people that bump park should have their licence taken away

Surely no one thinks bump parking is acceptable? Especially now parking is easy as new cars all have rear parking cameras with guides.

I see it all the time in London and I've never witnessed it happening to my high end car, but I'm sure the small bumps are caused by it.

Welcome to MN OP.

I'm in Crouch End
Well there is your problem OP, your car might be "high end" but you're clearly unable to afford to live somewhere "high end". Maybe consider moving?

RufusTheReindeer · 26/07/2015 18:05

Never seen anyone bump park (except on comedy shows), didn't know it was a 'thing' til today

None of our cars have fancy parking stuff

I think OP that the vast majority of drivers drive older cars...or for example have one new car and one slightly older one as a run around

If I accidentally bumped someone's car I certainly wouldn't be basing my bumping on the value of the other vehicle

And I think mines has a very good point there

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 26/07/2015 18:05

Sorry op he said something unintelligible in Spanish before going back to buffing the Rolls.

ShatnersBassoon · 26/07/2015 18:05

The height of the end of your car (Confused) is relevant because I like to damage expensive cars more than regular family cars. Doesn't everyone?

avocadotoast · 26/07/2015 18:05

Maybe, like, don't have such a fancy car if you're going to grumble about the cost of minor repairs to it? Surely minor repairs are par for the course with any vehicle? You either sort them or leave them. I leave them, I'm not overly proud...

I dunno, I'm shit at parking. I just park miles away from where I need to be rather than try and squeeze into a little space and get stuck Grin

JassyRadlett · 26/07/2015 18:06

High end is just relivant as it causes more damage in £ that's all, thought I was being gracious by not mentioning the name!

But not necessarily as a % of the purchase price - which is just as relevant when it comes to affordability of repair to the owner.

Being in a position to be able to 'value' having a 'nice car' is a sign of being well off. Not everyone has that luxury. I do, and I'm grateful for it!

limitedperiodonly · 26/07/2015 18:06

No, it isn't what bumpers are for.

Yes it is soupdragon, or do you think they're just for show?

I'm very good at parallel parking but sometimes spaces can be tight and I will squeeze into a spot and nudge cars gently with my bumpers because that is what they're for.

Bumpers are very robust at infinitesimal speeds. That is what they're there for, apart from other more high speed collisions.

I drive very nice cars but that's not the point. If I was worried about them getting damaged, I wouldn't take them out; I'd just look at them in my hermetically-sealed underground garage. If I drove something with self coloured bumpers or a vintage one with shiny chrome ones I'd have to put up with the inevitable damage.

I leave my car in its space and hope to come back to find it undamaged. If it's damaged then I'd swear but that is what insurance is for.

I fully expect people to bump the front or back of my car gently without causing damage. Believe me, it can be done though I would cringe if I saw them doing it.

I'd rather not park close to someone with a tow-bar but I can't stop them parking next to me when I've gone.

If they want to rely on parking sensors that's great too but I wonder about people who routinely rely on sensors or sat nav rather than eye and judgement.

Parking alongside people in a car park is different. Of course you don't crash your doors into their car as you're getting out. Though lots of cars have protective bumpers running along the sides. That's a good idea and I imagine that's what they're there for rather than just being for show.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 26/07/2015 18:06

By high end do you mean to say you drive a monster truck?

ADishBestEatenCold · 26/07/2015 18:07

"bumps on a high end car devalue a car a lot more than an old run around near the end of its life"

Could you not have an old run around for taking up to town, or anywhere you might be on-street parking?

None of it would bother me too much (in fact, I don't think I've ever encountered it), but I do know it would bother my sister ... a lot. She has a very "high-end" car and a few pine needles or a branch from a hedge near it, are enough to send her into near hysteria! Grin

Having said that, she wouldn't dream of taking it up to town, or on-street parking it, she has a run-around for that.

RufusTheReindeer · 26/07/2015 18:07

"high end car" bet you say that all the time Grin

I would say "I'm just getting the bag out of the boot"

And you would say "I'm just getting the bag out of my high end cars boot"

I had a friend who couldn't just say "my brother" she had to say "my old Etonian brother"

sanfairyanne · 26/07/2015 18:07

its not acceptable as a parking technique and i'd be mortified if i was that shit at parking. paying for repairs to scratches should be enough of a punishment though

i always wondered why my bumpers were so knackered looking but i see some people excuse their lack of spacial awareness by claiming it is acceptable practice Confused Hmm Confused if i had a new car i would be pissed off

Lweji · 26/07/2015 18:07

I have to admit I once reverse bump parked the idiot in the muscle car who parked so close to my car that I could hardly get out of the parking space I was in. I just actually touched it plate to plate, so no damage.
I pretended it was by accident and apologised, after pointing out it was hard to get out without bumping as he was so close. while laughing inside

Blush

Could it be OP, that your high end car is a bit on the long side and that if you had a smaller car in London you (and the other people) could park more easily?

Also:
I'm in London, maybe it is a European thing and continental people are doing it. I'm in crouch end.
Could you be more obnoxious?

Lweji · 26/07/2015 18:09

I think the OP is just teasing us and Crouch End is the clue, though.

ShatnersBassoon · 26/07/2015 18:11

Of course it's a pisstake. Nobody says they have a 'high end car', unless they're also earning a 'six figure salary'.

NoSOHisadealbreaker · 26/07/2015 18:12

I'm in Crouch End

Well there is your problem OP, your car might be "high end" but you're clearly unable to afford to live somewhere "high end". Maybe consider moving?

Oooh low blow Chipped Grin Grin I DREAM of living in Crouch End, and I'm serious!

ADishBestEatenCold · 26/07/2015 18:12

"I wonder about people who routinely rely on sensors or sat nav rather than eye and judgement"

.... says the woman who admits to routinely bumping into other people's cars, both fore and aft, to enable her to park!

Love that!!! Grin Grin Grin

passmethewineplease · 26/07/2015 18:14

Jesus OP you sound worse each time you post.

My high end car, maybe it's continental people?

If you buy such a high value car then surely you know there is a chance it could get damaged in a collision, be it minor or major.

Sort of part and parcel of driving.

limitedperiodonly · 26/07/2015 18:15

Why not ADish? I live in central London. Often parking is very tight. Often our cars are very nice too.

Lweji · 26/07/2015 18:17

And OP, if you can't afford minor repairs on a high end "performance" car, then you shouldn't buy one. It means you can't afford it.

I'm curious, though, how "performance" is it? Is it a Ferrari/Lamborghini/Lotus, or one of those middle of the range, aspirational, Audi/BMW/Mercedes?

ilovesooty · 26/07/2015 18:17

I'm sure the OP is most gratified by the interest her troubles have elicited.

No I don't call it high end in real life, I cal it by its name. I did call it that hear as I knew that would make people blame me for world poverty.

Crouch end is a niace part of London and has a high French population.

SoupDragon · 26/07/2015 18:19

Don't be stupid.

Bumpers are not so that twats can park by bumping into the car in front or behind.

Lweji · 26/07/2015 18:19

It's naice, not niace.

HTH
