It's my brother's 30th soon, and I've got him a candle for present. It's a nice, biiig candle from M&S, cost £12 and looks quite cool :) I am not great with presents however, and worry it might seem a bit random / not quite enough to form an actual gift. Should I add more, or would this be suitable for someone's 30th?

I think the champagne cork's quite sweet, but probably would have given it in addition to a toy or book!

cashewnutty · 05/08/2015 13:15

I think it is an odd choice of gift for a 30 year old male. I like candles as a gift but my DH would think it weird if he was given one as a gift.

RunningJumpingClimbingTrees · 05/08/2015 13:21

I did buy my husband a candle once for our anniversary as I was stuck in the middle of no where with one shop and it was cotton smelling so fit he criteria otherwise my husband wouldn't really appreciate a candle

OTheHugeManatee · 05/08/2015 13:25

Anyone else looking at that owl candle and thinking of Phoneshop:

AuntyMag10 · 05/08/2015 13:29

It's a really crap present. Champagne, a jacket, ticket for a show/concert, voucher for a big store, the list is endless. Anything but a silly candle.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 05/08/2015 13:31

Yes I would be, to be honest, but I'd never say I was disappointed.
However I don't like candles. If your brother does that is fine
So it's hard to generalise disappointment.
If you liked red wine and someone got you white which you couldn't stand then yes you would be disappointed.

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 05/08/2015 13:31

My SIL bought me a candle for my 21st birthday. I still think she is a huge twat. Although now she cannot even be arsed to send me a card so she probably thought the candle was hugely generous back then

OTheHugeManatee · 05/08/2015 13:32

Or these incredibly bored looking penguins.

fastdaytears · 05/08/2015 13:32

Beyond wtaf? Where is the candle? I sort of want it though...

rookiemere · 05/08/2015 13:32

No sexism here. I'm female and think that a candle as a 30th birthday present for either male or female is not great.
If you're stuck get a voucher.

derxa · 05/08/2015 13:33

A candle?!! ( a la Lady Bracknell)

ExitStageLeft · 05/08/2015 13:34

Where's the OP? WE JUST WANT TO KNOW IF THE BROTHER LIKES CANDLES!!!!

Lovewearingjeans · 05/08/2015 13:38

I go to Firebox or Not On The High Street for the men in my life. Really good selections for men at all budgets.

Lovewearingjeans · 05/08/2015 13:39

Every male in my life only see candles being good for being on the tops of cakes Grin

CinnabarRed · 05/08/2015 13:39

I'd want to give him something more lasting, TBH.

Place marking out of nothing but sheer curiosity

Floggingmolly · 05/08/2015 13:44

Love the pissed off penguins Grin

moderatemum · 05/08/2015 13:44

If you're crap with presents wishwant.co.uk is good. It's basically a voucher but for a small selection of personally chosen gifts. They've got quirky cool stuff that make unique gifts cough not candles cough Kidding. He's lucky you care so much and I'm sure he'll really appreciate it.

squoosh · 05/08/2015 13:44

It's a pretty rubbish gift. Most men I know would be totally bemused at receiving a candle for their birthday. Or for any other occasion.

What about a basket filled with some trendy craft beers?

BitchBags · 05/08/2015 13:46

I would be a bit disappointed with that tbh. As a 30th from a sibling it doesn't sound very exciting, unless he has a thing for m&s candles

Cabrinha · 05/08/2015 13:48

A candle? Hmm

PuppyMonkey · 05/08/2015 13:51

It's a no from me and YANBU - you really ARE not great with presents Grin

Hope op is off exchanging the candle for, I dunno, a framed pic of him and the family or something a bit more personal...

squoosh · 05/08/2015 13:52

I bought my book obsessed brother a personalised print like this, a bookshelf featuring some of his favourite books. He did tell me I got one wrong though! Grin

Think of something your brother loves and go from there.
