To think that it's odd that the royal family just brush this under the carpet?

Tbh I don't give much of a shiny shite about the royals generally, but saw Prince Harry on TV this morning and I've been thinking about him today with regards to his questionable parentage. I say questionable but anyone with a pair of eyes can see that he's James Hewitt's son - he's the absolute spitting image of him. Also he looks nothing like Charles or William.

Obviously this has been raised by the tabloids before, but I find it a bit weird that the whole thing is flatly denied by anybody involved even though the truth is staring everyone right in the face.

It raises some interesting questions: surely Harry has a right to know who his father is? If it transpired he was not Charles' son then would he still be a true part of the Royal Family? Would he still be 2nd in line to the throne? It's a right can of worms.

my hubby and i both have blue eyes .but my eldest son has dark brown eyes .and i can asure you the milkman is not his father .so that just blew that daft theory away

Indeed, Aprilanne. Your son's eye colour is an example of a genetic phenomenon known as complementation.

Basically, a person's eye colour is controlled by lots of different genes (about 15, if I remember right). These genes come in different versions, some that, in certain combinations, result in blue eyes and some that, in certain combinations, result in brown eyes.

When egg meets sperm, these combinations get mixed around again so that the baby can have an eye colour different to that of his / her parents.

Unfortunately, the simplistic way genetics is taught in school means that a lot of people think that blue-eyed parents can't have brown-eyed kids, resulting in such parents being on the receiving end of many a tiresome comment.

Do people really believe that if Diana thought for one moment Harry could be Hewitts son she wouldn't have had things taken care of.

She would have known full well what would be said and I dont for a minute think she would have done that to any child of hers.

The slurs are dreadful and a load of bollocks.

DSClarke · 08/09/2015 16:23

Mick Hucknall!

Whoever posted that has made my day (which has been pretty shit ironing in labels).
Thank you

BoffinMum · 08/09/2015 17:00

Well it's annoying to be wrong but at least I know a new cool thing Grin

How heritable is height then?

Bing0wings · 08/09/2015 17:08

I don't think he looks like Charles/Diana or Diana's brother. He looks like James Hewitt to me. But i'm sure Harry know's who his Dad is, whether it's Charles or Mr Hewitt.

Bing0wings · 08/09/2015 17:12

I take it back! He DOES look like Prince Phillip. He doesn't look like Diana though. Perhaps he's Prince Phillip and James Hewitt's child.

profbadbride · 08/09/2015 17:25

Sorry if I sounded a little militant, BoffinMum, it's one of my little hobby horses! So please don't take my comments to heart.

As for heightit depends what you mean by "heritability" this is a very specific term in population genetics, and it makes my head hurt, see here

But if you mean, "how many genes are involved in a person's height", I think the answer is "lots", plus environmental influences. For more brain-ache, see here, first couple of lines of the abstract hopefully answers your question?

Genetic diseases aside, I can think of no human traits that are governed by simple, single-gene dominance:recessiveness relationships (am prepared to be corrected!).

It's complicated Grin

BoffinMum · 08/09/2015 17:28

Well, if I am wrong, then I am wrong. It's science, innit? To be fair I did attempt to look it up and greyed out mentally when I saw the Punnet Square in all its glory. I would like to know the probability though, TBH.

BoffinMum · 08/09/2015 17:29

If it genetics wasn't complicated then we wouldn't be here, as we would all be too similar, and we would have been wiped out by a virus or something.

DinosaursRoar · 08/09/2015 18:19

We tend to have the Harry parentage thread every few years here.

The general theme goes:
a) lots of posts saying Harry looks like Hewitt
b) lots of posts saying Harry looks like Prince Philip
c) lots of posts questioning if Prince Philip knew Hewitt's mother...
d) sensible people pointing out Harry looks like every member of his mums family - and then oddly nobody questioning how fucking weird it was that Diana seemed to want to shag someone who looks a lot like her brother and dad...

NewLife4Me · 08/09/2015 18:24

could that be one of the reason's they said off with her head, well in modern terms anyway.
The more I'm hearing about the Royals the more I realise they are just the same as all the monarchs we think conducted the worst atrocities.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 08/09/2015 18:29

I could say he is the double of prince Charles but I could also say he is the double of James Hewitt. He's kind of a mix between the 2.
Really strange

profbadbride · 08/09/2015 18:40

Yup, it's all part and parcel of the rich tapestry of life. And keeps a lot of academics in beer Grin

Talking of Punnett Squaressuddenly thought of a simple trait in humansthe ABO blood system. But if you're after probabilities for eye colours, I'm not sure the science is quite there yet...

Sunsoo · 08/09/2015 19:20

I think he looks like Rebekah Brooks...

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 08/09/2015 20:38

About the height thing - I seem to remember reading that boys are more likely to be tall if their mothers are. Not sure if that's true though.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 08/09/2015 20:47

Have only read first page ....
Possibly does look like Hewitt (my DH has always thought so)
Also like Diana's brother

But first response to your post is that this is why any inheritance or title goes to the eldest son (now child)
People tend to be more faithful earlier in relationships? Shock

JugglingFromHereToThere · 08/09/2015 21:05

Also I think it's odd when people say things like "The slurs are dreadful" Sansoora
Because both Charles and Diana obviously did have affairs during the marriage and have "admitted" this
Why is it then so shocking if a child is born?

Similar double standards have historically existed, and still do to an extent, regarding pre-marital sex (most at least nowadays have no problem with this) and the birth of children outside "wedlock" Shock (some people still not completely OK about and used to be a huge scandal)

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 08/09/2015 21:17

I think what a lot of people would consider the 'slur' is the implication that a child has been lied to about their parentage for the benefit of adults.

Though, of course, it is a bollocks rumour so that's a bit irrelevant.

Garrick · 08/09/2015 21:35

I did this to take my mind off things ... It doesn't show anything interesting, but it's always fun to swap people's hair around :)

To think that it's odd that the royal family just brush this under the carpet?

TwmSionCati · 08/09/2015 21:37

He does look like a Windsor/Spencer "anyone with a pair of eyes" can see.

Moln · 08/09/2015 21:43

at Garrick's hair swapping.

My cat's ginger btw, but don't be getting ideas. He's neutered.

Garrick · 08/09/2015 21:43

I think H looks quite good with his dad's hair.

Garrick · 08/09/2015 21:45

Grin Mine is, too! I never thought of giving Harry her hair ... or her his face [eek]

ComposHatComesBack · 08/09/2015 22:14

Talking of gingers. Surely Ed Sheerin was the product of a knee trembler backstage after a Simply Red gig? (Joke)

Garrick · 08/09/2015 22:19

The squeamish might want to look away now (or open a can of Whiskas)

I'm blaming you, Moln.
