Most people are clueless about protein or calcium needed

Floflomo · 26/10/2015 14:57

I follow a vegan diet and the amount of people that go on about protein or calcium is ridiculous and just shows they are totally clueless.

The RDA for protein isn't that big at all, many veg contains protein so before even getting onto to nuts, seeds and pulses I've had half of the RDA just from veg.

Calcium is in way more foods than just dairy, I had figs in porridge for breakfast made with almond milk. For lunch I'm having a salad with lots of leafy greens with a dressing made from tahini, so I'm doing just great with calum and getting it from a variety of sources.

I seem to have a very dirty mind...

ConstanceMarkYaBitch · 26/10/2015 15:04

And we should care about your dietary choices because.....?

also, aibu?

howabout · 26/10/2015 15:05

Definitely agree with you re protein and calcium having had 2 dds who refused to wean from breast to cows' milk and are none the worse for it. Loads of vegans in India never even consider this.

(I am not a vegan)

Axekick · 26/10/2015 15:08

So you are happy being vegan?

That's great! Crack on and ignore anyone who tries to convince you not to be.

MumOnTheRunAgain · 26/10/2015 15:08

You are right op! Keep doing what you are doing! I bet you are rarely ill either?

Floflomo · 26/10/2015 15:13

I don't know why people would care about my dietary choice, but most people seem to have a view they just hold in and its always a pretty ignorant view.

Great point about India, although they are quite dairy heavy, but no one over there worry's about not having enough b12!

Most people are clueless, but thankfully you have seen the righteous path OP Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/10/2015 15:19

Do you think that some people are vegan as a disguise for an eating disorder? Because I do. Of course, there are millions of healthy vegans but a significant proportion of the ones in the UK are restricting diet for reasons that are worrying.

BrandNewAndImproved · 26/10/2015 15:19

I agree, you don't need meat for protein and there's more calcium in green veg then milk.

Everyone thinks milk is amazing but there's been plenty of trials showing it isn't and it doesn't help your bones or teeth.

However when I followed a vegan diet with loads of green veg and I was hitting my nutrition levels on mfp with all the nuts and avocados ect I actually felt rough and tired.

I now eat meat and cheese again but not in huge quantities. I went vegan for health reasons not ethical.

SwedishEdith · 26/10/2015 15:21

Average life expectancy in India has only just reached 68.

museumum · 26/10/2015 15:24

It does take effort to be a well-informed vegan who eats healthily and gets all their nutrients.
I know that I couldn't do it, I don't devote enough head space to food and I eat quick snacks too often. But I am pleased to hear that many people can.

However, I also knew a good few teenage girls who just dropped the animal products from their diet and didn't eat healthily and I guess this is many people's experience of veganism.

Floflomo · 26/10/2015 15:25

That's pretty high considering the vast amount of people over there are in actual poverty.

So a vegan that carefully makes sure they get a balanced diet, I knew someone would start talking about eating disorder. Only on mn is trying to eat healthy an eating disorder .

OP posts:
Floflomo · 26/10/2015 15:27

Its not that hard to balance it. Just it a variety of foods

IndomitabIe · 26/10/2015 15:30

I agree, OP.

RDA for protein is 1g per kg body weight, isn't it?

There's about 3g in the average slice of white bread (more in brown/whole meal), about 1.5g in the milk you put in tea. 1g per 45g potatoes. So it does quickly add up, I agree!

arethereanyleftatall · 26/10/2015 15:31

I don't eat meat to be healthy particularly. I eat it cos it's delicious.

No thanks to a vegan life.

I'm happy for you you're happy with it.

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 26/10/2015 15:33

That's great OP. Make sure you do get some vitamin B12 though - not sure why you are dismissive about that - vit B12 deficiency is not fun.

RealityCheque · 26/10/2015 15:34

Being vegan does NOT equal "eating healthy". If you're happy then full your boots, but let's not make shit up!

MumOnTheRunAgain · 26/10/2015 15:38

What's not healthy about eating vegan?

MumOnTheRunAgain · 26/10/2015 15:39

reality what is a vegan lacking?

troubleatmillcock · 26/10/2015 15:40

God, I can rest easy now.

Thank god for this post.

Floflomo · 26/10/2015 15:42

In India b12 isn't a huge issue as all veg has it as isn't washed away by high power jet washes like UK supermarkets stuff.

OP posts:
Floflomo · 26/10/2015 15:44

I didn't say a vegan diet was automatically healthy. Chips and coke are usually vegan.

CoteDAzur · 26/10/2015 15:48

"there's more calcium in green veg then milk."

Since we are all for alleviating cluelessness on this thread, here is a new word: Bioavailability.

XiCi · 26/10/2015 15:52

Strange post
Not everyone in India is vegan, not by a long shot. There's about 30% of the population that are vegetarian and I'd bet my bottom dollar it's the wealthy people in the cities, more likely to be meat and fish eaters that are boosting the life expectancy in recent years.
The only vegan I know eats a very unhealthy diet but obviously you don't OP so crack on. Don't know what the purpose of the post is though

WMittens · 26/10/2015 15:56

This. Mmmm, bacon.

Average life expectancy in India has only just reached 68.

Wow! It must be because of their diet, because the socio-economic divide is non-existent, poverty is at an all-time low, the quality of sanitation is exemplary and, of course, India is so sparsely populated. The roads also rank among the safest and least-congested in the world.
