people that bump park should have their licence taken away

Surely no one thinks bump parking is acceptable? Especially now parking is easy as new cars all have rear parking cameras with guides.

I see it all the time in London and I've never witnessed it happening to my high end car, but I'm sure the small bumps are caused by it.

no probs justonemorethread, 'prejudice against furrin lands' is a bit of a grenade to throw then walk away Grin

sanfairyanne · 27/07/2015 12:13

actual genuine q now about italy, having just googled, i read there is a massive black market controlled by the mafia in corrupt officials selling black market licences. true or not?

MagratGarlik · 27/07/2015 12:24

You don't have to change an EU licence for a UK one after 3 years. An EU licence is a valid licence in the UK for as long as the licence is valid. DP has been here for 11 years and never changed his licence for a UK one. The fact his licence is valid has been verified when we double-checked if he was required to change it. (Oh, and a UK licence is also an EU licence - the UK being part of the EU).

woodhill · 27/07/2015 12:29

middle lane driving may annoy people but doesn't damage cars. newer cars have more paintwork to spoil. dm used to drive a volvo in the 70s which had proper bumpers.

if I can't park safely I would park elsewhere.

sanfairyanne · 27/07/2015 12:41

oh is that right about eu driving licence thing? weird, it was someone french who told me that. they were changing their licence at the time. i wonder why?

Sparklingbrook · 27/07/2015 12:58

I now have a parking sensor installation AD popping up on my phone. Grin

MagratGarlik · 27/07/2015 13:11

Middle lane driving is not just annoying, it is also dangerous!

Technically, if you want to get past someone in the middle lane and you are in the left hand lane, you must move over to the middle lane, then over to the right, overtake and back again. This is because the rule about undertaking when traffic in the right hand lane is going slower only applies when there is a queue of traffic, not when there is a single car blocking the middle lane.

MagratGarlik · 27/07/2015 13:13

You can change your licence to a UK one (and some insurance companies do give you a better rate if you do), but you don't have to. DP is German and checked with the DVLA whether he needed to change it, but was told no, provided his licence was in date.

justonemorethread · 27/07/2015 13:46

Sorry op for derailing thread.
sanfairy, I could answer your question, but if I did I would then have to dispose of you in a mafia like fashion, you know us Italians (even if just half), very close.

As forEU Driving Licenses, it's all here:

europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/vehicles/driving/validity/index_en.htm

limitedperiodonly · 27/07/2015 15:12

Dry you eyes love and learn to drive. That's what she said to you? Good for her, she was totally right.

No, I thought it of her, but I guess you knew that Tuskerfull.

She was unable to get out of a tight spot. It was possible but she couldn't manage it and went to pieces. She was one of those people who deliberately park in the middle of a spot that might otherwise take two or three cars because she couldn't manoeuvre or wanted to avoid all damage.

She didn't bargain for someone who could shoehorn her car into the space she'd left in front of her and the car behind moving and someone else parking behind her quite tightly also.

I got out of the spot quite easily, without touching her bumper, as it happens. I think she'd have had a breakdown if that had happened.

Perhaps she has learned to park since then or just always uses car parks with designated bays.

Tuskerfull · 27/07/2015 17:41

Yeah yeah yeah. Please learn to drive and stop "shoehorning" into spaces too small, blocking others in. None of us "bargain" for drivers like you because we expect people with a licence to be able to drive and park reasonably.

Lweji · 27/07/2015 17:50

I think the point was that she didn't shoehorn, nor the other driver was blocked. As tusker demonstrated by taking the girl's car out of the space...

limitedperiodonly · 27/07/2015 18:02

Tuskerfull there was room to get in there and get out, because otherwise I wouldn't have been able to do it, would I?

She didn't feel confident about getting out and got tearful.

That's fine. We've all been there as inexperienced drivers. I dealt with it by telling her to calm down and moving my car.

What's not fine is plonking yourself in the middle of a large space because you can't manoeuvre and/or don't want people parking near your precious car.

That's what she did and that's what lots of people do.

If I see a space that I can get into I take it.

JassyRadlett · 27/07/2015 18:24

Did you get into this much-discussed space without touching any other cars?

If yes, good for you.

If no, there wasn't enough space for you, and you were a bit of a git.

limitedperiodonly · 27/07/2015 18:32

There was a space. I got my car into it. It was a Mini, not a tank where I could have ridden over the people parked front or back. She couldn't get out because she wasn't a very good driver. I could. I didn't note the space behind her. Why should I?

JassyRadlett · 27/07/2015 18:51

D'you fancy answering the question? I know you don't seem to have been too keen on the last one I asked, but this one is dead easy.

Whether or not you acted legally while parking is a tiny bit relevant, you see.

limitedperiodonly · 27/07/2015 19:05

What was the kestion again? Jassy?

I appear to have drifted into the MN

chippednailvarnish · 27/07/2015 19:15

If you need to touch other cars when parking, you shouldn't be driving.

limitedperiodonly · 27/07/2015 19:28

I am driving chipped.

Be afraid. Be very afraid...

JassyRadlett · 27/07/2015 19:56

Sure thing. Happy to oblige.

From this morning:

But that's what bumpers are for at minuscule impact.

You keep saying this, despite numerous people telling you it's untrue. Have you got a source for this? I've trawled the web but all I can find is a story from DirectLine in 2007 where they say it's against the law, and quite a few panicked posts in various forums from people who are being pursued under s172 of the RTA for damage not immediately visible from their abysmal parking.

So can you tell us where we can get confirmation of this idea that it's fine, and what these parts of cars are for?

**
And from this afternoon: in your feat of parking wizardry which obviously impressed you so much, did you manage it without touching any other cars?

Pipbin · 27/07/2015 20:13

It is possible to park in a very small place without touching other cars.
At my last house we had only on street parking. I could park in the tiniest of gaps without touching the other cars or the kerb because I am good at parking. Ten years with no option makes this happen!

JassyRadlett · 27/07/2015 20:41

Pipbin, I know, I'm in a similar situation here!

limitedperiodonly · 27/07/2015 20:54

Why are you trawling the web jassy?

I've said that if I damaged someone's car I'd leave a note. I'd also leave the big clue - which would be my car parked next to theirs.

But scraped bumpers, no.

Lweji · 27/07/2015 20:56

Going back three posts on the thread is hardly "trawling the web". Hmm
