migrants - AIBU to wonder how this will all work out ?

My understanding of the migrant crisis is that the majority of the migrants are coming from countries which do not, in any way, share or support Western beliefs/values/way of life. They are now flooding into Western Europe in the hundreds of thousands. Nobody knows who they are or their background in their home country. AIBU to wonder what will be the result of this ?

They are fleeing war/violence etc. AIBU to wonder why, when they reach Hungary, which is a 'safe' country, (although economically depressed), is it not good enough and they are determined to reach Germany, UK, Austria etc ?

AIBU to wonder why the majority of these migrants feel it is acceptable to stampede through European law immigration procedures to reach their chosen country rather than wait and be correctly processed in the 'safe country they have landed in ? Surely if a person has landed in a 'safe' country, after witnessing goodness knows what in their home country, they should respect and adhere to the policies and procedures of that country ?

AIBU to wonder how this will all work out ?

I would like to hear your calm and measured thoughts please................

It's also easy to lump all people of a particular culture or religion into one isn't it? Is it really that difficult to see people as individuals?
As soon as you start saying things like "They will/are...." Or "all Muslims/Christians/Jews..." It's obvious that whatever you're about to say comes from ignorance, generalisations and bigotry.

Iwasworried · 05/09/2015 16:50

Some of youse lot don't seem to have much to do with the great British values of tolerance and diversity. When are you leaving then? There are other people out there who need your space. Off you go.

emotionsecho · 05/09/2015 16:51

Janet whose talking about taking in 1 million refugees? More scare tactics.

As for the taking us back in terms of culture, even more scaremongering.

I hope you are equally alarmed by all the white homophobes of other religions and none that currently reside in the UK, or are they okay because they are part of our 'culture' and 'values' and can trace their ancestory in the UK back generations?

JanetBlyton · 05/09/2015 16:55

We need to decide as a nation how much immigration we want or need. The only birth rates not falling are from groups in the UK like Pakistanis and Bangladeshis who have large families. If it were not for that and the net 300,000 immigrants who came last year (600,000 gross) we would have trouble gathering enough tax to pay old age pensions. So more people isn't necessarily a bad thing.

However ISIS has talked about sending 1m muslims to Europe ensuring that within that 1m are some terrorists and secondly there are far too many people in the middle east who come here who have very old fashioned views on the position of women which is something 100 years ago we fought so hard to get rid of. If the men cannot control their sexuality why not make the men stay indoor not the women and only let the men out when covered totally in black robes accompanied by the woman? Why do it their way round which seems the more dangerous way as it lets these men out who apparently cannot control themselves if they see an ankle.

I have not called anyone thick. I don't think that's helpful.

Identifying racism and bigotry is different. We should not be afraid of naming prejudice when we see it.

Pipbin · 05/09/2015 16:59

Do you remember the TV series 7up? It was a TV series where they followed the life of about 8 different children starting from when they were 7 and then interviewing them every 7 years.
Well a good few years ago they did and update on them, I think they are in their 60s now.
Anyway, one of the men had grown up in the East End and spent a lot of time complaining about all the foreigners who had moved into the area, how it was changing and the shops were different. He didn't like they way they didn't learn the language or make any attempt to integrate. He didn't like how they had their own shops selling products from their own country. He said 'no one asked us if we wanted them to move here'.
Without a hint of irony they then showed how he had retired to Spain and spent most days drinking in an English pub and did his shopping at an English Tesco. He couldn't see the irony that he didn't speak a word of Spanish and had never spent any time with any of the local Spanish people.

Citation needed.

CatThiefKeith · 05/09/2015 17:03

Pipbin that doesn't suprise me at all. I lived in the Sapin in the 80's and some of the English out there then had been there 20 years and spoke no Spanish at all - and this was in a predominantly Spanish town. If the Spanish didn't understand them they just shouted louder.

Rarity08 · 05/09/2015 17:03

Pipbin I watched 7 up, yes the irony.
From what I understand a lot of the Syrian refugees are fleeing ISIS, not actively joining them.

Cerseirys · 05/09/2015 17:07

Sadly Janet, those views aren't confined to Muslims. How often do you hear people saying a rape victim was "asking for it" because she was wearing revealing clothes? And as for homophobia, I know plenty of gay men who've been beaten up for being gay. Always by white British men.

Moreshabbythanchic · 05/09/2015 17:14

sansoora believe me or not, I was there and it happened, even when I wrote on here about it it made me breathless and sweating as if it was happening again.

I will add liar to all the other names I have been called by people who have a different view and experience to me, but will I lose any sleep over it, NO, I wont because you are all faceless people who I will never meet, thank goodness.

Pipbin · 05/09/2015 17:17

I wont because you are all faceless people who I will never meet, thank goodness.

Right back at you there.

emotionsecho · 05/09/2015 17:18

Yes it's funny isn't it how the British moving into the Brit enclaves in the Costas don't integrate with the Spanish, don't learn the language, want their own shops, food, bars, etc., expect the Spanish Health system to take care of them and speak English to them and get all huffy when they don't, etc., etc., but's that's okay and how dare the Spanish feel resentful about it.

Moreshabbythanchic · 05/09/2015 17:19

Plus of course in your perfect little worlds we all know that racism only works one way.

Pipbin · 05/09/2015 17:20

And, Emotion you will notice that all Brits living abroad refer to themselves as ex pats, because that is somehow different to migrant.

Pipbin · 05/09/2015 17:22

Plus of course in your perfect little worlds we all know that racism only works one way.

Of course racism works all ways. Anyone who takes exception to someone based solely on the colour of their skin is racist. No one on here is denying that.

emotionsecho · 05/09/2015 17:22

Oh yes indeed Pipbin.

No-one has said, nor implied in any way, shape or form, that racism only works one way Moreshabby.

Kampeki · 05/09/2015 17:23

Plus of course in your perfect little worlds we all know that racism only works one way.

In what way would that be perfect, shabby?

Moreshabbythanchic · 05/09/2015 17:24

being called a white whore and being spat at by a bunch of youths of a different nationality is not racist then?

MagpieCursedTea · 05/09/2015 17:25

Plus of course in your perfect little worlds we all know that racism only works one way.

Two wrongs don't make a right though do they? So if someone made a comment to you based on your race, that doesn't make it okay for you to judge their entire race based on that one interaction.

Pipbin · 05/09/2015 17:28

being called a white whore and being spat at by a bunch of youths of a different nationality is not racist then?

Yes of course it is.

And this has something to do with desperate people fleeing their war torn homeland because...............?

Pipbin · 05/09/2015 17:31

being called a white whore and being spat at by a bunch of youths of a different nationality is not racist then?

And if they were Australian then you'd be against letting any more Australians into the country?
I've had far more abuse in the street from hairy arsed white builders than I have non English people. Maybe we should kick all the builders out.

EuropaFanatic · 05/09/2015 17:32

Sorry, Pipbin, I referred to myself as an Economic Migrant, but what I think your sweeping statement shows is that too many people are prepared to make such sweeping statements regarding racism, bigotry etc. just as a means to heighten the topic and try to draw sympathy to their point of view.

My own opinion is basically that oil and water don't mix easily and the UK should implement proper controls on who is granted asylum and that they are granted asylum for the right reasons rather than as a knee jerk reaction to keep the bleeding hearts happy.

jorahmormont · 05/09/2015 17:32

I was bullied in school by a blonde girl.

Maybe we just shouldn't let any blonde people in either, just on the off-chance?

Kampeki · 05/09/2015 17:34

My own opinion is basically that oil and water don't mix easily

What does that mean, exactly?
