migrants - AIBU to wonder how this will all work out ?

lovelyconverse123 · 04/09/2015 20:27

My understanding of the migrant crisis is that the majority of the migrants are coming from countries which do not, in any way, share or support Western beliefs/values/way of life. They are now flooding into Western Europe in the hundreds of thousands. Nobody knows who they are or their background in their home country. AIBU to wonder what will be the result of this ?

They are fleeing war/violence etc. AIBU to wonder why, when they reach Hungary, which is a 'safe' country, (although economically depressed), is it not good enough and they are determined to reach Germany, UK, Austria etc ?

AIBU to wonder why the majority of these migrants feel it is acceptable to stampede through European law immigration procedures to reach their chosen country rather than wait and be correctly processed in the 'safe country they have landed in ? Surely if a person has landed in a 'safe' country, after witnessing goodness knows what in their home country, they should respect and adhere to the policies and procedures of that country ?

AIBU to wonder how this will all work out ?

I would like to hear your calm and measured thoughts please................

It will be interesting to read the threads on here once this actually starts to affect the comfortable middle classes in their leafy suburbs or those of you in high income jobs living in your million pound houses is Islington.

Unfortunately us plebs on low income jobs Iiving in less desirable areas are already feeling it on the ground. I too am a NMW worker and it will be interesting to see if I can actually get a job when I start applying again in a few years once DC2 is in childcare.

Moreshabbythanchic · 05/09/2015 09:16

It is already happening here, do you go around with your eyes shut or maybe you don't live where I do.

liletsthepink · 05/09/2015 09:17

Op, YANBU

As soon as anyone raises the very valid concerns that you have mentioned everyone shouts 'they are poor refugees!'. If this is true and they are truly desperate then why leave your family behind in such a dangerous place and why be so very keen to leave Hungary?

It isn't considered pc to say it, but if we take in everyone who wants to emigrate here there are bound to be a few criminals among them along with many who will never integrate into a western way of life. You can't really compare this wave of migrants/refugees to the Jews who escaped the pogroms and holacaust as they were mainly educated, liberal minded and very quick to adapt to the British way of life within a generation of being here.

Moreshabbythanchic · 05/09/2015 09:19

I have been called a white whore and spat at whilst waiting in the street for my DH. Now tell me that isn't racist, I am 65 yrs old ffs.

Cerseirys · 05/09/2015 09:20

Where do you live then shabby? You keep saying that the Muslims have taken over but I live in London and yes, some areas have a large Asian population but then others are predominantly Jewish or Afro-Caribbean or Turkish or white middle class. To me, this makes a multicultural city and I certainly don't feel that one race is "taking over".

SansaryaAgain · 05/09/2015 09:21

I've been called names and harassed on the street occasionally, as have my friends. The majority of the time it was white British louts.

fastdaytears · 05/09/2015 09:21

I obviously don't know where you live but I do not walk around with my eyes shut and I live in an area with a significant number of first generation migrants/immigrants/refugees (I do not ask their status) as well as more established 2nd and 3rd generation and have not been noticeably affected by any extremism. We are a well integrated community and everything actually seems like it might be fine. Our biggest primary school teaches children with 52 different first languages (I am a bit Hmm at that as it seems a LOT) and gets great results.

Cerseirys · 05/09/2015 09:22

I've been called a "Paki" once (despite not actually being Pakistani) and strangely enough, it wasn't a Muslim who said it...

fastdaytears · 05/09/2015 09:23

I have been called a white whore and spat at whilst waiting in the street for my DH. Now tell me that isn't racist, I am 65 yrs old ffs. this is awful and I am sorry it happened to you but it does not make it a widespread problem or one linked to one race/religion.

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 05/09/2015 09:24

I live in Huntingdon and 85% of voices I now hear in the Supermarket, High Street and playgrounds are Eastern European.

msgrinch · 05/09/2015 09:26

I've been called all sorts of disgusting names, only by young English men and I live in an area with a huge migrant population.

PuttingouthefirewithGasoline · 05/09/2015 09:26

EuropaFanatic

Has your name come from the Theme park Europa?

I think you make valid points and don't see how anyone can discount them as daily mail?

Being christian does not affect all parts of daily life, being a muslim however does. Its a totally different set up.

CoteDAzur · 05/09/2015 09:30

Garrick - re "Turkey doesn't recognise Kurds (many of the people fleeing Syria, including the Kurdi family) as having a home country, hence it refuses to process visas for them."

Sorry Garrick but this is a complete misrepresentation of the situation. These refugees come from SYRIA. Turkey has no problem recognising their country of origin & nationality.

(And if they were from Iraqi Kurdistan, they would be citizens of Iraq - again, no problem recognising where they are from.)

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 05/09/2015 09:34

I'll also just add that if migration (be it economic or refugees) is allowed to continue unabated I believe the country will vote to leave the EU next year.

I was correct about a Conservative majority when the majority of threads on here were Labour supporting and I believe I will be right about the referendum (again even though the majority of these threads get populated by Liberal posters who believe we should allow refuge to everyone and his dog).

mollie123 · 05/09/2015 09:39

apologies for putting my head above the parapet
I have vast sympathy for those fleeing the Syrian civil war and there is a danger that those who deserve help are being overtaken by those who are less deserving (not undeserving but less deserving if I can make that clear)
it has been reported that there is a black market for fake Syrian passports - could this be part of the traffickers plans to get more money from desperate people?

Hoobles · 05/09/2015 09:43

Must be nice to be middle class, well educated and well off. Sitting on your lofty perches telling other people that they're thick and bigoted for not welcoming immigration while not acknowledging the fact that your economic status and education shelter you from the effects, and that other people's experiences are 'Daily Mail soundbites' because that's your only experience of them.

Samcro · 05/09/2015 09:46

its a game of wait and see
wait and see how people feel when their council tax goes up
when they can't get their child into a good school cos of the increase in LAC
when the housing shortage gets worse.
when they become disabled or ill and find the benefits they thought would be there arn't.
then we will see how the "open the borders to all" people will feel.

Lemonfizzypop · 05/09/2015 09:47

Hungary vehemently do not want them there, would you stay somewhere no one wants you?

And your last paragraph is not "un-PC", it is racist, purely racist. Sweeping generalisations about them being undecided? racist.

There are quite a few criminals in this country too by the way, some of them are even white!

Lemonfizzypop · 05/09/2015 09:47

Uneducated, not undecided. #autocorrect

Macadaamia · 05/09/2015 09:48

This will be the governments justification for further benefits cuts. Well, the public all wanted to bring in more and more.... So this is how we will afford it. More cuts.... With a get out clause

AnnaForbes · 05/09/2015 09:49

Op, yanbu. I am concerned on many levels such as economic, cultural, terrorism and public health. There are so many people flooding into Europe it is impossible to properly check them all. I think it will end in eventual disaster.and I agree with previous posters stating only some are refugees. Many are economic migrants.

LilMissSunshine9 · 05/09/2015 09:49

I c no one replied to my question why they won't help homeless ppl on the street and offer them a room when they are happy to openly offer a room for a Syrian refugee.......

Samcro · 05/09/2015 09:51

Macadaamia i agree\the well off will not be paying for this, yet they seem the most vocal.

Moreshabbythanchic · 05/09/2015 09:55

I live in the east of England, we have very many nationalities living here, mostly polite and friendly. my lovely DDIL is from another country, I have no problem at all with these people living and working here. The only negative experience I have had is from this one group of people and yes, it has affected my views but I treat as I find. This does not make me thick or racist.

hattyhatter · 05/09/2015 09:56

Has anyone done the calculations of how many refugees we should shelter adjusted for land mass and populations size of the UK proportionate to other EU countries. It might forestall some of the criticism.

I suspect, calculated that way, we're still not pulling our weight this time around.
