migrants - AIBU to wonder how this will all work out ?

lovelyconverse123 · 04/09/2015 20:27

My understanding of the migrant crisis is that the majority of the migrants are coming from countries which do not, in any way, share or support Western beliefs/values/way of life. They are now flooding into Western Europe in the hundreds of thousands. Nobody knows who they are or their background in their home country. AIBU to wonder what will be the result of this ?

They are fleeing war/violence etc. AIBU to wonder why, when they reach Hungary, which is a 'safe' country, (although economically depressed), is it not good enough and they are determined to reach Germany, UK, Austria etc ?

AIBU to wonder why the majority of these migrants feel it is acceptable to stampede through European law immigration procedures to reach their chosen country rather than wait and be correctly processed in the 'safe country they have landed in ? Surely if a person has landed in a 'safe' country, after witnessing goodness knows what in their home country, they should respect and adhere to the policies and procedures of that country ?

AIBU to wonder how this will all work out ?

I would like to hear your calm and measured thoughts please................

Some Muslim taxi drivers have refused to transport guide dogs

Such drivers will usually be prosecuted and also risk losing their cabbie's licence.

Lemonfizzypop · 05/09/2015 14:22

2) It is likely that a large number of these people will be damaged not just physically but also psychologically by what they have been through. This my well cause lot of social problems and expense.

Wow one of the most selfish vile reasons I've seen for not letting people flee here, stop seeing people in terms of their monetary value, it's sociopathic.

Cerseirys · 05/09/2015 14:24

That is true about Pakistanis but how can it be applied to Syrians too? Is it not possible that cousin marriage is a cultural rather than a religious thing?

And FWIW, the orthodox Jewish community in some parts of London have also married within their community to the extent that there apparently are some birth defects in babies born to them too. So why single out Muslims?

Lemonfizzypop · 05/09/2015 14:25

We know there are massive problems with sexism in Muslim countries. Of course people should debate and question whether its a good idea to allow people who practice vastly different way of living into the country.
And yet many people on this thread seem to be getting their info from the daily mail, one of the most sexist publications about.

Can't stand it when people get outraged about sexism only when it suits their racist agenda.

Cerseirys · 05/09/2015 14:25

And some white British cabbies have also refused to transport guide dogs. Where's the ire at that and the tarring of all white British with the same brush?

emotionsecho · 05/09/2015 14:25

Maddy if someone refuses point blank to listen when people contradict their alarmist statements with cold hard facts then the person making the statements is not here for a debate, they are merely trying to force their beliefs on others.

Yes people are entitled to an opinion and others are entitled to challenge the basis for that opinion.

DinosaursRoar · 05/09/2015 14:27

well, my knee jerk reaction would be to yes, bring people here, directly from the camps in Turkey in an orderly organised manner, not making them walk or take risky journeys to get here.

However, I'm aware that being someone living in a house I own, unlikely to move for another decade at least and not on a waiting list for social housing, with DC1 already in an outstanding primary school with DC2 therefore able to get a sibling place, with a DH who's in secure, highly skilled employment and unlikely to be competiting with incomers for work, I'm not really going to 'feel' the negative concequences of my instinct to help them. If council tax goes up a tenner a month, it'll be annoying but perfectly afforable for us. We arent going to compete, or suffer, or do without anything we won't miss.

I do'nt think those who will be paying the price for others' generosity should be shouted down as racists - even if on balance, I still think we should take some of the refugees.

Lemonfizzypop · 05/09/2015 14:27

Don't help people fleeing war! They might later not let you in a taxi with your dog!

Crikey, I mean, wtaf.

PuttingouthefirewithGasoline · 05/09/2015 14:31

www.gatestoneinstitute.org/5195/sweden-rape

This has just been posted on another thread by someone living in Netherlands.

Lemon I guess your oblivious to the struggle and plight of women living in Muslim countries then?

Pakistani cousins marrying has nothing to do with Syria but a poster mentioned it and was called a bigot.

That's not fair as it is an issue.

PuttingouthefirewithGasoline · 05/09/2015 14:34

So why single out Muslims?

I 'dont know, maybe the population is larger so the dc born with defects is larger? In the article many reasons are listed as to why its good thing to do.

Brits also inter marry but maybe not on the same scale and probably through falling in love than any wider reasons ie good for family?

ElizabethG81 · 05/09/2015 14:43

That article about rape in Sweden is ridiculous. It doesn't even consider any other reasons for the increase in rape cases, it's just all down to immigrants.

Lemonfizzypop · 05/09/2015 14:46

So in some cultures cousins marry (although we do not know if this is culturally true in Syria)..so...that means we shouldn't help out when there is refugee crisis? We just let them stay in Syria to get their heads chopped off? Even if you're worried about sexist men coming over (as if we don't have those here), what about the women? And the children?

Moreshabbythanchic · 05/09/2015 14:47

IS have threatened to flood Europe with its supporters, how can you not be worried about this? If these people are refusing to be registered how can we know who they are and what their motives are? I'm sure many of them are coming for a better life but when they deliberately remove their fingerprints, how can we be sure?

That is just one reason why many people are worried about this mass migration but I'm sure someone will call me racist for not wanting IS in this country.

Annwfyn · 05/09/2015 14:49

Something else I've been staggered by on this thead is a total lack of understanding that foreigners are not monolithic entitles.

Yes, some Jewish refugees in the 1930s were well educated and largely assimilated. Others were working class communist activists from Berlin (who were not that popular with the good citizens of Chipping Sodbury at the time) or elderly widows from Krakow, or maybe Yiddish speakers from the Ukraine. But you know what? They didn't deserve to die for that either.

And some of the Syrian refugees may not be educated. Some that I have read about were doctors or teachers. And even if they are not, they don't deserve to die. Human rights don't come after an entrance exam.

I'm also very frustrated by the assumption that "Muslim" is a single monolithic entity. People on this thread are talking about cousin marriage (a problem amongst some communities in South East Asia) and some of the excesses of Wahabi (Saudi and the Gulf) to justify their fear of refugees. It's like saying because the Christian church in Uganda is notoriously homophobic, an English Quaker like me is likely to attack gay people on the streets. It's ridiculous and pretty racist.

Lemonfizzypop · 05/09/2015 14:49

Yeah I'm pretty sure Isis were talking shit when they said that. Pretty pretty sure.

LilMissSunshine9 · 05/09/2015 14:52

Here is my real life example of Muslim sexism at university in 2005.

A group of us were close friends of which one of the guys was Muslim, he had a modern outlook i.e. followed his religion but not to the extreme. In my year were some other Muslim guys however 5 of them in particular held more extreme views. If my close Muslim friend saw them coming and I was with him my other friend would pull me away so he was not seen as to be hanging out with a women. If by accident we turned a corner and came across them again my other friend would pull me away whilst he spoke to them.

I asked my friend after it happened and he said that those guys held more extreme views and looked down on other Muslims who associated with women. They wouldn't even speak to females let alone be seen in the company of a female.

Once I was on my own walking through a building and they were walking towards me, saw me and turned around and quickly walked away just so they didn't have to pass me. These guys were British born Muslims as well.

emotionsecho · 05/09/2015 14:53

So those against refugees from Syria being brought into the UK are putting forward arguments that they shouldn't come here because:

Pakistani children have a proportionately higher rate of birth defects, which may or may not be due to inter marriage there is every chance it could be due to other factors relating to health and inherited genetics.

There has been an increase in rape in Sweden, which may or may not be due to immigration.

Many Africans are trying to come here and they may be carrying the Ebola virus.

Women in Muslim countries are subjugated.

Some taxi drivers have refused to take dogs in their taxis.

Well, that's damning evidence of the evils of the people fleeing the war torn hell hole that is Syria, isn't it.

Kampeki · 05/09/2015 14:55

This thread is an eye opener. It seems that Britain is indeed closed. Closed minds and closed hearts. How depressing!

I truly pity the people on this thread who are so filled with hate and bigotry. It must be very limiting to live in your sad little worlds. Too full of anger to reach out and help someone else in need. Too full of fear to recognise our common humanity.

How sad.

LilMissSunshine9 · 05/09/2015 14:58

I don't understand why people on here are taking it to the extreme that anyone against the refguees coming here means we want them die. No-one is saying that and no-one is saying they should be treated like those were in concentration camps. Saying we don't want them to come here doesn't mean we are condemning them to death. There are plenty of other countries they can claim asylum for and just like other countries we can say no as well.

IonaMumsnet · 05/09/2015 14:59

Just swinging by with a quick reminder that although we embrace debate on religion, we do draw the line at rudeness about and attacks on people of any faith and will delete those comments. And obviously the usual rules about PAs stand (even when they're aimed at a poster who is themselves transgressing guidelines)... sorry LEM. Wink

emotionsecho · 05/09/2015 15:00

The refugees who have reached Austria from Hungary are being registered and processed as we speak Moreshabby, for various reasons discussed earlier in this thread they did not want to register in Hungary, merely pass through. The rules and processes surrounding Schengen and the Dublin Agreement and how they have been interpreted are in some part causing the chaos.

ScOffasDyke · 05/09/2015 15:01

Actually, I didn't say refugees shouldn't come because some taxi drivers have refused to take guide dogs. I posted the links solely because some posters denied that this had happened.

Of course we need to accept refugees, but that doesn't negate concerns about integration, as well as about such practical issues as housing.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 05/09/2015 15:02

Stop demonising Muslims with stupid little anecdotes, Lil. It's pathetic.
