Have you travelled alone?

OP posts:
NowSissyThatWalk · 12/08/2015 13:39

Best: Brussels, New York

Worst: Dublin - So expensive

SueDunome · 12/08/2015 13:46

Best: Spain and Cape Verde

Worst: I've never really been anywhere I disliked

skinnysoyvanillalatte · 12/08/2015 13:53

Best : Sweden, Australia
Worst: Ireland

Yes, I have travelled alone.

PootlingBee · 12/08/2015 14:08

Worst: Paris. I wasn't expecting the graffiti and massive amounts of litter. Las Vegas. I hated everything about it.

Best: Road trip around the west coast of America. Lots of places. I also loved Kracow, it was what I expected Paris to be.

ihatethecold · 12/08/2015 14:46

Best is the gulf coast in Florida, just love it there so much
Barcelona. lots to do and see, great peoplewatching on the beach.
Valencia, cheap and very spanish, food was a bit shite though.
Boston, like new york without the madness.
Italy, Rome is amazing, Not so keen on Florence although it holds a place in my heart for romantic reasons.
Cornwall, great beaches, pubs, villages, apart from when its raining!

Worst for me is Venice, too hot and too many stairs with a pushchair, plus it was overpriced.
Tunisia about 20 years ago. I got hassled as a young single mother.

Glad to hear people like Sardinia, I'm going next week, I cant wait!

Scotland is great. Also Ireland. Loved New York and San Francisco.

muminhants1 · 12/08/2015 15:07

I tend to avoid places that I think I won't like because they are too hot or have too many insects, or too many restrictions on western women etc.

My favourite country is Germany although I also very much like Finland and Norway (interesting someone says above poor infrastructure, I though it was an incredibly well organised country but that was in the late 90s and I only stayed in and around Oslo).

My favourite city is Vienna.

My favourite place for a holiday is Jersey closely followed by Scotland. I'm not a hot weather person as you can probably tell, but I've generally had decent weather in Scotland.

The least favourite place I have visited is probably Spain but only because I can't cope with the very late eating times. The people I encountered in Seville and Madrid were very friendly and welcoming.

besttalk · 12/08/2015 15:09

Best: Monterey, California

Worst: Basel, Switzerland

adinfinitum · 12/08/2015 15:34

I travel a lot by myself, usually 2-3 months every year and I've done 3 6-18 month stints of backpacking.

Best countries: Bolivia, Cuba, Canada, Peru, Argentina, New Zealand, Nepal, Botswana, Croatia, Italy, Iceland, Laos, Belize

Favourite cities: Havana, Vancouver, Cuzco

Worst: Dubai, Victoria Falls (the town, not the actual falls), Washington DC, Phuket, San Pedro Sula (Honduras) - I don't think I've ever been to an entire country I disliked, just these particular places

Getthewonderwebout · 12/08/2015 15:36

Best: NYC

Worst: Bulgaria and France

I liked nearly all of the places that people have listed as their worst ones!!

Binkybix · 12/08/2015 18:22

I love LA too! DH lived out there so we knew lots of locals etc, which gave a different perspective. Also he lived on Venice Beach.

Slovenia is incredible. Bovic is a good base for outdoorsy things. Plus they had a bar called the Pink Panter :)

Not a great fan of Dublin or Portugal.

pineapplecrush · 12/08/2015 18:29

Best Italy, France and America.

Worst - Tunisia (only holiday I've been on where people at our hotel were asking to fly home, this was in late eighties).

BestIsWest · 12/08/2015 18:32

Worst - Croatia again. Such a beautiful place but we were there just before the war broke out and someone tried to run us over. It was a very strange time.

Slovenia was beautiful.

BestIsWest · 12/08/2015 18:33

I love Portugal though.

HayDayRookie · 12/08/2015 18:45

Best: Argentina
Worst: Malta
Travelled through both alone.

JackSkellington · 12/08/2015 19:21

I would say my favourites so far are Spain and Canada. Worst I would say the parts of Turkey I've visited and London - love the city itself but found the people to be generally rude and not very friendly. I do think England is a great holiday destination too, the parts we've been to in the north and midlands (Birmingham, Manchester, Yorkshire, etc...) have been great and the people were absolutely lovely.

JackSkellington · 12/08/2015 19:23

Oh and I have travelled alone, both within the UK and abroad. :) I'd like to see more of the UK though, being in Scotland I plan to see more of the country as and when and visit northern Ireland and Wales, as I've never been there.

Providore · 12/08/2015 19:28

Best: Botswana. The Okovango Delta is one of the most magical places on earth.

Worst: Pakistan. Probably my expectations to blame here. I thought it would be a bit like India. It's sooooooo not.

areyoubeingserviced · 12/08/2015 19:37

Istanbul is great

Rainbunny · 12/08/2015 20:04

LondonRach - I'm so surprised to hear of your Banff experience? Is there a castle in Banff? Are you thinking of the Chateau Fairmont hotel at Lake Louise? If you were attacked because you spoke English, what language were the attackers speaking? French? I've never heard anyone speak anything but English there and Quebec is on the other side of the country. I don't mean to doubt your experience, I'm just so surprised!

WetAugust · 12/08/2015 20:13

Best. Sicily. Just gorgeous

Worst. Morocco

Didn't feel safe alone in Morocco or central Athens

nannyafrica · 12/08/2015 20:18
