Have you travelled alone?

OP posts:
GoooRooo · 11/08/2015 20:20

pretend Sydney is as dull as ditch water. I spent three weeks too long there.

londonrach · 11/08/2015 20:21

Mrs terry. No idea. Horrible place. Left in tears in our hired car. We got attacked as we were english not french in the street. Theres a museum telling you how much they hate the english. I will never set foot in this town, city again despite its stunning castle. Its the main reason i dont want to visit canada again. Apart from banff we found everyone in canada were very helpful to two very young travellors with no money. We got adopted by various families and fed and cared for. My best day in my life was in canada..whale watching and hot tub under the stars in a our bed and breakfast after amazing fish meal.

pretend · 11/08/2015 20:21

So true Terry.

I did some trekking in the Fan mountains and a couple of weeks of truly hard travel. Eventually we got to a hotel, which, as the only water source in the bathroom, had a plastic pipe jutting a foot out of the wall at waist level.

It also had all the hot water you could need. I sat on the floor to shower and it was bloody bliss Smile

RedRowanBerries · 11/08/2015 20:28

Was it Montreal rather than Banff?

Banff is English speaking with a hotel disguised as a castle.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/08/2015 20:29

london sorry you had that experience. Sad

MsMcWoodle · 11/08/2015 20:31

Australia. Shit. Unpleasant people and you can't swim anywhere cos of the beasties.
Bali. Even shitter.
Not telling you the good ones.

Mitzi50 · 11/08/2015 20:33

Best Cuba and Australia

Worst Tenerife and South Africa

MiracletoCome · 11/08/2015 20:38

Disliked - Tunisia, Turkey

Liked - Iceland.

Alicekeach · 11/08/2015 20:38

Worst: Los Angeles, dirty, rough, too big to get round easily, traffic jams, never felt safe. Didn't like the food in Poland although the country was beautiful.

Best: Venice, Urbino, in fact most of Italy. Also love France, Austria and Germany. Love west coast USA, apart from LA. Also love exploring different bits of the UK.

pieceofpurplesky · 11/08/2015 20:38

Worst city Brussels (loved Bruge), didn't like parts of Tunisia, but other parts were beautiful and really didn't get Munich.

Best cities are Valencia (and the surrounding areas), Sydney for the Wow factor as a young backpacker and Amsterdam. Best country Italy

fourtothedozen · 11/08/2015 20:39

Best was Bandas - Spice Islands in Indonesia or Seychelles.
Worst I'd rather not say.

londonrach · 11/08/2015 20:39

It was scary terry but we got rescured by a bed a breakfast owner who decided to mother us as the young people we were and im afraid we lapped it up as we needed her at that time as we were frigthened, far from home and very tried. She cooked us a evening meal and sat and listened and talked to us.

poppybell · 11/08/2015 20:41

Love traveling on my own, really miss it now I've DCs.

Best: Algeria, Fiji, Kenya, New Zealand, NYC

Worst: Vienna was dull. Hua Hin in Thailand was a horrible tack-fest full of dodgy old male sex tourists. Malia in Crete - I was 22 and mostly drunk but still thought it was an utter dive.

todgerthedodger · 11/08/2015 20:41

Best City: New York

Worst: Benidorm. My hopes weren't high but my god, what a shithole.

Saurus72 · 11/08/2015 20:42

I'm going to do cities not countries:

Worst: Marrakech, absolutely hands down. Hated it. Dirty, stinking cesspit - we stayed in a most beautiful riad and it got so bad whenever we ventured outside that on the last day we just stayed in the riad - couldn't handle any more hassle/donkey pee. Confused. Didn't like Berlin very much either - quite bleak, tho DH loved it. Dublin - dullsville, provincial, nothing to do.

Best: Istanbul - fabulous, love love love. Seville - gorgeous and loads to do. Ljubljana - just beautiful and quite quirky. Chicago - brilliant, proper big city.

FarFromAnyRoad · 11/08/2015 20:43

Best - Florence, Rome, Venice, Puglian coast, Cape Town, Pilanesburg
Worst - Naples. I can't think of anywhere that even comes close to as bad as Naples!

AnotherTimeMaybe · 11/08/2015 20:44

Best Bora Bora, Hawaii
Worst Dubai, barbados

Pepperonipeteczar · 11/08/2015 20:45

Worst by far SAN ANTONIO (vile)
Best was Morzine or Geneva

Strokethefurrywall · 11/08/2015 20:48

Best: NYC, Western Australia, Bali, Malaysia, Chiang Mai, Borneo

Worst: Cuba (felt I had to go because I live a 40 minute flight away. Twas shit, especially at 6 months pregnant),
Bangkok,
Koh Phangan. Full of 18 year olds getting fucked up on weird pills and barfing.
Surfer's Paradise
Brisbane
LA

CelticPromise · 11/08/2015 20:49

Best- Fiji. I went alone and loved it. Also Costa Rica and New Zealand.

I had a crap time in Adelaide. I don't blame Australia though.

londonrach · 11/08/2015 20:50

Saurs..agree with dublin. No food and soooo boring. Montreal- We got food poisoning. Dont ever eat yogurt if not from a fridge. Even just on ice...forget it. Believe me two weeks of your life will be saved. Remember we found the city underground having walked around trying to find it above ground. Looked back even the bad bits of our travels were part of the experience. (Did write in nasty banff musuem reviews how upset we were). Dont you love travelling..even if you had a bad time you can say from first hand experience what you think.

Siennasun · 11/08/2015 20:52

I don't think I've ever been anywhere I really hated but I'm in no hurry to go back to anywhere in North Afruca or the Middle East

Best: Italy, all of it but especially Lombardia and Sardinia, Mauritius, London, Hong Kong (but love most big East Asisn cities), Paris, The Alps....

I've lived in lots of different countries so spent a lot of time travelling alone but I would never travel alone for fun.

googoodolly · 11/08/2015 20:52

Best - Singapore, Switzerland, Austria, Canada.
Worst - Germany, Norway.

I've travelled alone plenty of times.

googoodolly · 11/08/2015 20:53

Celtic Adelaide is pretty boring. There are nicer places in Australia! Adelaide is very dull imo. I prefer Melbourne although that's pretty controversial in itself.

Poofus · 11/08/2015 20:54

Worst: Pakistan (was nearly killed in Peshawar)
Best: far too many to list, including many in Asia, but I have a particular soft spot for Slovenia. Lovely place.
