About Angel perfume?

Surely there are others who agree this is what hell will smell like.

I am a perfume-lover and can usually tolerate all the strong ones - Guerlain, Calvin Klein etc. but there is something about this perfume that makes me feel ill. I can smell it a mile-off.

A woman in my office wears it. She is lovely, but I can't stand to be near her, or be in a room she has been in.
I know I am being unreasonable really, but do people really think this smells nice?

Blimey! Such vitriol! I wear angel occasionally. I can't smell it on me, but I can wear v few perfumes without being horribly conscious of them (most smell hideous on me, and this is agreed by friends, not my imagination). One I still hate is l'eau d'issey which (thankfully) seems rarer and rarer. To me, it's vile, and I swear I could smell someone wearing it on the opposite hard shoulder of the m25 at rush hour I'm that sensitive to it! I guess it's horses for courses, like some smokers really seem to 'hold' the smell of smoke and others not, some people will be more or less sensitive to certain perfumes or have certain perfumes stand out more on them.

squoosh · 02/08/2015 16:29

I love l'eau d'issey! We are perfume foes Grin

bottleofbeer · 02/08/2015 16:31

Oh god, l'eau d'issy. It's another bleurgh from me. Add Kenzo Flowers to that list too.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 02/08/2015 16:31

I can't stand it - it's like the wearer has rubbed a bar of cheap chocolate all over themselves to try and hide the smell of BO.

Revolting.

crustsaway · 02/08/2015 16:37

Im another one that can't stand it, it's sickly. Im more of a CK1 or Eternity wearer but in small doses.

In saying that, A liberal spray of anything gives me a headache and I can taste the stuff for ages.

I have to move away from people that gush a perfume over themselves.

squoosh · 02/08/2015 16:41

CK One reminds me of being on a drunken holiday in Spain when I was 18. I couldn't wear it now.

crustsaway · 02/08/2015 16:48

Just goes to show how "personal" smells are then squoosh.

You are trying to tell me that my choice is shit arent you?

I think anyone can wear what they like but to spray it so liberally over yourself so others have to practically "eat" it is not the way to go.

Sallystyle · 02/08/2015 16:54

I wish everyone smelled like me.. of Hypnotic Poison.

squoosh · 02/08/2015 16:55

No I'm not telling you your choice is shit I'm telling you when I get even the slightest sniff of CK One I'm whooshed back in time to being drunk as a skunk on peach schnapps and snogging the dodgiest of boys!

crustsaway · 02/08/2015 16:59

Grin glad that was cleared up.

Rainbunny · 02/08/2015 17:00

I loved it when I was 18, I sort of feel that it's a juvenile kind of scent though, wouldn't wear it now. In fact I feel in general that perfume wearing is a dying trend, I loved perfumes in my twenties but I hardly ever wear it now and I can't remember the last time I smelled perfume on another person. On the other hand perhaps I've just lost my sense of smell with my ever worsening allergies.

crustsaway · 02/08/2015 17:02

I tend to like something and stick to it.

Dumdedumdedum · 02/08/2015 17:08

I was given Angel as a present too and never wore it, the whiff I got when I opened the bottle gave me an instant migraine. I like light, flowery scents - used to wear L'Air du Temps and Ma Griffe when I were a lass, but grew out of them and now my everyday one is Eau d'Orange Verte by Hermes, and I love Acqua di Parma cologne (both quite citrusy and unisex) for special occasions. I used to wear Paco Rabanne pour Homme (also unisex, I thought) and really liked it, but it reminded me of one my exes after he dumped me, so it became too painful to wear. Aramis is something when I get a whiff of it takes me happily back to a certain gorgeous ex boyfriend!
I love Shalimar on other people, but I tried it once and it didn't smell right on me and gave me a headache - as do Poison, Obsession and other similar ones. I don't know what people think is wrong with Rive Gauche, my mil used to wear it, I rather liked it on her!

DurhamDurham · 02/08/2015 17:48

I've just put some Angel on as off out for a curry and to the comedy store.....half expecting to see women fainting or being sick at my feet.

I will report back later Grin

God I really hate how calling something "old lady" is shorthand for unattractive and disgusting. Being a lady, fine, but the minute you are old you might as well curl up and die, and God forbid you offend anyone's delicate nostrils with a bold scent. Yeeeeuuugghccch. Hmm
Anyhoo. I hate Angel too, and love the formaldehyde description, but I do like a bold scent. I even quite like Chloe narcisse (similar vintage) with the disclaimer that it has to be used very sparingly, and only smells good after 3 hours!

teddygirlonce · 02/08/2015 17:51

I used to wear it when it first came out (and I've also worn Shalimar in my time too!) and loved it. But it always reminds me of the ex-BF who bought me my first bottle of this 'heady' perfume. It suited me then (I was a full-on sexy, seductive siren at the time!) but when I smell it on other women now it seems overbearing and very sickly. It's now over-popular and a 'has-been' fragrance IMHO. Wouldn't ever want to wear it again!

MamaLazarou · 02/08/2015 17:58

I adore Poison. My favourite perfume on someone else.

BlisterFace · 02/08/2015 18:02

Anyone remember Aromatics Elixir by Clinique? My former secretary used to wear it and it made me want to set fire to the inside of my nose.

I quite like Angel though in a "reminisce about the late 90's now I'm an old giffer" way Grin

OttiliaVonBCup · 02/08/2015 18:17

And this is why I would never ever give perfume as a present.
Ever.

DaddyPigIsMyParentingGuru · 02/08/2015 18:30

I like Angel.
And L'Eau De Issey.
And Dolce Vita.
Blush

Happy36 · 02/08/2015 18:43

Does this thread make everyone else want to go perfume shopping?

Behooven · 02/08/2015 19:37

Really? They aren't adult women then...?

No, as I took care to explain, they are girls. I work with young people age 15/16 who are leaving school with no qualifications. Hope that clarifies for you.

bottleofbeer · 02/08/2015 19:40

Jimmy Choo, the original one. That's bloody horrible too. I realise I really don't like sweet perfumes. Probably a throwback to body shop vanilla and a girl at school who must've bathed in it. Couldn't go near her and I get a whiff of her when I see her on Facebook Grin

OttiliaVonBCup · 02/08/2015 19:50

Does this thread make everyone else want to go perfume shopping?

Not for Angel.
Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 02/08/2015 20:36

Perfume shopping? No, in fact it's put me right off, making me think of all the ones that induce headaches and those times I've been stuck next to overpowering perfume in restaurants or at the cinema.
