Aaliyah Reign?! Seriously?!

So, Katherine Jenkins, a woman with about as regular and average a name as they come, has called her daughter... Aaliyah Reign.

AIBU to be sick of celebrities (who almost always have utterly ordinary names, Katie Price I'm also looking at you) giving their babies the most godawful names you could think of??

And worst of all, it's spreading to normal people. I occasionally wander over to the baby names thread on MN when I need a laugh and, genuinely, there are people on there suggesting all manner of ridiculous names, including... wait for it... Zebulon.

I mean WTF is that?!

I'm serious, there should be some sort of law against this, these people need to be stopped.

AIBU?

YANBU.

Snossidge · 30/09/2015 19:43

I don't think Aaliyah is an awful name.

MinecraftWonder · 30/09/2015 19:43

YANBU. I just vommed in my own mouth a little.

scatterthenuns · 30/09/2015 19:43

I'm just shocked she didn't go for a wannabe-posh name.

MinecraftWonder · 30/09/2015 19:44

It's that K that started it...different 'enough' to take it to the next level in the quest to be different.

Catherine Jenkins would never dream of using such a bloody awful name.

shoopshoopsong · 30/09/2015 19:45

Reign is weird but what's wrong with Aaliyah? I just think of the R'n'B singer

wowfudge · 30/09/2015 19:45

Aaliyah means something though doesn't it? Think her husband's American - they seem to have different attitudes to names in the States. At least the first name is recognised girl's name, although not a Welsh one.

LadyLonely1 · 30/09/2015 19:45

I think it's mean of you op, this is a newborn baby.

AnyoneButAndre · 30/09/2015 19:46

I was a bit Confused at first because I think of Aaliyah as a Black American and/or Muslim name. However a quick Google reveals that it's originally Hebrew and her DH is Jewish.

Not a Scooby about Reign though.

KourtneyK · 30/09/2015 19:47

What's wrong with the name Aaliyah?! Confused

wowfudge · 30/09/2015 19:50

You beat me to it Andre!

Sighing · 30/09/2015 19:50

Aaliyah - there are 5 in my DC's school. Locally it's as popular as Isaac.

Thighbrow · 30/09/2015 19:50

Aaliyah isn't to my taste but it's not that offensive - is it? She could have named her something far more ridiculous like Moon Unit. Or table. Or Crap Bag.

JasperDamerel · 30/09/2015 19:53

Aaliyah is a perfectly normal name, though. It's was the 125th most common girls' name in 2014, beating Lauren and Rebecca.

Snossidge · 30/09/2015 19:53

I only know 2 Aaliyahs and they are both white, blonde girls. And one Alia who is Turkish.

InkleWinkle · 30/09/2015 19:54

I know an Aaliyah. It's not as outlandish as you think.

StrangeLookingParasite · 30/09/2015 19:56

At least it's not Rocket Zot.

SaucyJack · 30/09/2015 19:56

I have nothing politically correct to say, so I shall say nothing at all.

JasperDamerel · 30/09/2015 19:57

Yes, there's one in DS's class at school. Come to think if it, I know far more Aaliyahs under 10 than I do Katherines.

Sparklingbrook · 30/09/2015 19:58

The child can look forward to everyone asking how it's spelt or guessing the spelling wrongly for the rest of it's life.

I don't like KJ much but can't remember why. Blush

PastaPrincess · 30/09/2015 19:58

Aaliyah is fairly tame. What bugs me the most is people changing the spelling of fairly common names for no reason to make them more "original".

Reign is a Kardashian name, it'll probably become more popular now.

Tiggeryoubastard · 30/09/2015 19:59

I agree, OP. it is dreadful. And yes, it's more popular in downmarket circles.

Sparklingbrook · 30/09/2015 20:00

How is it pronounced?

XiCi · 30/09/2015 20:01

I love the name Aaliyah, don't see anything strange in it at all. And I really don't understand your logic that just because she has a classic name she must therefore give her child a classic name.

And you think there should be a law against it? Against what exactly, what names fit your criteria? Maybe Katherine Jenkins would think your kids names were shit. Or maybe, like most people, she couldn't give a fuck what other people named their kids
