Have you travelled alone?

OP posts:

I’ve travelled to loads of places on and off the beaten track. Depends what you mean by worst?

Had to listen to gunfire and smelt teargas in Nepal, I also got charged for looking at a dead italian tourist there as well.

Couldn’t leave the hotel after dark in Papua New Guinea.
Had to travel by taxi after dark in large parts of Africa.
Witnessed extreme poverty in Bangladesh.
Had to listen to extreme racism in rural Australia.
Been robbed in Egypt.
Got into a fight with a tiny taxi driver in Vietnam.
Was bored in New Zealand.
Was trapped by rioting in a hotel in India for three days. Anyone want to come on holiday with me??

The only place I don’t want to go back to??? Dubai. If you really want to go to Dubai for the shopping then what I suggest you do is look at the stuff in the high street and add 25%

Best - Barcelona, Lisbon, Berlin, Amsterdam and I did actually really enjoy Paris which seems rare!
Worst - Dublin. Dull, overpriced, no atmosphere, full of people vomiting and pro-life protesters.

PassMeTheFrazzlesPlease · 12/08/2015 21:22

Best - Bali. For lots of reasons, but the local people were a big reason. So welcoming.

Worst - Barbados. Because of the local people. Rude, moody, hostile attitude towards tourists. Almost without exception: Not a nice atmosphere there.

dontcallmelen · 12/08/2015 21:26

Havent travelled alone for many years
Best Italy lakes, Florence, Verona, Capri love all of it
Sicily
St.lucia, Antigua,Cuba especially Havana, Maldives, Menorca
Northern Cyprus
Not so keen Thailand & Dom rep
Worst Cape Verde dreadful place, barren full of flies.
Epygt constant harassment felt very unsafe.

tvlover1234 · 12/08/2015 21:28

Best new Zealand.

Worst Hong Kong

dontcallmelen · 12/08/2015 21:29

Forgot India sort of loved & hated it, people were lovely, scenery amazing but the poverty & treatment of some was depressing & very upsetting.

SacredHeart · 12/08/2015 21:41

My favourite places -
Mexico - the people were amazing and so conscious of looking after their country's natural resources.
Poland - Warsaw and Zakopane in summer it is beautiful and winter was magical.
Cyprus - hot, beautiful country with a lovely vineyards.

Least favourite
Northern Ireland - the people were rude and miserable (disappointing after going to Ireland so many times)
Turkey and Tunisia- beautiful places but I got way too much attention from men (even wearing very modest clothing) which made me uneasy.

SiobhanSharpe · 12/08/2015 22:00

Italy best and worst. Puglia - lovely but Naples - shithole. Tuscany beautiful but coast v. polluted. Alto Adige, favourite region, stunning.

Japan best; Toyko wonderful, familiar yet different, 100 pct safe.
Hong Kong best; vibrant, in-your-face, can be dirty but fascinating and fun.

Vietnam - real culture shock, hated it at first, terrified of the traffic. Wonderful food including good bread and croissants!.

Gambia - sad place, sex tourists, grinding poverty and Campylobacter. Would not go again.

Croatia, Dubrovnik beautiful but overrun with shore parties off enormous floating hotels cruise ships that arrive daily with thousands of people on board. Food OK, Italian influenced but somehow doesn't quite cut it. Scenery stupendous and the Adriatic is amazing shade of blue, lovely to swim in.

Best - Northern Spain, Cantabria and the Basque Country. Cities like Granada and Seville very cool. Barcelona spoilt by pickpockets.

Travelled and lived on my own in Johannesburg years ago apartheid era and had a flat in the equivalent of Soho which was lively and social/racially mixed then, reasonably safe, but hear it's more dangerous now. Would not go back to Joburg but on a return trip to other parts I found lots of S.Africa changed for the better. Bits of Durban and Cape Town still dodgy, though.

WantToGetLost · 12/08/2015 22:09

Seems Japan and Hong kong are a must. Might avoid Dubai I know it's gotten very towie

BolshierAyraStark · 12/08/2015 22:13

Loved Cuba, Kenya, Zanzibar & Maldives. Can't honestly think of a place I've been that I've disliked let alone hated.

LoadsaBlusher · 12/08/2015 22:22

Best place - Thailand
Travelled alone and with friends , felt safe , loved the food, the weather , the culture. Loved the big cities as much as the beach resorts.
Ko Phi Phi blew me away though - gorgeous.

I don't really have a ' worst' -
Some resorts in Turkey felt a bit " leery " with men staring
Also felt the same in Egypt - leery ( is that even a word!) verging on rudeness at times.

Hezaire · 12/08/2015 22:28

Vancouver. Love it. Better than New York. Beautiful

storytopper · 12/08/2015 22:31

Worst: Tunisia - only there for a short time on a cruise but encountered the pushiest shopkeepers and most aggressive hustlers ever.

Loved the art and architecture in Rome, Venice and Florence but hated the rip-off merchants.

Some rude and grumpy people in Poland and Lithuania - also some nice and friendly.

Love the Italian Lakes, Greece, Turkey (not some of the leery men) and absolutely adore Portugal.

MothershipG · 12/08/2015 22:44

I'm a nervous traveller so prefer places where I can communicate and feel safe, so particularly the USA.

A couple of PPs have listed Malta under 'worst', I'd be interested to know why? I love it there but maybe because I'm half Maltese. Grin

BolshierAyraStark · 12/08/2015 22:51

Surprised how many have listed Tunisia as a worst, I really liked it, I wasn't alone though so maybe that's the difference.

Theresadogonyourballs · 12/08/2015 22:58

Best - Australia, (but haven't been back in 24 years, can't afford it!), and France, but only the Alps and the Côte d'Azur. Northern France is a soulless place.
Worst - Cork at the height of the foot and mouth crisis. Everything was shut, it pissed with rain every day and everyone was a miserable bastard. I had anti English abuse shouted at me in the street by a bunch of little kids. Put me off going back to Ireland I'm afraid.

SamJohnsonsBoy · 12/08/2015 22:58

Best: Norway - incredible scenery.

Worst: Wales - ugly caravan sites and tatty gift shops everywhere.

Littlecaf · 12/08/2015 22:59

Loved Croatia. Could live there. Please take me back to Korcula. Bosnia, the cultural hub of Sarajevo was also beautiful. I loved Istanbul too.

We spent a day in Marmaris. Never again. Awful, tacky. Denmark was interesting in hindsight, but as a 14 year old, Ebeltoft was not the most exciting place.

Casperthefriendlyspook · 12/08/2015 23:00

Travelled alone a lot, and DP and I backpacked around the world together when we first met too...
Difficult to narrow down, but love NZ (DPs home), Vietnam, Cambodia, Namibia, Japan, France, Greece, Croatia.
I've never hated somewhere I've been, but wouldn't go back to NYC (disappointed and underwhelmed) or Dubai (bored bored bored).
Hoping to make it to South America as soon as the DCs are a tiny bit older (and my health improves). Argentina and Cuba are on the hitlist. Smile

5446 · 12/08/2015 23:02

Hated Morocco and Bali (Actually Kuta - loved Seminyak).

Loved Aus, Zanzibar, Cambodia, Malaysia and Japan.

Loved Singapore at first but became rapidly boring with self-obsessed, vacuous people.

Currently in SA which I am enjoying, Africa time is something to behold.

Lookingforwardtoholiday · 12/08/2015 23:05

Love: Thailand, New York & Mallorca

Didn't like
Malta, we tried so hard but it was just dullsville, LA, so disappointing, Portugal, was desperate to like it, travelled quite extensively and just didn't find anything appealing other than it being v cheap, really wouldn't go back.

pomegranatesandfilms · 12/08/2015 23:10

I hate being a tourist.

pomegranatesandfilms · 12/08/2015 23:14

Sorry.

Best: Turkey a road trip from Istanbul to the coast around Canakkale.

Worst: Wales.

SamJohnsonsBoy · 12/08/2015 23:16

Someone mentioned cities in a previous post.

Best: London - never found any city to beat it. Food, shopping, movies, booze - you name it.

Worst: Oslo. Dull as ditchwater and once you've seen the viking ships (altho' they are amazing), you've seen everything it has to offer.

pingoose · 12/08/2015 23:28

Best - New Orleans, St Petersburg, Whistler
Worst - Atlanta. Only place I've felt unsafe as a single traveller, and so so boring.
