AIBU?

Smoking.

On holiday at the moment, 10 adults and 10 children. 5 of the adults smoke. It's ridiculous, they are chain smoking all freaking day.

AIBU that they stop whilst we are on vacation, or at least cut down? They are smoking on the balcony, which is the main place to sit.

Is it just me, or is this so rude/ antisocial? And so bad for the health! Not to mention there are kids involved too.

YABU. The smokers are smoking outside. Yes, there are kids. If you don't want yours exposed to it, stop them going out there.

BackInTheRealWorld · 16/08/2015 00:17

God help them more like.
Show them this thread, you'll never have to holiday with them again.

WorraLiberty · 16/08/2015 00:20

What they said ^

If you are able to afford a house that accommodates 20 then you can find a place to sit and quit your whinging. Seriously. You are being ridiculous and that's coming from someone who complained about people smoking beside their car. (With good reason though)

PaulAnkaTheDog · 16/08/2015 00:27

To be fair to op, bbq smoke is lovely. As is wood burning and cigar smoke. Mmmmmmmm

WorraLiberty · 16/08/2015 00:29

In your opinion Paul

My neighbours would tell you differently

PaulAnkaTheDog · 16/08/2015 00:31

Hmmmm Worra?

BuggersMuddle · 16/08/2015 00:51

Umm, bit difficult OP since you didn't set ground rules before departing. If it's genuinely where you all eat, / main place to sit you could suggest smoking on another balcony I suppose, but I suspect they think they are being fairly polite (and tbh, by gathering on only one outside area in a house with grounds and 3 balconies, they probably are trying to be fairly considerate).

Depends on your holiday type really. If hanging about the balcony is a major thing and you're there for a few weeks then trying to get them off the main balcony might be worthwhile. If not (and tbh unless it's a really big deal), I'd keep your powder dry and set some ground rules for future holidays.

Fuck the smoking sils turned up with 2 boyfriends Shock Grin Shock

Tell me more

Oysterbabe · 16/08/2015 05:59

I would hate it and would also drop kick anyone who lit up near my child. But I don't think there's much you can do. Maybe ask if they wouldn't mind making one of the other balconies the smoking balcony especially if the other non smokers are uncomfortable too.

Cat2014 · 16/08/2015 06:51

I think you're getting an unfair flaming here op. They sound inconsiderate and should go further away to smoke.

Cat2014 · 16/08/2015 06:52

And Grin red shoe I thought the same!

Of course they're not going to but down smoking whilst on holiday! It's their pleasure, if anything they'll smoke more.

Why would you deprive yourself on holiday? Hmm like drinking less, or going on diet

LavenderLeigh · 16/08/2015 08:04

Use one of the two other balconies as you clearly dislike these people.
Or continue seething and setting up the "them and us camps" that seem to be developing. It will certainly add an interesting dimension to the holiday and may even ensure these folk never want to see you ever again.
Which sounds exactly what you want.

Sirzy · 16/08/2015 08:10

I dislike smoking and have a child made ill by cigarette smoke but I still wouldn't object to smokers smoking outside in an area of a big house which is easily avoided if needed.

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/08/2015 08:44

Think Worra has arsey kill joy neighbours who have complained about her having a BBQ, Paul.

Gotta love those sorts of neighbours.

hiddenhome · 16/08/2015 09:18

25 cigarettes a day doesn't constitute 'chain smoking'.

You knew they smoked, so why go on holiday with them?

specialsubject · 16/08/2015 10:34

smokers don't generally tend to have functioning legs or noses, and cannot walk away/downwind to stink up. At least that is how it appears.

you could ask them to smoke away from the house and downwind, but I wouldn't hope for much as it is also a very selfish addiction. They simply will not get how disgusting it is.

and it is their holiday too, and it isn't illegal.

so if that reasonable request is refused, you are stuffed really. Sorry.

any chance of the five of you who like fresh air moving house?

PaulAnkaTheDog · 16/08/2015 11:54

That's what I thought Ali just wanted to check Grin

MrsCs · 16/08/2015 11:57

It's a disgusting and smelly habit arm all of the children with super soakers and pay them a £1 to ruin every smoking moment!!

WorraLiberty · 16/08/2015 12:02

No, she was complaining about another neighbour's wood burner Grin

But Paul stated "To be fair to op, bbq smoke is lovely. As is wood burning and cigar smoke. Mmmmmmmm"

And it's obviously a matter of opinion because I personally really don't like cigar smoke.

Funinthesun15 · 16/08/2015 12:04

They are on one of 3 patios....

Most addictions are selfish, that is the nature of them. In this instance I don'the think they are being.

I get the impression OP would complain wherever they were.
