Have you travelled alone?

Best: Australia, the Valencia region of Spain, the Greek Islands and The Ardeche area of France.

Worst: Tunisia, hands down. Even worse than Paris or Tenerife. I wasn't keen on Athens either, but that might have been the company I kept at the time!

pretend · 11/08/2015 19:58

You don't say?!

I posted mine wondering how long it would take someone to post that Smile

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/08/2015 19:59

That's interesting confused because I tend to like places the French have either colonised or have départements. Vietnam, Laos, Rwanda, Guadeloupe and Martinique (and they had some influence in Yunnan, which I LOVED). I think it's the combination of just being excellent countries but also having decent bread and coffee. Possibly the French only ground really beautiful, interesting countries under their colonial heel.

I'm such a poncy, annoying traveler. I fancy Madagascar and Shanghai as well.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 11/08/2015 20:00

Worst: Morocco (Tangiers specifically).

Best: Cyprus, Greece.

I also really like Malta & Tenerife. Gambia was OK, but nothing special. Kenya was great but I was only 16 when I went there, I fear I may have been too young to appreciate it fully! And now Mombassa isn't particularly safe to holiday in is it?

Have also been to other European resorts which were absolutely fine places to spend a holiday. Not outstandingly beautiful or bad.

pretend · 11/08/2015 20:02

Agree with you Terry Smile

I travelled round India at 22 thanking God for the British Raj. Road signs in English and buttered toast were a godsend...

thehypocritesoaf · 11/08/2015 20:07

No worst and way too many bests to chose...

Italy, japan, USA, Nepal,...

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/08/2015 20:08

I travelled round India at 22 thanking God for the British Raj. Under your breath of course. Grin I just can't do forrin breakfast. I know it's a character flaw and I'm a terrible person but I don't want congee or fish curry or mealie-meal. I want toast, tea/coffee and eggs.

I have to say I wandered around China so happy to be a a decent tea culture.

StillFrankie · 11/08/2015 20:09

Best: USA, England (I'm scottish), holland, Italy

Worst: western isles (boring!), Croatia (also boring and didn't feel safe either), Cyprus (just too hot)

londonrach · 11/08/2015 20:10

Just remembered hated french canada..banff. We got attacked in the street as we talked english. Theres a museum in the centre of banff which tells you how much the people in banff hate the english. Never again.

eurochick · 11/08/2015 20:13

Best - Borneo, closely followed by the Maldives

Worst - Cuba (some cool stuff but generally grubby and broken) and Egypt (lots of cool stuff but filthy, full of annoying people tying to rip you off and the security (armed guards on tourist buses, scanners at hotel entrances) don't make you feel particularly welcome!)

londonrach · 11/08/2015 20:13

Miss muffetisin..ive never been in a resort. We stay in bed and breakfast or local hotels.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/08/2015 20:13

Banff isn't French Canada, is it? It's Alberta.

Flaperon · 11/08/2015 20:14

Worst: Tunisia. An absolute shithole.

Best: South Africa, Greece, UAE, Italy.

Seasidedolly · 11/08/2015 20:14

Best: San Diego & NYC

Worst: Barbados. I was so disappointed. It was barren, flat, run down, dirty, neglected. The beach outside our hotel had a huge collection of seaweed which had floated over from West Africa, it was so high you couldn't actually get to the sea. Bridgetown was also very run down and you get the same sort of hassle from shop workers as you get in Turkey, even the high end shops like Tiffany.

I'd rather save a fortune (and the jet lag) and go to Tenerife for a week.

GoooRooo · 11/08/2015 20:14

Best places were New York, Hong Kong, Cape Town and Hisaronu in Turkey

Worst were Cyprus and Sydney

GoooRooo · 11/08/2015 20:15

Oh yeah. Hated Dominican Republic too.

pretend · 11/08/2015 20:16

Sydney??!! What!!?? Grin

Mind you, I hated Melbourne. And I have a difficult relationship with Airlie Beach.

pretend · 11/08/2015 20:17

Love the grumpiness on this thread... "I went on holiday and I fucking hated it" SmileSmile

trollkonor · 11/08/2015 20:17

I've travelled quite a bit on my own and lived abroad as a single person. I wouldn't ever write off an entire country and I've found interest in nearly every place, even if there's been difficult aspects.

Except LA, I've been several times and realy don't get the fuss, its one of the few places that I actively dislike.

GozerTheGozerian · 11/08/2015 20:19

Loved - Nepal, Laos, Thailand, USA, New Zealand

Hated - India (except Rajasthan)

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/08/2015 20:19

I always think that's the thing with grungy backpacking. When something shit happens, it's a good story. When you are 'on holiday' you want everything to be nice. Pay $10 a night; expect some shite. Pay $200 a night; expect high standards. Low expectations and cheap travel is the way to go.

meglet · 11/08/2015 20:19

mrsterry yy to the breakfasts in India Grin . I put the fact I didn't get ill down to scoffing huge continental breakfasts every morning. I was only there for a week.

China didn't do continental breakfasts half as well.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/08/2015 20:20

So with you troll. So with you. I can find joy in chicken gristle and seeing rats in a restaurant. I can't make myself like LA.
