easy jet won't replace my ipad that they broke on the hold

I had a short flight with easy jet. However I was told as boarding the plane my hand luggage would have to go on the hold. I said I couldn't do this as was carrying delicate and fragile items (musical equipment). They told me I had no choice.

So I took on board what I could hold in my hands and the rest had to go on the hold. Every thing was fine apart from my iPad. Cracked screen so unusable.

I've been chasing them for 4 months and still they count it as resolved and won't replace it for me. Aibu to think that they should.

Saying OP should have had travel insurance is "victim blaming"?

Haha, I've heard it all now

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 05/08/2015 16:47

Of course it's not victim blaming Fan it's just common sense.

specialsubject · 05/08/2015 16:48

for anyone else as confused as the OP - you must not leave your home country without travel insurance.

Why, when your EHIC gives you the same medical cover as the locals? Because that medical cover varies and NEVER includes repatriation. So if you need air ambulance home (or worst case, your corpse needs to be brought back) there's no cover and your family either bankrupt themselves or leave you to rot.

insurance can also cover possessions, but no-one was ever bankrupted by a broken ipad.

it is obviously even stupider to leave the EU without travel insurance, but it is risky even on a day trip to France.

We're "banging on" about insurance because the OP said she couldn't claim on her own insurance (which might well have covered it) because she didn't take it out as she was "only" going to Europe and had an EHIC, therefore didn't need any.

TwinTum · 05/08/2015 16:51

I think Easyjet has a new policy (possibly more recent than 3 months) that bags under a certain size are guaranteed. Bags between that size and the max hand luggage size can be made to go into the hold if there is not enough room. I think the smaller size fits under the seats if necessary, so there would always be enough space. or maybe they have calculated that if every passenger had a bag no bigger than the smaller size, the lockers would have enough room for 1 per passenger.

My dad went out and bought a new case within the smaller dimensions for this reason.

LIZS · 05/08/2015 16:52

And note even if op had broken it by accident in her own home she doesn't have any insurance to cover it. Nor if it had been lost or stolen. Only a victim of her own naivety.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 05/08/2015 16:54

Only a victim of her own naivety, that just about sums it up. Good phrase LIZS

achieve6 · 05/08/2015 16:54

I don't think easyjet have to cover this

I think there are blanket rules that in certain circumstances, stuff has to go in the hold even if you hadn't planned that, so has to be packed accordingly.

Another vote for travel insurance. If you die abroad, your nearest and dearest will be hassled for repatriation costs. If they can pay them easily, that's one thing I suppose, but why put them through the hassle?

Also, many smaller reasons for travel insurance, but if you can't be doing with it even with musical instruments in tow...

Metacentric · 05/08/2015 16:55

No travel insurance, was within the eu so no need for medial insurance.

So if you broke your leg, how would you plan to get home?

ReadtheSmallPrint · 05/08/2015 16:55

So, as well as taking out no travel insurance the OP has no household contents insurance.

The word 'bonkers' doesn't even come close.

KittensOnAPlane · 05/08/2015 16:55

I'm staggered that people in this day and age still dont have travel insurance.

If you're injured while you are away, it would cost a fortune to get you home, it doesnt cost much to get it.

I broke 2 phones and an ereader on my last trip, and my travel insurance paid to replace them all. (£50 excess i think) so i got over £300...

All items in the hold should be packaged to put up with the throwing around that the baggage handler do - for what it worth i have brought back bottles of booze in hold luggage, and they have never broken

PastaLaFeasta · 05/08/2015 16:56

I didn't have insurance on a quick trip to Paris and lost my passport, never again as it cost a lot more than the policy. I wouldn't be without contents either, had my phone stolen in the UK and was thankfully covered. Even UK holidays should be booked with insurance incase of cancellation due to illness etc. and losses like this.

You may be able to change the screen yourself with a kit off eBay. We did this with an iPhone once.

Although I'd be pretty pissed off too. Did you have a good cover on the iPad? Another lesson I have learnt from my cracked iPhone.

RandomFriend · 05/08/2015 16:57

The information on allowed and "guaranteed" cabin baggage is here:

www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travelaccessories/11400230/easyJet-hand-luggage-restrictions.html

I recall reading it on flights that I booked earlier this year. However, I can no longer find it on the Easyjet website.

Metacentric · 05/08/2015 16:58

Everyone gets insurance every time they pop over to Paris or Brussels for the day? Seriously?

Yes. I have a worldwide annual travel insurance policy as part of my bank account, but buying it independently costs buttons. I've just bought European annual cover for my teenage children and I think I paid about thirty five quid a year, slightly more for the younger as the market for "can travel alone aged under 18" is slightly more limited.

PastaLaFeasta · 05/08/2015 16:59

Plus medical costs can be into the millions, perhaps OP has this sort of money and doesn't need to worry.

PrimalLass · 05/08/2015 17:01

I paid £40 to get a broken iPad screen fixed - a company I found on eBay.

Bubblesinthesummer · 05/08/2015 17:01

If I die on holiday I have plenty of assets, that's not a concern

Well use those assets to replace the screen and towards travel insurance Wink

KinkyAfro · 05/08/2015 17:03

I don't think any airline can guarantee cabin baggage as they don't know how many, what size etc. bags are. I've just come back from Prague and the overhead lockers were stuffed with half of the flight yet to board, we were sat at the front so heard the cabin crew explaining this to the passengers boarding after us. They were not happy.

The only thing you can do is be prepared that you won't have your bag with you in the cabin and take out insurance for anything valuable if it's going in the hold.

This was with Jet 2.

Roussette · 05/08/2015 17:05

Carmella, you are not guaranteed cabin space. If the flight is busy and you are one of the last in the queue you will be asked to put it in the hold.

They tell you at the gate to take out all your valuables and take them on the plane. This has happened to me more than once. I take out my mobile, my Ereader, my tablet. That is what you should have done. They stress it to everyone so you have no case whatsoever. Just give up.

Also, you are completely bonkers not to have travel insurance. Please don't tell me you'd be the sort of person knocking at the Consulate's door for help.

BertieBotts · 05/08/2015 17:06

Great links, It'sAll, thank you :) I had always assumed that "the same as locals" meant something equivalent to NHS care but didn't cover specifically travelling in order to get healthcare.

The NHS choices page is v. useful. I will bookmark it. (Though it's pointless for me as I live in Germany anyway! Must look up what my German EHIC covers in the UK...)

Sirzy · 05/08/2015 17:06

I have little sympathy for anyone who decides to travel without insurance.

PrimalLass · 05/08/2015 17:09

Techmend Cambridge is the company I used. Look them up and save yourself any more angst.

BertieBotts · 05/08/2015 17:09

I don't think it's crazy to not have travel insurance. Having looked that up it seems you only pay a small amount at least in the countries I've seen. I suppose repatriation might be a pain but what are the chances?

However I didn't know it was as cheap as £15. So would probably recommend to friends/family to get it in future.

VivaLeBeaver · 05/08/2015 17:10

I think the lack of insurance is irrelevant.

Ive had to claim on travel insurance, excess was £250. My home insurance would cover this but the excess is £200.

Why should someone be out of pocket by such an amount?

If the OP had put an ipad in hold luggage out of choice Id say her fault for being so daft. But this is EasyJets fault. Can you contact the help person in the travel section in the Saturday Times? He's always sorting stuff like this out for people.
