Have you travelled alone?

Venezuela . An absolute shithole of a country under its current rulers. Dangerous , dirty, corrupt to the core, no rule of law. Don't bother visiting it . Cheap beer and petrol though and some lovely beaches .

Ineedmorewine · 12/08/2015 11:36

Best: Verona. Like Rome but less touristy, cheaper and easy to get to other places from.

Worst: London. Dirty horrible place.

Yokohamajojo · 12/08/2015 11:36

Not very well traveled but have loved
Las Vegas, California, New York, Stockholm and Copenhagen

Did not like - One specific holiday in Gran Canaria, more that the whole holiday was a bit crap, bad weather, got robbed, cockroaches, cold pool etc still love Spain as a country and going there on Friday

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 12/08/2015 11:57

^Oh god Croatia. Best looking bad tempered people in the world.
And the food- terrible.^
Agreed about food.

Saurus72 · 12/08/2015 12:12

vivalabeaver yes, we went to Slovenia a few years ago - stayed in Ljubljana and did day trips including to Bled, one if the most beautiful places I've ever been. It was great and would highly recommend!

RooftopCat · 12/08/2015 12:17

Best: France, Canada, Italy, NZ, Australia, Germany
Worst: Gibraltar - exploring the Rock was good but the rest- it's like one big horrible duty free shop

winterinmadeira · 12/08/2015 12:19

Oh I loved Lake Bled.

Best places: Australia and Madeira
Worst place: Cyprus

VivaLeBeaver · 12/08/2015 12:22

Thank you Saurus and winter. Id been looking at photos of Lake Bled and it does look beautiful.

herethereandeverywhere · 12/08/2015 12:24

Best - Namibia and California USA
Worst - Antigua (what a waste of a long-haul flight...)

RandomFriend · 12/08/2015 12:24

Best places traveling alone: Warsaw; Vienna; Germany.

Worst places: Cairo and Tunisia.

BadLad · 12/08/2015 12:25

To live:

Best - Dubai
Worst - Kenya, Kuwait

To visit:

Best - Germany, Vietnam
Worst - Paris (found other places in France to be fine), Ireland

Mimigolightly · 12/08/2015 12:27

Best: Singapore, especially if you're alone as it's very safe, clean, etc

Worst: Bahamas - a lot of racism towards white people and I never felt safe when I left the hotel.

Lordofmyflies · 12/08/2015 12:34

Best : Canada and surprisingly Jordan. I never felt threatened and recieved a warm, respectful welcome throughout the country.

Worst: Egypt, Dubai and Turkey

swimmerforlife · 12/08/2015 12:36

Best: New England (especially Boston), Australia (esp Melbourne and Sunshine Coast), Canada, St Lucia.

Worst: Bali, Tunisa and I was bored shitless in Singapore.

Queeltie · 12/08/2015 12:42

Best Iceland and Croatia.
Worst Italy.

OnlyLovers · 12/08/2015 12:45

I feel quite ambivalent about most of the places I've been.

For example, had some frustrating and upsetting experiences in India, but the place got under my skin and into my heart and I long to go back.

Barcelona: three people attempted to pickpocket me in as many days, but I loved the sea, the architecture, parks and weather and the people more generally.

Japan: weirdly dull considering it's so different from the UK. But I still feel fond of it.

USA: very mixed – hated cliched rude waiting staff and the number of soulless strip malls, but love the landscape and the culture in general.

I found Sydney very underwhelming and provincial, TBH. Liked Melbourne a lot, though.

Lj8893 · 12/08/2015 12:47

I'm not very well travelled and haven't hated anywhere, and have loved places for all different reasons!

Loved Marrakech but didn't rate Agadir.

ephemeralfairy · 12/08/2015 12:47

Russia was dodgy. Infrastructure not great and felt vulnerable at times as a woman. St Petersburg and Moscow are amazing cities but expensive. Food not great either. Animal rights non-existent, saw some very upsetting things. Cheap beer though :-)

Mongolia I loved. Nice people, countryside stunning.

China...mindblowing. But of course human rights issues very dodgy. Police/border guards officious.

BritabroadinAsia · 12/08/2015 12:54

MrsTerry, you should go to Xian for the terracotta warriors and a cycle around the city walls. There are a few other sights worth seeing but a long weekend should suffice. Also want to visit Chengdu and Guilin.

ShanghaiDiva · 12/08/2015 13:01

Worst -
Oslo - mind numbingly dull and expensive
St Petersburg - unsafe
Anywhere in the Chinese countryside is normally a complete shithole - I live there so feel I can be blunt!
Best -
Laos
New Zealand - probably the best country on the planet
Western Australia
Vietnam
Cambodia

MoralityPlay · 12/08/2015 13:04

Hated India - it is a beautiful and interesting place with an incredible vibrancy but it's ruined by poverty, crime and dishonesty that effects everything. The caste system is beyond awful. As a tourist its just depressing and hard work. I was only there three weeks, maybe I was unlucky with what I saw.

I've been to plenty of other countries with the same 'qualities' such as Madagascar, Thailand and Peru but somehow they were still ok to visit.

My favourite country was Chile. It has everything and enough home comforts and proper infrastructure to make it enjoyable. The Atacama desert is fab.

I also loved Scandinavia in general and Namibia , Zambia and South Africa.

I haven't holidayed on my own.

Iflyaway · 12/08/2015 13:10

For the poster afraid to travel alone....

solotravelerblog.com/

I've travelled solo to loads of countries and loved all of them.

Jamaica, Brazil, Cuba, Kenya, Tanzania, Mali, Senegal, Bali.

No worst countries, but a couple of nasty experiences - Morocco, a guy tried to follow me into the toilet, luckily I slammed the door in his hopefully balls face.

And in the only muslim town in Sri Lanka I was in. Hmm. Luckily my anger kicked in and I had him quivering. Grin

Coffeemarkone · 12/08/2015 13:10

Best - all parts of Greece
Worst - Argassi in Zakynthos. Horrible dirty beach and psychotically rude locals.

I'm probably the only person ever to say this but worst - Norway. It seemed to have the word of all worlds, being at many times dirty, unfriendly, rude and with poor infrastructure, and always expensive. I do think if a place is so expensive, the quality of what you get should be good.

Best - pretty much everywhere else I've visited, inc the rest of Scandinavia. But id never go somewhere that women are restricted. I like to hire a car on holiday and drive, or a bicycle.
