being a twat with school uniform?

My husband says I'm being a bit of a twat and I thought I would check mumsnet for anyone else's opinion....
Every year, when it starts to get cold my daughter ditches the school dress and clarks shoes for a new pair of hunter wellies and leggings with a polo top and school jumper- usually with some kind of branded coat that's the same colour as the boots (yes lots of thought goes into this)
Now DD is almost 8, she's starting to take care of her clothes a bit more, would it be (as my husband says) a step too far for me to buy her Ralph Lauren polo tops for school in the winter?

He says it's fine that she has the hunter wellies, it's fine that she even has a designer coat, but the polo tops are just twattish and a bit "try hard" for school.
Maybe I'm seeing it wrongly, but I like Ralph Lauren, why not? I don't see why she can wear this stuff out of school and it's great, but in school it's a big no no?

One word:

WHY??

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 24/09/2015 19:44

Your face will change and you be kissing you showing off, goodbye, if your little one goes to my dd's ex senior school. There's no designer wear allowed there. And quite ready but too
Why does an 8 year old child need to designer wear, especially for school.

Yes, if it's got a school jumper over anyways then what's the point it'll just look like any other polo shirt. Plus in my experience children aren't allowed logo clothing in school so a Ralph lauren polo would be frowned upon if it had the wee logo in the corner.

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 24/09/2015 19:45

Someone isn't getting the attention they feel they deserve I think. OP just for the record, my dps family are properly posh ( think BIG house and dogs, long family name ) and they don't wear designer. They told me it's common.....and in Glasgow the more labels you wear the poorer you are. You may be giving out CHAV vibes accidentally Grin posh people I know it's generally wax jackets hiking boots and a hip flask Grin
I love visiting the in laws....

Wellies - fine, lots of brands out there, no big deal if she gets lots of wear out of them I guess. Your choice and all that. But I assume she only wears these to and from school and for playtimes. It would not be good for her to wear them all day in the classroom and most schools wouldn't want them to be anyway and actively discourage it.

Branded coat - ditto. I guess if its going to get lots of wear and you like it, can double up as out of school coat.

I'd be concerned about the branded stuff going missing - things often do at schools even when you have names in them. I'd also be concerned about your daughter getting them stained in school - these things happen with some frequency. She should feel happy to just get on and do her activities without worrying about them getting marked. But if you are happy and willing to risk it, and not give your DD grief if things get damaged or lost - its your money.

Branded polo shirts - waste of your money. They will get covered in whiteboard pens and felt tip marks, paint and glue, etc. which are a nightmare to get out. As teaching staff I have given up on wearing my best stuff for school - it gets spoiled and damaged. I tend to buy most of my work stuff in high street sales - I'm not willing to throw money away.

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 24/09/2015 19:46

Your a twat if you don't buy her matching handbag to go with her designer coat darhling

WhoTheFIsJeff · 24/09/2015 19:47

This is hilarious! Biscuit

CheekyMaleekey · 24/09/2015 19:47

Why would you want a child wearing wellies all day? She must look daft.

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 24/09/2015 19:49

cheeky if the child isn't wearing them all day nobody will know how much debt this chav is in she can afford them?! It's all about making other people think you're loaded.

BathTangle · 24/09/2015 19:49

I'm thinking reverse AIBU?

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 24/09/2015 19:51

Who cares. I'm enjoying itGrin I fucking love stealth boasting chavs. Mortgage arrears but Barbour jackets...

WhoTheFIsJeff · 24/09/2015 19:51

Looking at an old thread of yours OP, you wouldn't have to scrape money together if you didn't buy Hunter wellies, Ralph Lauren polo tops and a designer coat.

HTH,

LurcioAgain · 24/09/2015 19:54

Nul points, OP.

You should have drawn your audience in with a rant about the shoddy quality of (insert well known perfectly adequate high street brand of your choice that you know a lot of mumsnetters are quite happy with) polo shirts, got everyone arguing, then drip-fed (ideally in separate posts) the Hunter wellies and the Ralph Lauren polo shirts. By that point every one would have been so engrossed in the bunfight over high street brand whatever that half the posters wouldn't have noticed you were on the wind up.

DameMargaretOfChalfont · 24/09/2015 19:55

STOP FEEDING.........

Sunshineandsilverbirch · 24/09/2015 19:56

You can dress your child in whatever you like.

However I have to question why you'd feel the need to out an 8 yo in a £45 polo shirt?

What is the point? I don't see the cost benefit argument.

It will get covered in glue and felt tip, yogurt and mud. And she'll grow out if it in a few months.

Why spend £225 on a week's worth of polo shirts which look pretty much identical to the M&S ones at £22.50.

And yes, I did check the prices.

I wouldn't think you were a twat. I wouldn't notice which I suspect would rather defeat the point.

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 24/09/2015 19:57

Come on. Designer equals instant class don't you know.....Grin

being a twat with school uniform?
TheWitTank · 24/09/2015 19:58

Hunter wellies are shit, Aigle are much better. And yes, YABU. If this was real. Which it isn't.

LooseSeal · 24/09/2015 19:59

Any Parent dressing their child in brand new hunters (as opposed to a pair of well worn hand me down ones) matching designer coat and Ralph Lauren polo at DDs school, state but in a very naice area, would be looked down on as horribly flashy and common.

Unreasonablebetty · 24/09/2015 20:02

Well, I will defend myself where I can, and she doesn't spend the whole day in her wellies, they wear plimsoles whilst in school.

Fair play, husband does have a point.
It's nothing to do with being a chav- I just become aware that sometimes there are nicer things than DD currently has, and I just think it's a good idea to get them...
Might sound like I'm being a twat, and I must be if it's more than my husband who thinks so, I just thought it was a great idea for a moment.

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 24/09/2015 20:05

It has everything to do with being a chav. Those who have, don't advertise. Those who don't, fake it and get it horribly wrong....

moggiek · 24/09/2015 20:05

Poor kid.

CheekyMaleekey · 24/09/2015 20:06

I just can't see why anyone would want their child to be in wellies unless it's absolutely pouring down. I live in the countryside and pale wear wellies in the fields, but would be embarrassed to send their children to school in them

Notgivingin789 · 24/09/2015 20:06

DS wears a branded coat to school- though that's about it. He has had it for three years now. I think the Ralph Lauren and hunter wellies to wear to school is a bit much. I don't particularly like it when I see kids dressed in designer gears from head to toe.

DS is at a fee paying school and and they only designer gear I've seen on the children are their jackets and that's it. I hate Hunter wellies, I just have the normal blue ones for DS.

The Ralph Lauren polo shirt is not needed at all! I wouldn't even buy it for DS, don't particularly like the brand..though I do like their bras!

CheekyMaleekey · 24/09/2015 20:07

People, not pale
