migrants - AIBU to wonder how this will all work out ?

lovelyconverse123 · 04/09/2015 20:27

My understanding of the migrant crisis is that the majority of the migrants are coming from countries which do not, in any way, share or support Western beliefs/values/way of life. They are now flooding into Western Europe in the hundreds of thousands. Nobody knows who they are or their background in their home country. AIBU to wonder what will be the result of this ?

They are fleeing war/violence etc. AIBU to wonder why, when they reach Hungary, which is a 'safe' country, (although economically depressed), is it not good enough and they are determined to reach Germany, UK, Austria etc ?

AIBU to wonder why the majority of these migrants feel it is acceptable to stampede through European law immigration procedures to reach their chosen country rather than wait and be correctly processed in the 'safe country they have landed in ? Surely if a person has landed in a 'safe' country, after witnessing goodness knows what in their home country, they should respect and adhere to the policies and procedures of that country ?

AIBU to wonder how this will all work out ?

I would like to hear your calm and measured thoughts please................

This thread has given me a depressing new insight into why so many people died in the Holocaust. Lots of Polish Jews who dressed funny and had a weird religion and probably wouldn't integrate, properly, right?
^So sad that this is still true.

It shouldn't matter from a humanitarian pov, but Syrians of all classes and education are desperately trying to flee. And to posters who query the apparent preponderance of young men among the refugees - perhaps one example, which should be familiar to anyone who reads the papers, whatever your politics - as the Nazi army reached Belgium, the young Ralph Miliband (father of Ed and David) set off for the coast on foot with his dad. They left behind his mum and young sister, believing the journey would be too arduous for the girl. Miraculously, both mum and sister survived the Occupation in hiding. Please don't underestimate the desperation, the panic, of refugees suddenly forced to flee their homes. There are no easy answers, no "right choices", if you're suddenly thrown into that kind of horror.

So sorry about your SIL's family, IPityThePontipines. I don't know what to say, all we can do is hope for a miracle for them.

emotionsecho · 05/09/2015 15:05

LilMiss and they are claiming asylum in other countries most notably Germany and Sweden who are welcoming them.

Out of a belated sense of humanity the UK has now agreed to take more refugees from Syria, the Syrian refugees are not all screaming that they want to enter the UK.

The camps and conditions in Hungary have been severely criticised by Amnesty International.

LilMissSunshine9 · 05/09/2015 15:12

Me demonising Muslims? - its the first thing I ever posted related to Muslims and its my real life hand experience I was posting about because someone else up the thread thinks Muslim sexism is a figment of all our imaginations.

How is my example demonising Muslims? I didn't say all Muslims are like that I said 5 guys were.

Emotionsecho and I never said they weren't my opinion has always been that it is wrong for us to be handing over an 'additional' £100m to help them whilst we are cutting funding elsewhere. Why can we find extra money for that but not for cancer drugs or housing the thousands of people on the waiting lists.

People on here openly saying they will open their doors and offer a room to them but will not do it for people right here who are homeless or on a waiting list? That is seriously fucked up to suddenly say a refugee can stay in your house but not someone in your own country who is just as in need of help.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 05/09/2015 15:15

Anybody who thinks Ebola might be a risk even with Africans trying to come here needs to get a map and look at the size of Africa.

It's mostly not affected by Ebola and the parts of Africa that most of the African refugees that are trying to get to the UK are from are a very long way apart from the parts affected by Ebola.

Moreshabbythanchic · 05/09/2015 15:17

If someone has a sinister motive for entering Europe what's to say they wont just disappear once they have arrived before being registered, it will be very hard to keep track of someone when there are thousands arriving every day.

Rarity08 · 05/09/2015 15:22

God some posts on this thread are so depressing. There's a humanitarian crisis, let's have some compassion for these dispossessed people.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 05/09/2015 15:27

Lil, you know very well your little anecdote was demonising Muslims - otherwise you wouldn't have posted it. If you're now saying "not all Muslims" - then what's your point? That some Muslims are sexist? Well, some Christians are sexist - some atheists are sexist. Heck, sexism is rife wherever I look.

Is that relevant to the need to look compassionately on a humanitarian disaster, caused by the civil war in Syria? No.

hattyhatter · 05/09/2015 15:27

I'm sure ISIS WILL try to sneak a few through in the mass movement of people moreshabby (and I'm sure the intelligence services are all over it).

It's not really a reason to turn our backs on a a humanitarian crisis of epic proportions, though, is it?

LilMissSunshine9 · 05/09/2015 15:32

My point was because posters upthread were saying Muslim sexism doesn't happen and wasn't real hence my example to show a real life example but this is the second time I am telling you why I posted it but you have selective reading and only choose to read what I write so no point in responding to you anymore since you don't actually want to read what I write just read what you want to so it backs up what you have to say.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 05/09/2015 15:34

Come on, Lil. You posted a nasty little anecdote - and you were called on it.

That's what we need to do to bigotry - call it out.

I find most religions are misogynistic, actually. It has no bearing on the absolute need for humanitarian aid to people suffering in war and persecution.

Seriouslyffs · 05/09/2015 15:35

What a depressing thread.
JuJu Let the rich and middle class integrate with migrants. Bring them in then at a higher level. would that happen? of course not.
Yeah, that's why you never meet a Jewish psychiatrist or Ugandan doctor or Pakistani optician or Indian pharmacist. Confused

Kampeki · 05/09/2015 15:36

Muslim sexism happens lil. So does Christian sexism, Hindu sexism, atheist sexism etc.

And your point is...?

emotionsecho · 05/09/2015 15:40

LilMiss 100m is a drop in the ocean of the money the UK Government spend annually on all manner of things, it wouldn't go very far on all the things you have listed as a better use for it. The Government have said an 'additional' 100m, but what budget has it come from? The aid budget by reallocating funds?

People in this country are not in immediate danger of being mortar shelled, crucified or beheaded, people fleeing Syria are and therefore the needs of the people in this country while pressing are not in any way comparable.

Moreshaby what's to say people who have a sinister motive for entering Europe are not already here and came via standard transport routes? IS are well funded they do not need to hide amongst refugees they can easily fly first class from one of the countries that funds them.

PuttingouthefirewithGasoline · 05/09/2015 15:41

It's not really a reason to turn our backs on a a humanitarian crisis of epic proportions, though, is it?

Not at all.

The whole world should be rallying to help.

Poster having concerns over various issues though does not mean they don't want to help, or think we should help.

emotionsecho · 05/09/2015 15:43

LilMiss no-one on this thread has said that Muslim sexism doesn't happen, they have said that it is not a reason to fear or disbar Syrian refugees from entering the country.

PuttingouthefirewithGasoline · 05/09/2015 15:51

Muslim sexism happens lil. So does Christian sexism, Hindu sexism, atheist sexism etc

And the last time a woman was stoned in Britain, Australia, France, Spain was......

www.takepart.com/article/2014/01/24/women-syria

Life before the war wasn't perfect, but Syrian women had relatively reasonable levels of independence in society, especially compared with their counterparts in the Arab world. The government boasted reduced penalties for honor killings targeting females, and women had to get permission from a male relative to travel abroad. But there was participation in public life through schools and working outside the home.

PuttingouthefirewithGasoline · 05/09/2015 15:52

they have said that it is not a reason to fear or disbar Syrian refugees from entering the country

Yes of course and equally no one has said - they should be barred. Confused

PuttingouthefirewithGasoline · 05/09/2015 15:55

as the Nazi army reached Belgium, the young Ralph Miliband (father of Ed and David) set off for the coast on foot with his dad. They left behind his mum and young sister, believing the journey would be too arduous for the girl. Miraculously, both mum and sister survived the Occupation in hiding

WTF??

your using that as an example of how its OK to leave women and children behind?

Makes me loathe them even more

"The road journey may be too arduous dear, so we will leave you to the programs and the Nazi's, being stripped and flogged and abused in the streets would be a far less arduous ordeal. But if your lucky you may be sent to the camps, even less fucking arduous" Confused

FFS Angry

emotionsecho · 05/09/2015 15:58

What thread are you reading Putting posters have definitely said they shouldn't be allowed to come to the UK.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 05/09/2015 15:59

Yes of course and equally no one has said - they should be barred.

Er - what thread are you reading? They have said exactly that: "Britain is closed," "we have no room" along with a whole load of rubbish that Enoch Powell would have probably been proud of.

AliceAlice1979 · 05/09/2015 16:01

Oh my goodness some of the crap on this thread from the first postings onwards is horrendous. These people are fleeing war, chemical weapons and other horrors. The ones who got to Hungary found dire conditions. The UK is late in the game welcoming far too few. My country depresses me but some posters here horrify me.

TheoriginalLEM · 05/09/2015 16:06

This is not the time to be waving a feminist fucking flag, really it isn't!!

Yes women and children have been left behind - look what happens when they try to leave? Its not a naice little trip on the eurostar to calais you know.

lovelyconverse123 · 05/09/2015 16:08

i started this thread to hear peoples calm and measured thoughts on the original AIBU topic.

It is inevitable that some posters will disagree with others views. However, everyone is entitled to hold and express their opinion.

I can't grasp how some posters cannot articulatley express themselves without resorting to the immature and playground tactic of name calling to others: racist, bigot, ignorant, thick etc. Shame on you if have resorted to the namecalling.

OP posts:
sleepyelectricsheep · 05/09/2015 16:12

PuttingouthefirewithGasoline no one knew what the outcome of staying or leaving would be.

How on earth can you read that story and feel anything but empathy for a family torn apart by war?

There is no implication none at all that they did anything other than take what they thought would be the best decisions for their family. You are adding an imaginary layer to the story that simply doesn't exist.

Talk about an empathy bypass.

Lemonfizzypop · 05/09/2015 16:13
