easy jet won't replace my ipad that they broke on the hold

I had a short flight with easy jet. However I was told as boarding the plane my hand luggage would have to go on the hold. I said I couldn't do this as was carrying delicate and fragile items (musical equipment). They told me I had no choice.

So I took on board what I could hold in my hands and the rest had to go on the hold. Every thing was fine apart from my iPad. Cracked screen so unusable.

I've been chasing them for 4 months and still they count it as resolved and won't replace it for me. Aibu to think that they should.

i hate how people are allowed to take cases on the plane ,it holds everything up getting on and off .you should be allowed a handbag or small back pack /baby changing bag .the rest go in the hold .it took us nearly 30 minutes to get off a plane recently as everyone had to get done there cases .there was probably only us folk with kids with cases in the hold .probably about 5 familys the rest had there bloody cases on board .

SlightlyJadedJack · 05/08/2015 16:26

Jeez, will people read the thread before repeatedly asking was the bag too big. Its only one page long ffs!

clam · 05/08/2015 16:26

I can't believe anyone travels outside the UK without insurance.

Littlecaf · 05/08/2015 16:26

Sorry just seen you had insurance for musical equipment. I'd still by travel insurance for something as expensive as an iPad etc.

The only reason I was forced to put them on the hold as there was too much hand luggage on the flight. I was totally within the rules.

But Easyjet guarantees that if your bag is a certain size, they will find space for it in the cabin. Your bag must have been larger than the guaranteed cabin size.

My musucial equipment has insurance hence no need for travel insurance. As other posters have already pointed out, when travelling in the EU you do need travel insurance for the medical things that are not covered by the EHIC as well as for situations such as this one, although possibly you can claim for the iPad damage on your home insurance.

JohnCusacksWife · 05/08/2015 16:28

Travelling anywhere outwith the UK without travel insurance is insane. Lesson learned the hard way.

No, it would have been , that it what it s for! The airline would be liable had the bag itself been damaged and you reported it at the time in the baggage hall. You are evidently a risk taker if you don't bother to insure your household contents. However you can't then expect others to cover your losses by default.

EmpressofBlandings · 05/08/2015 16:30

Have you considered getting in touch with one of the newspaper consumer rights champions and asking them to intervene on your behalf? That can sometimes get results where one individual can't.

Agree aprilanne but you can see why people take cabin bags when airlines have started charging quite considerable sums to check in hold baggage.

Personally, my main issue is that the airlines/airports can be SO slow to deliver the bags from the hold to the carousel. I want to just get off the plane and leave the airport straightaway so it´s usually much, much quicker to take only a cabin bag. (Also we don´t have to check-in physically so can arrive at the airport later).

BertieBotts · 05/08/2015 16:30

The cost of a screen replacement is about £200. Cheaper than a new one and about the same as the excess on home insurance anyway.

I think this is annoying but would put it down to experience. Another time you should put the ipad in a protective case or tuck it in between soft clothing etc. Of course that's hard to plan if you were expecting to be able to take the bag on the plane. However it does usually say in the small print that there's a chance you might have to put the bag in the hold.

I did recently read that the EHIC doesn't do what most people think it does - I thought it gave you emergency healthcare, but nothing which could wait. Does it not? I haven't actually found anything which tells you what it DOES cover. It just says "The equivalent to what locals would get" - what, insured locals, uninsured locals? All other EU countries have health insurance programs!

Fairylea · 05/08/2015 16:30

Sorry about your ipad op but think of it as a lesson learnt... never ever travel outside the UK without travel insurance. Disaster waiting to happen!

Where is this easy jet guarentee? They forced me to.

I can't believe I'm the only one without travel insurance (for a weekend in Paris). In all my years of traveling I've once needed Medicare in Spain and they were excellent , far better than my experience with the NHS. I don't think on the streets in London or Paris I'm at any more risk so don't insure electronics. If I had of always taken out insurance I could of bought several iPads with it.

OP sorry to be morbid but have you any idea how much it costs to repatriate a body? People have lost their homes paying for relatives to be brought home who didn't have insurance.

I can't believe people travel abroad without insurance. Crazy.

bloodyteenagers · 05/08/2015 16:32

Why does it have to be replaced. You do realize you can get the screen replaced?

carmellas3 · 05/08/2015 16:33

If I die on holiday I have plenty of assets, that's not a concern.

UrethraFranklin1 · 05/08/2015 16:35

Its very common to have hand luggage put in the hold if you're at the back of the boarding queue. I don't know why people are arguing there must be more to it, it happens on all the airlines.

HelsBels3000 · 05/08/2015 16:35

Annual travel insurance - IRO 40 pounds.
Replacement ipad - IRO 200 pounds
wrong choice OP.

WoonerismSpit · 05/08/2015 16:36

happy if they do guarantee that, they are liars.

On a flight back from Amsterdam, as we went through to board, they told me that I had to place my (regulation sized) hand luggage in the hold. I was 5 months pregnant and cried at the thought of my straighteners being broken

JohnCusacksWife · 05/08/2015 16:36

carmella3, how do you think you'd get home in the event of a bad accident (or how would your body be flown home)? Who'd pay for that? The answer is your friends and relatives would be left scraping around or trying to raise funds at one of the most stressful and upsetting times of their lives.

Cover for a weekend trip to paris costs buttons for a healthy person. If you can afford the holiday you can afford the insurance. Not to have it is irresponsible in the extreme.
