Have you travelled alone?

Worst: France. Threatened with rape in Paris. On a return visit years later to Normandy just found people very rude and intolerant of people who weren't fluent.

Best: Spain. Lovely friendly people, gorgeous scenery.

Weebirdie · 11/08/2015 19:25

Ive always loved Italy. Its the only country I want to travel around as apposed to just going to one place at a time. I fancy inter-railing around Italy.

Im going inter-railing with my friend next May. We're going to France, Spain, Switzerland and Italy. We'll be away for a month. I'll be 58 and she'll be just turned 70. We say we are doing the glamping version of backpacking so we'll have a suitcase with wheels on it instead of a backpack, we'll do first class seating instead of squeezing on a bus, and last but not least we'll do AirB&B or nice hotels instead of hostels.

We're looking forward to it.

misssmilla1 · 11/08/2015 19:26

Yes, travelled alone quite a bit in the last 10 years.
Best: toss up between Chile and Peru
Worst: India, Vegas

haveabreakhaveakitkat · 11/08/2015 19:27

Drharleen..

I agree about NYC. I was so excited to finally go there but felt really let down and don't think I'll be hurrying back. London is wonderful in comparison.

Loved Florida. Clearwater is stunning and Orlando is everything I'd hoped. We're planning a Florida road trip as we want to see more.

borisgudanov · 11/08/2015 19:27

Worst is Morocco. There's nothing quite like getting the threepenny bits in a place with no bogs and where nobody will lift a little finger for you without baksheesh.

Best? Probably Norway, Sognefjorden and Jotunheimen and up north with the midnight sun. Also Switzerland, Iceland and Austria.

Funnily enough being a language scholar makes me uncomfortable in places where I don't know the language. A monoglot would feel the same in France and in Finland, I suppose.

LazyLohan · 11/08/2015 19:29

Best: Germany, Greece, U.S., Albania, Netherlands, Russia, Tanzania

Worst: Gambia, Egypt, India, South Africa

theQuibbler · 11/08/2015 19:36

I travelled a lot my own pre children and loved it.
First trip on my own was to New York and I had a wonderful time, so that holds a special allure.

Best places: Southern India, Cambodia
Least liked - wasn't too keen on Cairo, though parts of it were amazing. Had to spend some time in Phuket before getting a boat and it was horrible. Washington and Brussels both shit, but was for work, so might just be that.

laffymeal · 11/08/2015 19:38

Why was Scotland so bad???Hmm

londonrach · 11/08/2015 19:39

Love Germany and Belgium by the way. Amsterdam was a surprise and a disappointment as though i see what anne frank said in her diary not men Weeing in front of us eating a sandwich. France is ok-ish. Over priced compared to Germany and food is france can be good to terrible! (Mostly terrible. Bosnia and Croatia photo. Cant find my bay photo. We stayed on the street where ww1 started. Some guy got killed.

Celticlassie · 11/08/2015 19:42

I've travelled alone a lot.

Best: Cambodia, Laos, Hong Kong.

Worst: I hated Kuala Lumpur and didn't particularly enjoy Durham!

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/08/2015 19:42

Worst: LA. Utter steaming shit hole. No sidewalks, rip off merchants and dirty, violent and persnickety.

Best: Laos and New Zealand. And China.

lovelylara · 11/08/2015 19:42

Best: New Zealand and Canada - both were relatively easy and I felt safe.

DidoTheDodo · 11/08/2015 19:43

Best: Cornwall ( OK,not an actual country). It's beautiful and has fab cream teas
Worst: Scotland, much anti English sentiment directed at me, and the midges.

pretend · 11/08/2015 19:47

Yes I've travelled alone but most people's worst places are my best places.

I like off the beaten track. I've enjoyed iran, Tajikistan, Borneo, parts of India, Mali, Uganda....

Didn't like New Zealand (boring), Thailand (crass) or Cambodia (weird atmosphere), although I'm sure there are areas of all those countries which I liked more than others.

Frankly I'll go round the corner if I've never been before. I'm planing to start travelling with the kids once the youngest hits 5 or 6.

GetTheFudgeOutOfRodge · 11/08/2015 19:47

Best - Japan
Worst - Hmm, the place I've liked the least is Paris but I don't want to say France Confused

Muskey · 11/08/2015 19:49

I loved Orlando hated Miami. I loved Austria, Venice, Rome, Florence. I hated Spain but loved Tenerife. I love the Greek Islands wasn't that keen on Athens although that could be down to the really bad food poisoning I got there. I loved Zimbabwe but really hated Kenya , Zambia and The Gambia. I liked New England. France and Germany are good but I didn't get Belgium.

pretend · 11/08/2015 19:49

Oh yes I didn't like SA either. And Namibia was also odd. Odd unfriendly people (generalisation)

confusedandemployed · 11/08/2015 19:50

Best: Reunion Island. Technically a French overseas departement but far enough removed to be very different. Stunning place and I got to see an erupting volcano close up.

Worst: Kos. I generally love Greece but Kos when I was there in about 1994 was a total shithole.

Muskey · 11/08/2015 19:53

Sorry I forgot to mention I loved most of Canada but really hated Quebec especially Montreal. We know you guys speak English so stop pretending you dont

Caitmous · 11/08/2015 19:54

Best - Slovakia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Ghana, west coast Oz.

Worst - northern Vietnam, Prague, KL, Paris

Mostly set off alone but soon met wonderful people to travel with

magimedi · 11/08/2015 19:55

Best: Turkey & Italy.

Worst: Croatia

MissMuffetisin · 11/08/2015 19:58

Most of you seem to be judging a whole country from your experience in one resort .

TenForward82 · 11/08/2015 19:58

musky I'm Canadian (from the English-speaking part), and I can confidently say most of Canada agrees with you.
