to think if you have a penis, you do not belong in a woman's prison

There is to be an appeal tomorrow, at Bristol Crown Court, regarding the decision to send violent criminal Tara Hudson, who works as a transsexual prostitute (still has a penis, as 80% of transsexuals do), to male prison. Tara wants to go to a female prison.

AIBU to think that if you have a penis, you should go to male prison?

People are arguing that Tara is at risk of sexual assault, but Tara is not unique in this - lots of (non transgender) men are vulnerable, and the prison service has a responsibility to protect them.

I'd have thought that the reason that Tara would be safer in a women's prison is the same reason that women would be safer without her there. People with penises who commit violence against women are not unusual.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 30/10/2015 11:44

What this highlights for me is that the standards of journalism have fallen so far that not a single paper or website have bothered to discover some very salient facts which put a completely different slant on the case:

  1. Tara has a history of violent assaults - being convicted on 3 separate occasions
  2. Tara has a fully functioning penis
  3. Tara uses this penis frequently as attested by reviews on a sex worker site
  4. Tara has self reported that she enjoys deceiving people about her gender and then "surprising" them with her penis
  5. Tara has self reported that she does not live full time as a woman
  6. Tara has not requested a Gender Reassignment Certificate from her doctor
RickRoll · 30/10/2015 11:46

DodosNest, I am sure they knew at least some of these facts, they chose to ignore them. The photos in the media were taken from twitter feeds that make it very clear Tara is a professional male prostitute.

They scrolled through hundreds of posts to find the most demure looking photos so they could get this violent man into a woman's prison.

This worries me a lot more then - I was hoping they'd been given the photos by someone with a vested interest and not bothered to look any further, but if they've purposefully misreported the case in order to sway public opinion then that feels fraudulent to me.

Flingingmelon · 30/10/2015 11:53

Fair point effing, I meant that 'assault' is a pretty catch all term.

RickRoll · 30/10/2015 11:55

DodosNest, the Daily Mail routinely pulls photos off social media websites.

Their staff are expert at digging these things up. If you look at the Daily Mail report

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3291097/Transgender-woman-born-man-sent-male-prison-despite-fears-safety-following-assault-conviction.html

the photos are credited to Twitter and Instagram

The peace sign photo they have used is from Twitter, and to find it they must have scrolled past two messages of

"I'm on cam now at #AdultWork.com. Come check me out! "

and
"Ok I'm back in England ???? left early. I'm not saying the reason on Twitter because it's non of your business"

Now why did she leave Ibiza??? More violence?

emotionsecho · 30/10/2015 11:55

The appeal against sentence has been dismissed, asked if there is discretion within the Prison Service to reassess where the sentence is served, hopefully the answer to that question will be "No".

RickRoll · 30/10/2015 11:56

"Tara Hudson head drops as judge dismisses her appeal, she is taken back down"

"Judge dismisses Tara Hudson appeal... Asks whether there is discretion within the prison service to reassess where she serves sentence"

So back to prison, which is fair.

Judge hasn't ordered her to be sent to woman's prison. Which is also fair.

OP posts:
CultureSucksDownWords · 30/10/2015 12:00

The petition on change.org to move Tara Hudson to a women's prison currently has 138,418 signatures, which astounds me.

noeffingidea · 30/10/2015 12:02

culture because the situation is being misrepesented.

RickRoll · 30/10/2015 12:05

Tara's mum states:

"I'm outraged. The offense happened in the first place is because she faces transgender abuse."

WTF?

So transgender abuse caused Tara to attack and seriously injure a barman, himself gay.

Bullshit.

And because this is currently a very trendy bandwagon to jump on to show how open minded and tolerant you are, without any real understanding of the issues...

SettlinginNicely · 30/10/2015 12:10

Dodos, the media's selective reporting worries me too. I don't understand why.

Masterpiece1 · 30/10/2015 12:11

I think we will needs trans prisons to correctly deal with this issue. It's the best way to solve this issue.

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 30/10/2015 12:11

And because it gives people a nice feelgood "I am not a bigot " vibe. We have seen on this thread how anyone questioning this gets labelled as bad as racists and homophobes.

This is a violent offender. Repeatedly violent - in the offence being sentenced towards a man. There is an irony that people think her safety means being moved to a women's prison.why is she stating she would be safe there : because women are assumed more tolerant (she won't fit in without notice there either) or just less physically capable of injuring you?

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 30/10/2015 12:13

Poor little girl. Headbutting someone because she is abused. Hmm Honestly, is that what her mother believes. Plenty of lgbt experience abuse without becoming violent offenders.

And according to the reports it was refusing to serve a drunk person more booze.

RickRoll · 30/10/2015 12:15

Why wasn't Tara's attack on Chris Dwyer treated as a homophobic hate crime? (lots of trans people threaten violence against non-trans homosexuals)

Or does that only work in reverse, when Tara's mum says that all Tara's violence is due to transphobia?

OP posts:
RickRoll · 30/10/2015 12:17

Libraries, it seems rather unlikely that the attack had anything to do with being abused. Tara's victim is a gay man active in pride groups.

I'm tempted to say that anyone who claims to understand all the issues, doesn't.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/10/2015 12:23

Fair enough - that should really be not thought about the issues...

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 30/10/2015 12:33

Rick - I realised that. Hence the Hmm and the comment on what had been reported about the 'provocation'.Smile

sashh · 30/10/2015 12:35

SettlinginNicely

That sounds similar to the Thai 'ladyboys'. Nepal, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh have a legal 'third gender' for Hijra, not sure if they have separate prisons

RickRoll · 30/10/2015 12:40

Apparently Tara has EIGHT previous convictions.

uk.news.yahoo.com/court-hears-transgender-womans-ordeal-male-prison-122953036.html

Why then is Tara not being described as a 'violent thug', as the Daily Mail/Sun would normally do?

Interesting courtroom sketch btw. Are there any photos of Tara arriving at court?

BlackbirdsInaPie · 30/10/2015 12:43

Clearly M's Hudson is not going to be safe in a men's prison. But this not because she's really got a ladybrain. It's because transwomen are often the victims of male violence, and hypermasculinised misogyny (which says more about masculinist insecurities than anything else.

But there are many prisoners who are not safe in a man's prison and they're generally segregated for their own zafety.

And while M's Hudson wouldn't be safe in a man's prison, how safe would female prisoners be, if what has been quoted about by er use of her penus is accurate?

Thus is rl , not Orange is the New Black
