easy jet won't replace my ipad that they broke on the hold

I had a short flight with easy jet. However I was told as boarding the plane my hand luggage would have to go on the hold. I said I couldn't do this as was carrying delicate and fragile items (musical equipment). They told me I had no choice.

So I took on board what I could hold in my hands and the rest had to go on the hold. Every thing was fine apart from my iPad. Cracked screen so unusable.

I've been chasing them for 4 months and still they count it as resolved and won't replace it for me. Aibu to think that they should.

noneed for travel insurance

And the broken iPad hasn't in any way proved to you that this assumption is wrong...?

bestguess23 · 05/08/2015 17:11

This conversation has strayed quite significantly. If you have the money to cover eventualities of course you don't have to travel with insurance, it's a choice. Repatriation and costs associated with your death can be paid directly from the bank account of the deceased. We repatriated my MIL from Mexico using funds from her accounts, all above board. This scaremongering is not helpful. Yes, travel insurance is sensible but it's a broken iPad, no one died and no one was hurt.

SoupDragon · 05/08/2015 17:14

But this is EasyJets fault

How is it EasyJet's fault that someone did not remove a fragile item from their completely opaque suitcase before checking it into the hold?

I'm curious as to what items the OP deemed essential for a flight from Paris that meant she was unable to carry an iPad.

Roussette · 05/08/2015 17:15

This is not Easyjet's fault! How can it be? The OP will have been asked to take out all valuables before the luggage was put in the hold. I know they do this. I have seen it happen many a time. The OP decided to leave her iPad in her luggage and the screen got broken. She hasn't a hope in hell's chance of getting compensation for that.

StarlingMurmuration · 05/08/2015 17:17

A friend fractured his spine skiing on the continent - after a lengthy hospital stay, he had to be shipped home either in first class/on a special plane because he had to lie flat - if he hadn't had insurance, it would have beggared him (can't remember the salt details, it was years ago). So now I always buy it, even for a couple of nights away. It can be as little as a tenner for a night or two.

I can't believe the responses OP is getting. Even if she had insurance why should she even pay the excess? Easy jet broke her I pad.

If the check in lady asked to see if and dropped it on the floor would you cheerily say "not to worry mill claim on my insurance hey?" No way! I'd be getting easy jet to claim on theirs because their employee broke my property and the same applies here. Easy jet are being arseholes

Sallyhasleftthebuilding · 05/08/2015 17:23

Repatriation is about 4k - if you need assistance flying its more like 15k, plus additional expence of hotels/meals if there is on going treatment. You will also lose your flight and have to pay for that aswell. If your luggage is lost your looking at finding £500 to get clothes etc. Passports are a nightmare, so would spending money if stolen. Think of the solicitor advise, and specialists that help that you would need to employ. Then theres your house hold insurance, how would you replace that if theres a fire... you would lose everything.

SoupDragon · 05/08/2015 17:24

Easy jet broke her I pad.

Because she was too stupid to take it out of her suitcase.

SoupDragon · 05/08/2015 17:25

Let's say she left her iPad on the pavement. A person on a mobility scooter doesn't see it and runs over it, cracking the screen.

Whose fault is the broken iPad?

Artandco · 05/08/2015 17:25

Insurance is standard nowadays. We get worldwide cover for myself, Dh and x2 children for £12 a month. That's £40ish a year each. We travel on average 5 times a month, so 60 times a year.

We have claimed suitcase losses, missed flights, hotels, medical expenses all on that £144 a year.

For example our flight home from Rome was cancelled. Our insurance covered x4 new flights, 2 more nights accommodation in our hotel, x2 days food expenses, and x2 days loss of income.

Roussette · 05/08/2015 17:28

Easyjet did not break her iPad by dropping it on the floor. Easyjet asked her to remove her valuables and take them on the plane where they would be safe. She chose not to. Would you pack a hold suitcase with your iPad on the top? No. She had the option to look after it and she left it in her case. A risk that didn't work out

BlisterFace · 05/08/2015 17:28

OP I think you would find that even if you did have travel insurance you would not be covered for this. I mistakenly left my iPad in the bag I checked in and it was damaged. Insurance wouldn't cover me because I foolishly left it in the hold bag. (I think they said they treat iPads in the hold as "abandoned" but my memory is a bit fuzzy...)
Might not help but if Easyjet tries to push you on to insurers (if you had one) you might want to raise this. Unfortunately they will probably just tell you that you should have put it in your cabin bag Confused

Ilovecrapcrafts · 05/08/2015 17:29

Hold on a sec - why are people assuming anything breakable in the hold will be broken and it's OPs own stupid fault for not realising that?

Don't you expect baggage handlers to attempt to keep your belongings intact? I certainly do. I've never had a thing broken. It's as though breakage is inevitable and should be expected. It certainly should not.

SoupDragon · 05/08/2015 17:30

Would you pack a delicate China vase into a suitcase and expect it to arrive intact at the other end?

Nonnainglese · 05/08/2015 17:31

Regarding EHIC the little it actually covers can be frightening.

Friends went to Tenerife, the wife tripped up on uneven pavement and broke her hip. Husband had to find more accommodation after holiday ended, arrange three seats for her on new flights, ambulance this end to home (the NHS won't do it!) on top of hospital and surgery costs etc.
Total cost? Just over £28,000 and that was with EHIC. Lucky for them they had single trip insurance costing £19.
We have annual cover for £35. Very cheap all things considered.

Ilovecrapcrafts · 05/08/2015 17:32

But OP couldn't put anything in her cabin bag. She couldn't take on a cabin bag. They made her check it in because they ran out of space

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 05/08/2015 17:32

Not really Ilove I expect baggage handlers to be under pressure, and they don't normally handle baggage with kid gloves, and I therefore wouldn't risk anything breakable unless well wrapped. When it comes out in the baggage area it rattles and bumps around on the conveyor belt.

Ilovecrapcrafts · 05/08/2015 17:33

Soup dragon- people transport delicate items every day of the week. Equipment for sports and business, delicate items being shipped here to buyers, all sorts. Of course they don't all turn up broken

specialsubject · 05/08/2015 17:34

nothing fragile should ever be in the hold - bags get chucked around, the handlers are NOT careful. They do not have time to be so. The OP took too much cabin luggage and so had to put something fragile in the hold. Expensive lesson learned. But no-one bankrupt.

Roussette · 05/08/2015 17:34

This is from CAB.

^Most airlines say in their written terms and conditions that they won't accept responsibility for carrying certain items. These can include:
valuables, such as cameras, camcorders, mobile phones, laptops, documents or jewellery^

Just as I expected TBH.

SoupDragon · 05/08/2015 17:35

But OP couldn't put anything in her cabin bag. She couldn't take on a cabin bag. They made her check it in because they ran out of space

And she chose to leave something that is known to be fragile to be checked into the hold.

I have never been on a flight where I would have been able to carry my necessary items in my hand, including iPad, kindle, phone, purse and travel documents. Even long haul.

Roussette · 05/08/2015 17:35

Which is WHY she will have been asked to take those items out of her hand luggage that had to be put in the hold. She didn't.

Roussette · 05/08/2015 17:36

I have Soup. They've even given me a carrier bag to put the stuff in.
