It's my brother's 30th soon, and I've got him a candle for present. It's a nice, biiig candle from M&S, cost £12 and looks quite cool :) I am not great with presents however, and worry it might seem a bit random / not quite enough to form an actual gift. Should I add more, or would this be suitable for someone's 30th?

OP posts:

Just asked DH.

He looked at me like Hmm

Crap present!

Theycallmemellowjello · 05/08/2015 13:56

My DH actually requested a giant candle for Christmas! But I wouldn't be particularly delighted to receive one - doubt I'd use it. As everyone says - depends on the receiver's tastes. Hard to guess if a random person likes candles!

MokunMokun · 05/08/2015 13:59

This is where the OP drip feeds that her brother is a holistic healer and loves candles. Grin

I don't like candles though. Too dangerous with the kids and cats plus I'm sensitive to strong smells.

My brother would rather a 6 pack of cider.

Viviennemary · 05/08/2015 14:02

I don't like candles. But plent of people do. So if he likes them then I suppose it's an OK present. But maybe it's one of these items that people would rather choose themselves. Ican't think many 30 year old men would appreciate a candle as a present even if they are into house decor and so on.

Sazzle41 · 05/08/2015 14:06

Thats kind of what you give someone you dont know well as a small token. Or a thank you gift. But I know families have very different perspectives on budgets and presents. What are his interests there is blokey stuff you can get personalised on notonthehighstreet.com at really reasonable prices - I appreciate some men are difficult to buy for!

alltouchedout · 05/08/2015 14:06

I wouldn't be. But I'm not him. What does he like?

Gruach · 05/08/2015 14:07

Reverse?

ghostyslovesheep · 05/08/2015 14:10

why has the OP disappeared Hmm so frustrating

I am guessing her brother hacked her account to make a point Grin

LittleLionMansMummy · 05/08/2015 14:10

I don't think we'll ever know whether op's brother does actually like candles or not!

Dh loves candles and I've bought him Yankee candles before. I've also bought him roses on valentine's day although he was a bit Hmm at that Dh is a bit camp though. Either way, probably not the best present for the 30th birthday of a close family member. Assuming you are close of course.

VirginiaTonic · 05/08/2015 14:14

It all depends if he is into candles, and whether or not you can afford to buy him more. If you are skint, then he will appreciate that you couldn't afford any more. If however you are well off then a candle is a shit birthday present for your close family.

Personally, candles are something I buy for teachers, girlfriends, and housewarming gifts.

For a 30th for my brother I would either have given him something expensive looking which he will keep like a leather bound journal, a pewter tankard, set of crystal whiskey glasses, a painting or framed print, etc.

penguinsaresmall · 05/08/2015 14:16

I wouldn't mind a candle but it would have to be Jo Malone

But I can't think of a single man I know who would be interested in candles in any shape or form...

PuppyMonkey · 05/08/2015 14:17

I'm going to stick my neck out and say of course the op's brother isn't into candles, no sane person can really be "into" candles it's just not possible. Grin

WoonerismSpit · 05/08/2015 14:17

That gift would be perfect for my DB squoosh. Where is it from, if you don't mind me asking?

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 05/08/2015 14:18

I like candles. I wouldn't expect a candle as a 30th birthday gift from a sibling. A middling level friend, my boss, a sibling's relatively new partner, yes. My brother? I'd be hugely disappointed.

achieve6 · 05/08/2015 14:18

OP - If you know for sure your brother likes candles, then I suppose it's fine.

(If not, then it's a bizarre choice).

That said, i think a 30th is a birthday that warrants a bit of thought but unlike some posters, I'm big on birthdays for adults generally - I'm mystified by the attitude that only children need nice presents.

It depends entirely on your brother though. What have you bought for other birthdays? Sometimes even wine or chocs are a better gift if you know the person will like them more, but I can't imagine you've bought a candle with no knowledge of whether or not he would like it? Confused

FluffyPingPong · 05/08/2015 14:19

Haha this has got to be a joke? Surely? A candle Grin

BikeRunSki · 05/08/2015 14:20

I am always gutted when I get given candles (especially when they look like they cost a bit). I don't really "get" candles unless they are on top of a cake. So. Does your brother like/use candles?

ShaynePunim · 05/08/2015 14:21

In my experience candles are the #1 present that people moan about!

I think it would be an ok gift for someone you barely know, or for a colleague who is leaving, but for your BROTHER's big birthday it seems a bit impersonal and like you didn't put much thought in it.

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 05/08/2015 14:24

squoosh I love your brother's gift! Please come back and tell us where you got it?

As for getting your brother a candle for his 30th - no.

SilverNightFairy · 05/08/2015 14:25

I would love to be 30 again

hellsbellsmelons · 05/08/2015 14:26

I wouldn't want a candle and not sure a 30 YO bloke would want one.

THIS SITE has some great ideas.
Memorable stuff as well.

SilverNightFairy · 05/08/2015 14:29

And as for the candle, well, perhaps if he lives off the grid and lights his hand hewn cabin via candles made from the wax of fairy milked honey bees..well then yes AWESOME GIFT ( two thumbs up)

squoosh · 05/08/2015 14:29

Goodbye and Woonerism the image I linked to is from a website called Ideal Bookshelf which seems to do set prints for different genres.

The print I got my brother looked very similar except I chose the book titles. It was 3 or 4 years ago now though and I can't remember exactly where I got it. Maybe Etsy? I'll see if I can find it.

MmeGuillotine · 05/08/2015 14:30

squoosh I love that print! What an excellent idea! Where was it from? Grin

MmeGuillotine · 05/08/2015 14:30

Ah, cross post! Thanks!
