So my sister was surprised that we eat fast food/takeaway once a week every friday. We usually have fish and chips, dominos, Mcdonalds or KFC, the dc usually have an chocolate bar or sweet item the same night. None of us are overweight and dc have very healthy diet during the week.

Aibu to think most families do this.

I don't really like most takeaway food, unless it's a really good curry. Otherwise I feel sort of dirty after eating it, and not in a good way. I make pizza once a week though (not being smug, it's a piece of piss to make pizza and much cheaper than even a Dominos offer) so we do have that.

InsurgentisFab · 19/08/2015 07:42

Actually OP I think we would if DH would agree to it Smile. But he's very health conscious (gym for 10 hours a week - idiot... Wink) but we do still have one fairly regularly. Maybe once or twice a month.

I have to say though that my favourite fast food is Indian, but I don't like it as a takeaway, it never seems to taste the same as eating out, even when it's from the same place.

So I started eating the Asda curries and they are amazing, just as good as a restaurant one (in my very humble opinion). It's still more expensive than your normal evening meal but if you are smallish eaters and go by the instructions (ie one between two), you can have the main dish, rice, poppadums, chutneys and naan for just over ?5.

Sorry... just rambled...

MummyPig24 · 19/08/2015 07:42

We don't, probably have a takeaway every 4-6 weeks and one Mcdonalds in the same time frame. But that's cos we don't have much spare money and have other things to spend it on.

BlueberryWafer · 19/08/2015 07:43

OP you keep saying "we're all normal weights" but that doesn't mean your insides are healthy. All the salt etc in the takeaways is what I'd be worried about , and sugar especially if they're having sweets as well.

Cooroo · 19/08/2015 07:44

Once or twice a year here. Too expensive.

allthegirlsinspain · 19/08/2015 07:50

Once every 2-3 months in this house (myself, DH and DS's 7 & 5). Either chicken chow mein and prawn crackers from the chinese or Domino's £20 meal deal. A couple of times a year DH and i might share a set meal from thr indian takeaway but i'll cook separately for the boys then as they're not keen.
As a family we eat out every 3-4 weeks on average.

KumiOri · 19/08/2015 07:51

we don't.
but we have frozen pizza once a week when dc have clubs and we are home late.

honeyandfizz · 19/08/2015 07:52

We do too - usually curry, Chinese or fish & chips. Yummmmy!

Roussette · 19/08/2015 08:04

The only sort of takeaway we get is fish and chips about twice a year because we have a good one near us and don't do it more often because we like a glass of wine of a weekend so CBA to drive.

I've had one McD's in about 20 years and would rather stick hot pins in myself than have one again - why do the advertisements show one thing and what you are given looks totally different. Flabby sweet rolls filled with a grey burger, no thank you. I've never had a takeaway pizza in my life - the prices are astronomical, isn't it about £20 for one large pizza? I'd rather buy from the supermarket.

However a good indian, yes yes yes. I love an indian and it's a special treat to have one but I do make my own curries and can't be bothered to go and get one most of the time.

StrumpersPlunkett · 19/08/2015 08:06

We don't have a take away each week but we eat lunch out every other Saturday. Never uncle Donald's or kfc type thing though just via we prefer to have Thai or dim sum.

hmc · 19/08/2015 08:11

Once a week for us to avoid cooking. Although takeaway food is often unhealthy with too much fat / sugar / additives, once per week will have absolutely no adverse health consequence if for all your other meals you follow an otherwise healthy diet of unprocessed food, low in sugar with plenty of fresh vegetables and lean protein. I find it quite ludicrous to suggest otherwise.

Having said that, I find that I don't enjoy my weekly takeaway because it does taste pretty cruddy, and am thinking of doing more batch cooking for the freezer so that I can still have a night or two off cooking but have something to eat that I can enjoy

cariadlet · 19/08/2015 08:21

Friday night is Indian takeaway night in our house - I love not having to cook at the end of the week.

HearTheThunderRoar · 19/08/2015 08:22

One a week here, every Thursday (pay day!) though it's only me and DD so I can understand the cost aspect if your a family of 4/5 etc.

Ours takeaways can vary from Japanese, Indian, Mcd's, KFC, pizza, kebabs, salads / wraps. Thai is so expensive where we live so it's saved for birthdays and neither me or DD are fans of Chinese.

We always do homemade fish and chips on a Sunday night.

Trickydecision · 19/08/2015 08:24

I am always amazed at the number of oeople eating takeaways regularly, despite being, quite clearly, on low incomes.
We are not hard up, but it never crosses our minds to have a takeaway. I suppose the nearest we get is room service in hotels and even then only if it is included.

Kampeki · 19/08/2015 08:31

No, we have takeaway once in a blue moon - maybe one or two times a year at most. However, we do go out to eat from time to time.

ProfYaffle · 19/08/2015 08:39

We don't have takeaway very often but do eat out at least once a week. I agree with pp that it's one of those things that's not unusual in rl but no-one on mn would admit to.

Mummybare · 19/08/2015 08:42

We hardly ever get takeaway. We do eat out once a week-ish, though. Usually Prezzo or Pizza Express or something so I don't think you're being unreasonable.

Hygellig · 19/08/2015 08:50

I don't think it is unusual but we nearly never have takeaways. We have a takeout pizza once in a while (usually Tuesday as that's when there's a bogof deal).

micromachine · 19/08/2015 08:51

You can still have healthy insides and eat out a lot. I have low chloestrol and apparently runners blood pressure. I have always eaten out a lot. My mum eats out daily! She is also very healthy and slim for her age.

chaiselounger · 19/08/2015 09:04

Not that often.
Suspect that MN is not a true representation of how often the average school aged children family has a take away.

CheeseAndBeans · 19/08/2015 09:07

We don't, purely for financial reasons. It's so expensive. We have takeaway once a month on payday, usually chinese, Indian or fish and chips once DD is in bed.
We do treat her and us to a McDonald's (shock, horror!) maybe once a month if we are out for the day and not back in time to cook tea.
Growing up Friday night was always fish and chip night! Would love to do it more but just can't justify the cost.

PurpleBananaPie · 19/08/2015 09:10

Yes, every week usually on a Saturday. Would be a chinese or indian rather than KFC/McDonalds/Domines though, I don't tend to eat those more than once or twice a year.

Justtrying · 19/08/2015 09:10

Probably 3 a month here, mostly Indian from a restaurant not a take away, sometimes Chinese chippy. I work long shifts and after 16 hours out of the house and back out in 8 hours it's sometimes a life saver. Dd tends to eat earlier but has a couple of happy meals a month as a treat, but has loads of healthy food otherwise.

I think it's all about everything in moderation.

Mysillydog · 19/08/2015 09:17

I don't cook on a Friday. We usually have fish and chips. 3 portions feeds four people. We don't do McD's, KFC etc though because their food isn't nice, and I think fish is healthier. The kids like Domino's but I think their pizza tastes of cardboard. We have a curry 3-4 times a year, but prefer to eat that out.

MaxieMouse · 19/08/2015 09:18

We go to McDonald's once every couple of months if we are out and the kids are hungry. Takeaway maybe twice a year, it's just not our thing. Not having takeaways doesn't necessarily mean we eat healthy, there's plenty of shop bought food that doesn't do our insides any favours.
