most people that claim to be animal lovers are hugely hypocritical

My sm is awash with people declaring themselves animal lovers and outraged by that lion. However I know that many of them eat regularly cheap meat and don't give a fuck about where it comes from.

Yes the lion thing is sad,but knowing what goes on every single day to provide people with vast amount s of cheap meat is millions of times worse. Maybe its just the UK where people are that hypocritical and everyone claims to be an animal lover. But actually they only care about a few cute animals that you would see in a zoo and happily stock up on bargain meat without a second thought.

The ones that get me are the ones who claim to love animals and want to protect endangered species but flag up the number of reptiles, amphibians, insects and arachnids that are endangered to them and they say 'good'. Or they happily squash bees 'because they sting'

And what did they say when you told them all this?

I like animals. I also like corned beef. I am a hypocrite.

I can remember a few years ago being berated for eating (rose) veal, as it was a cute little animal and 'cruel'. I did point out the fact they were milk and dairy eaters but it just didnt sink in

Anyone that kills bees is a wrong un. One of my mums friends was outraged she couldn't find a pest control person that would kill all the bees that had nested in her outbuilding.

And the people who are against fur but don't realise most of it is now farmed and by releasing mink into the wild it's killing off water voles.

I think a big part of why everyone is so upset about the lion is the pointlessness of it, killing animals to eat is one thing, killing them to put their head on the wall and feel like a big man is quite another.

Well seeing as 1/3 of all food bought is supermarkets ends up in the bin in the UK lots of the deaths (and miserable life's) of intensively farmed animals is pointless.

Surely there is a distinction between killing animals for food, though factory farming is another subject and killing an unedible animal merely for sport?

As for veal, in my young day there a lot of particular cruelty in producing veal, like keeping calves in crates because the development of muscles ruins the taste. I haven't investigated in manys the long year whether this is still the practice but I wouldn't be surprised.

And, again keeping animals in cages for their entire lifetime to provide fur for your coat?

Not the UK. Leaving aside the RSPCA, which organisation wants animals to suffer so they collect more money, the UK is one of the best countries on animal welfare in my opinion.

Just look at what you can eat, and how it is brought to the table in other countries.

But I agree we have to eat less meat if we want rainforests. Chop a rainforest down and within 5 years the soil is so leached of nutrients it becomes desert. A tree cannot grow in desert. The rainforest is lost. So is the Atlantic robbed of detritus and nutrients. We are going to have to get used to eating less and less biodiversity.

Or just live for now.

Yup, I eat cheap meat. I'm skint. If I could afford it, I'd only eat animals raised on a farm, allowed to graze all day in the sunshine.

sleepsoftly I think its the UK where people are more hypocritical, other countries people don't pretend to be animal lovers. My friend from eastern Europe moved to the UK as working as a vet in his own country people didn't care so much about their pets so just put them down if they needed anything expensive.

Your totally right about the rainforest, however man only looks at the short term. Short termism will be the end of the human race!

Yes I am an animal lover, but I eat meat. The world us full of contradictions.

eating meat is one of things we evolved to do, although many of us now live with the luxury of choice.

wasting food and killing things we don't eat is not what we evolved to do.

Aeroflotgirl - your only hypocritical if you only care about the welfare of cute animals and not what you eat. That the very simple fact that is going over many peoples heads here.
