easy jet won't replace my ipad that they broke on the hold

I had a short flight with easy jet. However I was told as boarding the plane my hand luggage would have to go on the hold. I said I couldn't do this as was carrying delicate and fragile items (musical equipment). They told me I had no choice.

So I took on board what I could hold in my hands and the rest had to go on the hold. Every thing was fine apart from my iPad. Cracked screen so unusable.

I've been chasing them for 4 months and still they count it as resolved and won't replace it for me. Aibu to think that they should.

The idea that insurance pays for any daft mishap you have outside the uk is naive in the extreme

I think everyone realises that. If travel insurance was purely to cover belongings I might not bother - I don't have lots of fancy gadgets or an expensive camera etc. But I have it to provide cover in the event of a serious illness/accident because that's when you will REALLY need it.

tobysmum77 · 06/08/2015 09:54

John the thread is about an ipad, not repatriation. But on your point insurance does not cover you for accidents in many situations either. I'm sure you never drink alcohol on holiday or go on a jetski/ hire a moped but lots of people do.

And the responses at the start of the thread rather suggest to me that many people do think insurance covers them for every daft mishap!

JohnCusacksWife · 06/08/2015 10:04

Tobysmum, a lot of the comments about insurance have arisen in response to the OP's comments that she never takes out travel insurance as she only travels in the EU so doesn't need it. Many people have pointed out very valid reasons for having it. That's the way conversations go - they meander and don't always have to remain limited to a single point.

And yes I do understand that my policy may not cover me in every single eventuality.

tobysmum77 · 06/08/2015 10:09

fine, but I'm choosing to stick to the point Wink

LIZS · 06/08/2015 10:18

Tobysmum the point is that insurance might have been an appropriate route to recouping some of the cost but that is not an option for op. Whether it ultimately would have covered this circumstance is a moot point.

The OP was about EJ and the broken screen originally but then because pp's suggested claiming on insurance, it did indeed meander!

I would never claim for losing a device or anything with possessions, most policies have an excess and it isn't worth it, I only get it for the sort of thing that hopefully will never happen in my lifetime, but my rellie probably said that too when he was repatriated back to the UK. Luckily he had insurance

KittensOnAPlane · 06/08/2015 10:59

again, I claimed for 2 broken phones and an ereader that i broke by 'shoving my bag under the seat in front of me" so, i could really have been negligent, it was totally my fault - and got a payout, so i would say you would have been able to claim on your insurance

"Also I hardly ever get travel insurance. If I got it every time I travelled, I'd have paid WAY above the value of anything I own in insurance fees. "
Really - you never take anything away that adds up to more than about £100? which is a top end guesstimate of an annual insurance policy? in fact my bank account has travel ins & break down cover and 2 phones insurance for £17 a month - so thats £204 annually, take off £60? for breakdown, and then thats still about £144 - your smart phone would cost more than that to replace, add on your baggage (the actual suitcase) and you're looking at more than that?

schokolade · 06/08/2015 11:22

Again, not everyone lives in the UK Kittens. But still, I rarely take anything of value because even the times I've had insurance they won't bloody cough up.

19lottie82 · 06/08/2015 11:26

I'm sorry but you should have taken out travel insurance and claimed on that. Assuming the airline will cover a situation like this isn't realistic.

PLEASE take out travel insurance in future, something MUCH worse than this could happen.

HappilyMarriedExpat · 06/08/2015 11:40

The point is that without any insurance, there isn't a cat in hell's chance of OP getting anywhere with claiming for an ipad when she left it in a bag that had to be put in the hold.

This is true, but if you put an iPad in the hold, the chances of an insurer paying out only increase to about 0.000001%!

I haven't read all of the thread so I don't know if it has been mentioned. Easyjet has two different sizes for hand luggage and the bigger size may have to go in the hold if there is no space.

Yes it has. many times.

ilovesooty · 06/08/2015 12:07

What's an "antidotal"?

As someone else said, who on earth would travel without a printout of their travel insurance policy?

BertieBotts · 06/08/2015 20:54

Anecdote I expect.

How bloody clever and well informed of you. Isn't it nice to be better than everybody else?

BertieBotts · 06/08/2015 20:56

Sorry probably a bit harsh. But I am sick of everyone being all "OMG, what heathen would not even think to have travel insurance?!"

Lots of people don't. It doesn't mean you should act all shocked and like they are total idiots for even considering it.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 06/08/2015 21:03

Wouldnt you need to prove to Easyjet that your screen was intact right before it was loaded into the hold and was damaged right after disembarking?

ilovesooty · 06/08/2015 21:04

I didn't mean that. I was referring to the OP 's question about what would happen if you got travel insurance by email and died abroad - ie who would know you had It? I meant that if you'd bought travel insurance you'd surely take a copy of it with you.

tobysmum77 · 06/08/2015 21:14

happilymarriedexpat sums it up nicely I think....

BertieBotts · 06/08/2015 21:16

I suppose. I've never bought travel insurance so I suppose I've never thought about it but you're right, it would be a bit silly to buy it and then not actually take proof with you!

BadLad · 07/08/2015 10:51

had have, would have, should have

I hope that correcting the OP didn't make you feel too smug, Kimcat, given that "had have" is also wrong.

hejhej · 08/08/2015 07:50

I doubt travel insurance would cover it or if it would be worth it with excess.

Underwriters do all they can to not pay up.

clam · 08/08/2015 18:58

Just to say, I travelled back from Italy today with easyjet. At the bag-drop counter, the lady asked us if we'd like to check in any hand luggage for free as the flight was full and only the first 50 people to board could guarantee room for their bags in the lockers. Mindful of this thread, I asked if that included my smaller sized (regulation) wheeled case and she said no. Dd's large handbag would be ok though.
Again mindful of this thread, I had put a lightweight canvas bag at the top of the case for decanting iPads etc. but stupidly put it in the suitcase, not the hand luggage, and that had been whisked off on the conveyor belt.
Once more mindful of this thread, I took out all electronics from my wheeled bag in order to check it in. As I watched it trundle away on the conveyor belt I suddenly remembered I'd left my wallet tucked away at the bottom of it!! Blush
(Good news is that it all arrived intact at gatwick)
And when we got on board, half the overhead bins were empty!! Grr.

BertieBotts · 08/08/2015 19:10

BadLad I can't see anybody saying "had have" in this thread except you.

hejhej · 09/08/2015 09:06

Oh dear clam! Just goes to show even when your aware of these things being in an airport situation its very easy to make mistakes.

Lots of people are being very high and mighty in judging from a distance.
