woman = no penis.

I have to be honest here ... I am getting to the point where I feel I want to contact my MP about all this.

Cocolepew · 30/10/2015 19:09

On the bbc 6 oclock news it said (Im paraphrasing here) Taras mum has said she has gone undertaken painful gender surgery for over 7 years.
To me it looks like a boob job and hair extensions Confused

Yes, but no judge is going to say 'Right, cacks off, I need to see if you gender and sex match'.

howtorebuild · 30/10/2015 19:13

What are you going to ask your MP to do?

pestilence13610 · 30/10/2015 19:16

When I think about transwomen, I think crimplene trousers, fluffy cardigan and a good bitch about decent shoes in size 10. However, this is based on personal experience and may not be representative.

QueenLaBeefah · 30/10/2015 19:16

Well a judge isn't going to ask anyone to take their pants off but he/she could ask for medical reports.

pestilence13610 · 30/10/2015 19:18

Werksallhourz Hope this is not your MP

FriendofBill · 30/10/2015 19:19

I can't believe that social media has been allowed to dictate to the prison service.

What an absolute joke.
Why has this not been thoroughly looked into?
If this was a woman encroaching into men's space it would be a different story.

I'm furious Angry

What is the stance of the WEP on Women prisoners incarcerated with a violent trans Woman and her seven inch surprise?

Werksallhourz · 30/10/2015 19:21

Weirdly, if Tara Hudson had been described as a "transsexual gay man with significant breast implants" who wanted to transfer to a women's prison to avoid male abuse, I might have felt a bit different about the issue.

Not that I would have supported the move but I wouldn't have seen it as taking the piss so much, which indicates it has to be the "appropriation of womanhood" aspect of many transwomen that really gets to me. I don't see transsexual men as a threat in the way I see transgender women, probably because they don't claim they are women and demand access to all women-only spaces, services and facilities.

jellybeans · 30/10/2015 19:22

Wow there is some ignorance on this thread.

I don't like how if a man decides to call himself a female, his rights need to trump women's rights.

He's using his male status to get special treatment.

A man gets to decide what being a woman is (fake tits and lipstick?)

GruntledOne · 30/10/2015 19:35

And your point is? Does that make it ok to stick an extra risk in there?

Well, yes, if it complies with Prison Service rules, which apparently it does. In just the same way as it is OK to stick the various other violent women who have been imprisoned today in there. Because that is what it is for.

The fact that she has a penis simply means that they have to look at segregating her or taking other appropriate steps, in the same way as they segregate sex offenders, people with medical conditions requiring segregation or protection, and particularly violent prisoners. It's not rocket science.

It's pointless getting into a flap about people deciding to self-identify as a woman suddenly. It just doesn't work like that. You have to be able to demonstrate, as is the case here, that you have taken substantial steps to transition.

pestilence13610 · 30/10/2015 19:36

Tara is not a standard transwoman, more like a Thai ladyboy.
The few transpeople I have knowingly met, have been boringly normal.

noblegiraffe · 30/10/2015 19:39

A quick google suggests that Italy opened a transgender prison in 2010, and India has transgender prison blocks.

Nicky Morgan is discussing allowing people to 'self identify', the way they currently do in Ireland, so I'll flap away, thanks.

HelenaDove · 30/10/2015 19:42

Porridge was great Unlike the reality crap we have now.

QuintShhhhhh · 30/10/2015 19:42

The thought of going to prison is one thing (obviously not the only thing) that would stop me deliberately breaking the law.

In HER shoes, I would have made damn sure I was going nowhere near a prison and not bloody gone and assaulted someone!

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 30/10/2015 19:45

Repeatedly assaulted people Quint - 8 convictions for assault apparently

Werksallhourz · 30/10/2015 19:46

You have to be able to demonstrate, as is the case here, that you have taken substantial steps to transition.

Not according to the Equalities Act 2010. You only have to declare, or state that you intend to declare, you are of the opposite gender and the State has to recognise you as that gender.

To some extent, you could argue that, under this legislation, it is unlawful to even refer to someone as "transgender".
