migrants - AIBU to wonder how this will all work out ?

My understanding of the migrant crisis is that the majority of the migrants are coming from countries which do not, in any way, share or support Western beliefs/values/way of life. They are now flooding into Western Europe in the hundreds of thousands. Nobody knows who they are or their background in their home country. AIBU to wonder what will be the result of this ?

They are fleeing war/violence etc. AIBU to wonder why, when they reach Hungary, which is a 'safe' country, (although economically depressed), is it not good enough and they are determined to reach Germany, UK, Austria etc ?

AIBU to wonder why the majority of these migrants feel it is acceptable to stampede through European law immigration procedures to reach their chosen country rather than wait and be correctly processed in the 'safe country they have landed in ? Surely if a person has landed in a 'safe' country, after witnessing goodness knows what in their home country, they should respect and adhere to the policies and procedures of that country ?

AIBU to wonder how this will all work out ?

I would like to hear your calm and measured thoughts please................

OK. I will say this first: my best friend is muslim. She comes from a very liberal, highly educated family. Many of her friends are international. However, she was born in a country that is quite diverse, and her parents are lovely, open people. But many who didn't have that sort of background - or have parents like hers - aren't like that. And she told me that. Her parents, for one, married against the wishes of the grandparents. Unheard of in many, more conservative (not extremist!) muslim families. So there are people like them out there. But not that many.

There's a reason why people from the Far East, for example, tend to be better at integrating. One go the reasons is that they often have no overbearing religion that tells them how to live their lives. This makes it easier to adopt western culture. If people have a strong link to their religion, where they uphold their religious rules and norms above the rules and norms go the country they're living in, there will be problems.

You will find that with Christianity, this isn't quite the case, although Christianity probably helped shape law in western countries all those years ago, so they're compatible.

Noomflah, which branch of Islam are you talking about here, exactly? Shia? Sunni? Others? Because there are major differences in approach and practice.

BoffinMum I'd love you to come over to the Middle East and pursue those ideals in public forum.

I'm advocating moderation and at the moment it looks like the UK may be heading for a largely unregulated and increasing influx of people whose values and ideology do not fit well. This issue being that large numbers of these people are not worldly wise and will only have their ideology to rely on. It's not a good mix and a risk to the stability of the nation.

BoffinMum · 05/09/2015 12:46

You are doing the equivalent of lumping together the C of E, Roman Catholicism, Plymouth Brethren, Baptists, Anabaptists, Amish, Eastern Orthodox church, Pentecostalism, Quakerism, Seventh Day Adventists, Unitarians, Latter Day Saints Church, Christian Scientists and Swedenborgians, and ascribing the same motivations and behaviours to the lot of them.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 05/09/2015 12:46

Yes, I am respectful of traditions, ideology, religion and the Laws of the land and do not encourage, demand or orate anything going against these, I am a guest in their Country so I give them the respect they deserve.

Europa, Are you not aware that Muslims living and working in the UK are doing the same? Or do you think they're all Abu Hamza?
Your posts are coming across as rather Islamophobic, are you aware of that? -which is surprising when you're living where you say you are.
Do you feel that Muslims where you live and work respect your way of life/religion?

emotionsecho · 05/09/2015 12:46

People talking about the UK taking in hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees, we're not and we haven't. The government has agreed to take thousands more but not put any numbers on how many and I very much doubt it will be anywhere near a hundred thousand, let alone hundreds of thousands.

The refugees in Hungary are not heading for the UK they are going to Germany.

I don't see only men, I see huge numbers of women and children, whole families traveling.

Those who say why aren't the Middle Eastern states such as Saudi Arabia taking them in, it is strongly suspected that Saudi Arabia has funded IS and that some of it's citizens still are. Do you know which branch of Islam the refugees adhere to? Why would they escape from one hideous extreme version of Islam (IS) to take shelter in Saudi which also follows a rigid and extreme version of Islam.

The sudden increase in movement of people has probably been prompted by a number of factors, the length of the civil war in Syria, the ongoing battle against IS - Kobane was retaken by the Kurds in January but IS attacked it again in June. IS are perilously close to the border of Turkey where the refugee camps are.

BoffinMum · 05/09/2015 12:48

I do have personal issues with Wahaabism, I will admit to that.

TheoriginalLEM · 05/09/2015 12:50

horrible

Noomflah · 05/09/2015 12:53

It's the Saudis who are funding most of the extremists and chaos right now but no one dare say it . One day it will have to be tackled but not whilst the rich of the worlds interests are tied up in each other .

Cerseirys · 05/09/2015 12:58

Those banging on about Muslims are aware that Syrian Christians are a significant minority in the country? Who's to say that some of the refugees aren't Christian? Not that their religion should really matter.

TheoriginalLEM · 05/09/2015 12:58

Sadly i think many people still share the OP's abhorrant attitude - i was at work yesterday and a client came out with a comment about not wanting to upset her DOG by exposing him to "immigrants" ok, she was half joking but fuck me!!! I couldn't repsond because this was her comment as she left and quite frankl i couldnt speak with my jaw on the floor. I was really angry that she said it to me in that sort of confidential, nudge nudge im sure you'll agree type manner. The poor bloke who came in and caught the back end of what she said copped for my ire with my muttering away as i was sorting his bill out etc looked a bit perplexed but with that attitude considered OK by perfectly "respectable" people i honestly despair. I wish my brain had worked faster so i could have put her in place but the only thing i could think of was "you ignorant cunt" which i think might have resulted in me being in a shed load of trouble.

MaddyinaPaddy · 05/09/2015 13:00

So once we have admitted out quota, do you think they will stop coming.Do you think the new ones will be any less desperate?

SansaryaAgain · 05/09/2015 13:01

Well obviously her dog is going to be upset TheOriginalLEM - very soon he'll be banned from taking taxis!

EuropaFanatic · 05/09/2015 13:03

BoffinMum for someone claiming to be as well educated as you say you are you are making some inflammatory and wild accusations, which, as I said, will not bait me because I'm extremely tolerant.

However, to your point, I'm not Islamophobic, I've said I admire their devotion to their cultural identity and Ideology, when anyone in the West appears to take the same devotion to their own cultural background it appears we are bigots, racists and islamophobic, it sounds like you are advocating double standards.

The Mulims I work with are great guys, we get on swimmingly because we respect each other but I take extra care to be respectful as I am a guest in their Country. This is a key point, individually most who I have met are wonderful people, but, the risk comes when you reach a critical mass of like minded people and the individuality disappears and mob mentality rules then that is a concern. The other key point is that we are talking about the critical mass occurring in Countries that do not typically subscribe to the same ideology, inevitably there will be clashes.

So do you believe the Birmingham Schools Trojan Horse plot to be a total fabrication or could it be the first example of when a group of people of the same ideology reach a sufficient number in sufficient positions of authority that they seek to impose their ideology?

Lemonfizzypop · 05/09/2015 13:04

Grin

That post about the dog free taxis was the highlight of the thread imo.

Your posts are coming across as rather Islamophobic, are you aware of that?

And if they are which they are not, so what?

We are allowed to dislike religions.

TheoriginalLEM · 05/09/2015 13:13

She was talking about taking her dog across to france. Grin

SnowBells · 05/09/2015 13:14

EuropeFanatic People tend to ignore the negatives, you know. They just want to think we live in some sort of utopia where everyone can live together in peaceful harmony.

As everyone can see, that's not what the world is like!

SansaryaAgain · 05/09/2015 13:14

Bloody immigrant dogs, going to France and stealing all their Pedigree and Pal...

Noomflah · 05/09/2015 13:15

Perhaps the reason "perfectly respectable" people are surprising you is that they have a point of view which is very widespread . There is huge valid concern over this and to breezily say welcome all is just pretty naive and bonkers given what we know. Yes it may be couched in terms you are uncomfortable with but people do feel uncomfortable, it's just another sign of our slide into 2nd world status as a nation, our infrastructure wages and quality of life has declined enough these last few years so you really think drawing in millions of uneducated poverty stricken 3rd world migrants is really going to all happy and light, like a coca cola advert ? Really? People are so fucking naive .

emotionsecho · 05/09/2015 13:16

Maddy we haven't set a quota. No, I don't think people will stop fleeing the horrors of Syria, but as has been repeatedly pointed out on this thread the vast majority of the refugees from Syria are in Turkey, Jordan and the Lebanon. The ones moving across Europe through Hungary are heading for Germany and Sweden, they are not heading en masse for the UK.

TheoriginalLEM · 05/09/2015 13:17

Why are people discussing religeon? WTAF has it got to do with this crisis? I don't see a muslim, i don't see a catholic, or fucking jedi, i see a human being.

I actually do have concerns that saying, right, we are going to let x amount in will cause people to take even more risks to get here and wonder if the answer is to take people directly from Syria? Is that possible i wonder?

emotionsecho · 05/09/2015 13:18

We are very far from saying "all welcome".

TheoriginalLEM · 05/09/2015 13:19

Sansaryagain I doubt that the french dogs eat junk food like pedigree and pal! only the finest filet steak for them!
